I do think 12 years is excessive for ammo, however, I also believe the penalties for a lot of crimes are excessive in thie country as well. That being said, these people are absolute morons. I search all of my luggage thoroughly before I fly anywhere, even though I know I dont have anything in there I shouldnt. If you bring pepper spray in to Canada you could be faced with jail time and a criminal record. I guess it's on you, the traveler, to know where you're going and what's allowed. But, countries should make it easy to find a list of what is and isn't allowed. Sudafed is a controlled substance in Mexico. Camo is illegal in quite a few Caribbean countries.

It was in checked baggage. You can fly in the US with properly stored ammo in your checked bags. FWIW I don't actually know but none of the cases seem to describe situations where the ammo would have been properly stored for US purposes. Correct. But the point is that it can be in your checked bag in the US. It won't necessarily pique anyone's interest unless it looked like you had a crap ton of it.

It's illegal for us to bring KinderEggs to the U.S. People have been charged for not knowing this.

Why people are carrying bullets onto an airplane escapes me, but it’s a good question to explore. Maybe it’s intentional for some reason. It seems odd to me that there have been so many in the past 3 months. Maybe they have always been happening, but suddenly they are getting more attention? Also, why are they not being picked up by airport security BEFORE people fly? Yes it seems odd to me as well.

Good grief, did they not see the news of this JUST happening to that other guy? This is just stupid now. Well exactly. Which is why it seems like an intentional "mistake." There are so many crackpot conspiracy theorists and liars on the internet, I wouldn't be surprised by anything.

I couldn't believe it when I heard that yet another story had popped up so soon after the last one.
I don't understand so many things about these people, and it annoys me that they keep making the rest of us look worse than we already look to the rest of the world.
But for starters, if you're traveling to another country, why do you not take a few seconds to whip your phone out and see what cannot be taken into said country? Most Americans walk around with a world full of info in their pockets/purse all of the time--it's easier than ever to obtain that kind of information.

I can't begin to imagine why it's difficult to remove your ammo from your bags, not an issue for us - but guess it helps that there's never ammo in our bags. You know, but DH & I were talking about this, and we do carry other crap in our bags, and we empty it all out. We don't come home and toss our bags back into the closet with clothes, sand, receipts, and other bits and bobs left in them. And despite that, when we go to use the bags the next time, we still double check to make sure they are empty & clean before we start packing again. Just in case someone left behind a pack of gum that's now turned to a melty mess, or a dirty sock's been hiding away in a kid's bag for the last 6 months. And it only takes a moment, because gosh knows Americans love to pretend that they don't have even 2 minutes of extra time anywhere in their entire lives that they can use to check a silly bag.

Exactly.. I always empty all pockets of my bag(s) before putting away.. or at least check them.. I usually keep a makeup bag with some items in it for the next trip, but I always go through it again before repacking. Sometimes there is a random sock or undies that gets missed.

Bipartisan Congressional group led by Rep Bob Good(R-VA) has returned from T&C after visiting constituents and government officials about the arrests for having ammo in luggage. One pleaded guilty yesterday, another case will be heard next week.
So far the group did not have satisfactory answers from the government officials on T&C... Although shame on those who failed themselves!

I don't understand Americans and the love of guns. This American doesn't understand it and will never have a gun even though I'm a singleton living by myself. I've never felt the desire to arm myself. Same

Yes!! TSA failures.. Although several were leaving T&C, could they have bought/acquired them there? I agree that it seems like a lot all at once but I think much of it is that Turks and Caicos just enacted their new laws in 2022. I, also, think that with the Pandemic and all of a sudden travel is just exploding again so we are hearing more stories. I also think that they should have been picked up by TSA but nothing is 100% (or very few things 😄) and just a very small % of missed “things” during security screenings are enough to allow people to get through with things like this. While they should have been found, it is ultimately the ammunition owner’s responsibility to make sure they were compliant. I feel very badly for them and hope they can resolved it and get home but hopefully people will now be much more aware of things. I don’t think TSA is to blame for these people getting in trouble. But if the ammo was in their carryon luggage I think it’s concerning that it wasn’t found. What else do they miss?

Well even if they have an error/missed rate of less than a %, think about the number of screenings done and the number of missed items. I bet it is pretty significant when thought about as individual items…so I bet there are a lot/a large variety of things missed. I would think small loose bullets could be the easiest to be missed in a bag. Not sure on the metal aspect though. I bet most people would be shocked by what is missed. I hope I am wrong/way off base but I think realistically there are very few things we can guarantee as 100%, both machine/auromated and human related.

First sentence for Brian(?). One year suspended sentence, $6,700 fine. Will be released shortly. Honestly, after the delegation of US Politicians went down there and made an ass out of themselves this week demanding for their release "because it was all unintentional" and basically not wanting to respect the laws of a sovereign nation, I was hoping for some jail time at least. How laughable - because if someone came to our country and broke our laws never in a million years would we accept the statement of "it was unintentional - they didn't know". This ruling has now set a precedence and they'll all likely get the same sentence.
