I’m toying with the idea of putting an outdoor rug on our deck. But I don’t want to if it’s going to get all gross and manky. The deck is partially under a tree and gets a lot of afternoon sun. We have a large round patio table and chairs that would sit on the rug.
I see them around and like how they look, but if it’s just going to be a pollen and dirt catcher, I’ll pass. We have a composite wood/Trex deck and it does get warm, so I’m also thinking it would be cooler to stand on a rug when I’m bare foot.
Opinions?

It will depend on what the rug is made of as to how it holds up. You want one specifically made for outdoors that you can hose off and that dries quickly. I think mine must have some type of plastic material because it hoses off beautifully and has not gotten any moldy bits. I like mine a lot and am now considering one for my front porch.

I have one on my deck for aesthetics. It doesn't get much dirt on it but the deck is not connected to the ground. Pollen is bad here but it seems to wash away in the rain, or at least I don't notice it. It can be swept.
Go ahead and see what happens, you don't have keep it out there if you don't like it.

We have outdoor rugs on our patio and deck. I'm in SoCal, and love to be out there in my barefeet, but that would be impossible without the rugs. I have not had problems with them at all. They just get hosed off occasionally.

I have one that's made of plastic fibres so it doesn't rot or anything. If drinks get spilled or anything it can be hosed or scrubbed easily. I do think they make outside areas look great.

I feel like an outdoor rug would get moldy in this climate. IDK. I've never been brave enough to try one.

Bonus points for this description. I know exactly what you are talking about. But there are outdoor rugs that don't get that way. Especially the plasticky/vinylly ones. (I think I made up a word there.) Using a rug just finishes off a spot so nicely. I'd definitely opt for having one.

I vote yes. Just make sure it is 100% polypropylene so it breathes and won’t hang onto water and ruin your deck.

We do have one, BUT it's on a covered porch, so that cuts down a bit on how much it sun and such it gets day to day. It did get really gross after our yard flooded last summer, though. But because it's meant to be used outdoors, we brought it over to the driveway, gave it a scrub, hosed it down, and then dried it out over a few sawhorses and that did the trick. It's back in place looking great. And we really do enjoy having it on the porch.

Does the composite decking have potential to fade? I don't think it would, but if yes, a rug may leave a darker spot if left in same place over time.
I'd also wonder about the ability to slide chairs on a rug, might need different caps on the legs.
Love the look of outdoor rugs - hope it works!

My mom gave me one a few years ago she got on Wayfair - DH hated it because it didn't drain the rain though and the deck was sitting in wet.
So we pitched it. Got one at Costco last year that is "plastic" in feel sort of - it is meant for outdoor, and the rain drains through it and it dries well in the sun. Love it!

Thanks all! I hadn’t realized that the outdoor rugs were made of a synthetic material. I’ve never really looked at them that closely. The deck is only a few years old, but doesn’t seem to have faded. The previous owners had quite a bit of furniture on the deck, to include a fire pit and a sofa, and I don’t see any fade spots. But that is a good point.

I have had an outdoor rug on a concrete patio without any issues. I now have a covered screen porch and haven't had any issues. It dries quickly.

I don't know why I never realized that outdoor rugs were different than an indoor rug. I just thought that it was fade resistant and didn't have the rubberized backing that some rugs have. I have a trip to Costco planned tomorrow, so will look to see if they have any left there.

I have an outdoor rug covering a big crack in my patio. It has some mildew on it from last year over the winter. It does look nice but I wish it didn't have the mildew!

We will see if I find anything at this late date.

We had an outdoor rug that was on our patio under full cover. It faded in just one season. They look great, but don’t last long.

I love mine, but it’s on a screened porch. I wouldn’t want to clean it outdoors and in the shade.

I have one on my covered porch, that gets a lot of weather. I got it at Walmart a few years ago and it has held up very well. Some years I live it out all winter and summer. Some years I roll it up and put it in the garage for winter.
It is polypropylene, but it is more rug like than some. Some seem like thick twisted plastic weave - this has a more carpet feel. It dries fast after a rain. I generally give it a power wash every early summer. That cleans it up well and brightens it up. If it is really dry and we haven't had rain lately - I will give it a vacuum with my Shark when I am doing my living room. I just open the porch door and go out and vac. I can clear it with a broom too, if I need too.
I really like the rug to give my porch a more cozy feel. I have a composite decking surface on my porch (those old boards would only last 10 years max, so DH put the composite in about 20 years ago.
I got mine from Walmart.
