I have two contract days until summer. My June is pretty full with school stuff, but I meed this school year to be over.
Got an email from a kid failing my class 1 hour after the last finals were taken to see what he could turn in tomorrow to raise his grade...

I’ve got 5 days left and then graduation. Currently 2 seniors are failing algebra (required to graduate) and another is failing PE (required to graduate). I’m not holding out hope for them since they don’t seem interested in doing the minimal work that is required for them to earn a 60% in those classes. We’ve already notified parents. One of them (the one failing PE) told me I got him in trouble because I called and told his mom that he was failing PE and cannot graduate if he doesn’t pass it. 😂. He forgot the part where I told her that he is failing because he doesn’t come to class and hasn’t done any make up work to earn a grade for the days he’s missed.

My last day of school was on Tuesday!!
This was the final class of COVID students. That is, they started Kinder from home. I teach 3rd grade. It has been a challenging year as there are big deficits and gaps in their foundational skills. The students had huge growth, but the challenges are still there. I am looking forward to summer break!
I just finished my 28th year of teaching!! Retirement is right around the corner!
I’m happy for all my fellow educators who are enjoying a well-deserved summer break!!

tomorrow is DD17's last day before summer. I can't wait. She has done exactly NOTHING in school all week - they turned in chrome books on Monday and the AP exams are over. I really feel for the teachers this last week.

Got an email from a kid failing my class 1 hour after the last finals were taken to see what he could turn in tomorrow to raise his grade... My DH deals with this all. the. time. with his college students. "I PAID for this class - I need to pass it. What can I do?" "Well.... you coulda SHOWN UP once in awhile for class, especially on the POSTED EXAM days..." I still have a few weeks left, including our spring show. My grades are done, so the show is really the last big stressor.

I’m counting down the days until I don’t have to get up at 6:00 am, there are now three of those days left. DD has one last final for history and then she’s basically done. We got an email from the media center saying that her school issued Chromebook should be turned in this week, but when she returned the geometry textbook she checked out at the beginning of the year they told her she should keep the Chromebook at home over the summer and turn it in at the high school in the fall which to me makes no sense. She has today and two days next week in class, and the last day of school is a party followed by a field trip for her entire grade level. This will be their first “moving up” ceremony. They usually do one for the outgoing 5th graders and again in 8th, but her class missed out on the elementary one due to Covid. Then one more year of 6:00 am wake up calls, and the year after that they’re flipping the high school start time with the elementary start time so her school won’t start until 8:50 am, YEAH! And that day will not come soon enough.

That has to be hard as a teacher or the one to have to notify the parents. Here you have to have a 70% to pass anything less than a C is failing. Kind of hard to fail PE though. Good luck the end is so close.

Good luck the end is so close. I failed PE one year in high school... maybe 8th or 9th grade (7th-12th all in one huge school), I forget exactly what year. I absolutely hated to go swimming so I just never went to PE on swimming days. The reason I hated it was that there were only a couple of us who could swim really well so they focused on teaching everyone else. The few of us good swimmers were basically just left to hang around in the water. I didn't like rushing to get changed (into the awful school swim suits -- this was back in the Dark Ages remember), then having to just float around the pool for a short time, then rush back to the locker room to get changed again, then rush to class with wet hair....ugh. Of course I had to then go to summer school for PE of all things... But I remember that it didn't turn out too badly. I took French and PE, the French for review, and the PE was basically aerobics and dance for a month. Much better than swimming. haha

My dd has been teaching for 25 years, or so. She generally teaches summer school and uses that $$ to take her children on a vacation after summer school is over but before regular school starts. Her children are grown adults now, so this year she is going on a vacation with her bf.

Good luck the end is so close. It sucks to have to make that call but we’ve notified and told over and over and over so it should not be a surprise. Thankfully the 2 algebra kids pulled their heads out of their booty and managed to pull of passing (65 and 62) grades. PE kid chose to not come to school today. They now have an F with 2 days left. They can do 10 min activity videos to makeup for an absence but this kid has not done any and the deadline for those is Tuesday midnight. I don’t see them doing any videos. Oh well. Such is life for this kid. Choices have consequences and this time it might mean no graduation. It also means they either drop out because they’re over 18 or they choose to complete an online PE course which is wayyyyy more work than my 10 min stretching and 45 minute of a sport with no change out required.

We have 14 more days. We don’t finish until June 14. Seems like we’ll never get there. This has been my hardest year in the 16 I’ve taught. I’m a special educator and we had 3 of us for 85 students. So we were case managing almost each plus teaching a block a day so we had class prep on top of all the sped paperwork. Next year we’re fully staffed!! Thank God! I am doing paperwork, all evals and case managing our out of district kids. No teaching or services. Can’t wait for this year to be done.

Weird question... did many classes end on making slime for all grades as fun? Because seems to be a shortage of white glue to buy, even on Amazon. Making slime is fun for any age... lol!

My partner and I case manage about 25 kids each and teach the same amount of classes as the gen ed teachers (6 of 8 blocks). In your district there are sped who just do paperwork? Do others just teach and do no paperwork?

FTR, I failed PE
On Tuesday, a student asked what they could do to pass PE. All I could think was, "Run a half marathon?"
