I've always thought about grabbing something on the way to baggage claim but wouldn't sit there and eat it. I usually fly American and they don't have the 20 minute guarantee that some airlines do. Even though I usually am toward the back of the plane and walk a good distance to baggage claim, it's still usually a wait to get bags at DFW.

I remember when I started flying over 30 years ago. You had to show your baggage ticket in order to get your bags. So do they have any recourse? Usually you file with your airline when a bag goes missing (I’ve had to a couple of times, and the bags got to me eventually, although i had a carseat that did not make it). I don’t know that there is recourse if the bag is stolen (or how they know these bags were stolen, as opposed to picked up by mistake or something else).

I would not sit down to eat. Depending on the airport and situation, I might stop and get a quick snack or coffee. Baggage rarely beats me to the claim area, so I would feel comfortable in some spaces taking 10-15 minutes.
ETA: I will say, someone mentioned it up thread, but I do think baggage usually comes faster than it used to, so I would keep it brief.

Every once in a great while I’ve been asked to pull out my baggage ticket - maybe once every 2 years or something like that.

Sit down, order and then send the teens to fetch the bags. ha!
Good idea in theory. but reality is your kids wouldn't be able to get back through security to join you to eat. Geeze, I wasn't aware that baggage was outside of the secure area. Like I mentioned before, I don't travel much, but I would hope baggage would be secure at all time so that no one could tamper with it and that's not just stealing it, but putting things in there that shouldn't be.

In theory, checked bags are with airline employees, on the plane or with the owners except for the few minutes it may take for a bag o make it to its owner on the carousel so there should never really be an opportunity for bags to be tampered with.

In just about any airport I have been in there is really no security for the bags. I could literally go into the baggage claim area and act like a passenger and pick up a bag without anyone knowing better. (for the most part). I haven't shown a baggage ticket in literally years. I'm sure there is security and so forth watching but no one has ever stopped me from picking up my own bag and walking out with it. No one knows it was my bag and where I came from.

I've flown a lot for many years and nobody ever checked my bag claim tag. Security isn't paying any attention. It's a miracle that more bags don't get stolen.

Years and years ago there were workers who did check those claim tickets and match to the bag, but that was a l-o-n-g time ago.
I have observed remaining bags being set aside.
Twice I have had the airline deliver my bag the next day because it didn't make the flight I was on.

Always, always, put AirTags or similar in any checked bag. When your bag misses the plane, it's not much comfort to see it sitting in the airport you left a few thousand miles away, but at least you know it wasn't stolen. And if it is stolen, you've got an address to which you can send police. Again, when packing a bag for travel: AirTag yes, bullets no.

So do they have any recourse? The family said there should be policies in effect to stop this from happening. There was video of a woman taking the 2 bags, then putting them outside beside a bench. A car with 2 men took the bags from there.

The more I think about it, the more annoyed I am that people are blaming this family for going to eat instead of blaming the d*ckhead who swiped the bags. Sounds like there should be more people checking bag claim tickets inconveniencing the rest of us because of said d*head. 🤬

It's rare that we check a bag, though we have some upcoming travel where that's the plan because we're traveling for my daughter's baby shower. I can say with pretty solid confidence that I am wound way too tight to stop and eat on the way to baggage claim. I hate flying anyway, so when I add that anxiety on top of my general control freak nature--nope. I think I'd even think twice about hitting the bathroom on the way.

For a family of 4 - 1 or 2 of us would go get the bags while the others went to get food.
I don’t trust the airport personnel here as they don’t verify if the bags you’re taking are yours or not. It’s a bit of a free for all.
I’m sorry this happened to them as the baggage claim ought to be more secure.

Considering we had to wait 1 hour for our bags to come after our spring break trip this year and 3 1/2 hours a few years ago, I would consider it.

A car with 2 men took the bags from there. Any policies would involve hiring more people to check people’s bag tags, which would cost money and slow people down in travel. I don’t think that is worth it just so that a family can have dinner in the airport and not monitor their bags. I am not blaming the family for having their bags stolen, but it does seem like most people understand you are not supposed to stop for a significant amount of time on your way to baggage claim. ETA: when I have flown internationally the baggage claim is inside the secure area because you generally get your bag and then go through customs; that would fix the problem, but one, I’m doubting airports would retrofit expensively to do that, and two, I am betting some people wouldn’t want to carry luggage an extra distance without help.

No way. I'm too paranoid about someone grabbing my luggage - I want to be there when the bags start coming out on the carousel. Call it PTSD from having lost/delayed luggage and fearing it won't turn up during a trip.

You're perfectly welcome to catch a bite when you deplane, but wouldn't you rather get out of the airport and eat some decent food that doesn't cost a mortgage payment?

But it all depends on what time you land, if you know the area, traffic, etc. One friend told me that one time it took them over an hour to get their rental car. I can see how it is "easy" to just pick up something at the airport.
