I don’t have anything other than a bald eagle flying 50’ above me to share, but it was pretty darn cool.

I always find it interesting that people say Happy Memorial Day. This is a day for remembering the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

Yeah, this is a pet peeve of mine each year. I really think most people -- especially non Americans -- dont realize what Memorial Day is actually for.

We have a gold star family next door - her older brother died in Vietnam. They have a special flag, red border with a gold star in. Center, on display.
We are 10 mins from the beach and the roads have been packed all weekend. I love summer, except for tourists.

The mama and the papa were out in the backfield yesterday after they cut the feed for their cows. Pretty sure they were picking up dead animals. The male flew right over my head and I was not quick enough with my cell phone

Growing up my grandmother always called it Decoration Day. Not sure when they changed to name.
For my family it is a day of reflection. Hearing about the mudslides in New Guinea has brought it closer than normal. My uncle was killed in New Guinea during WWII, he is buried in Manila..

Grandparents moved east in the 1920s from Chicago and earlier they were raised in Michigan.

Growing up, my parents + grandparents called it Decorations Day as well (they were from SW Louisiana). My dad's best friend/best man in his wedding was killed in the Vietnam War and they always made the trek to his grave to take a small flag and fresh flowers. We never 'celebrated' or had any type of party on Decoration Day. If anything, it was a hard, somber day for my Dad so we usually stayed out of the way.

Yeah, this is a pet peeve of mine each year. I really think most people -- especially non Americans -- dont realize what Memorial Day is actually for. In the Netherlands, Memorial Day is honoured at a large American cemetery in the south of the country - there are always many Dutch civilians in attendance. I hope this link to some photos on Facebook works: www.facebook.com/LiberationZuidLimburg. (It is a post from today.)

Yes, thank you claire. Our military sacrifices are honored in many places, particularly after WWII throughout Europe.

I think the Happy came from when they made national holidays fall on a Monday so those who work could have a 3-day weekend. I don't think the happy greeting is meant for the specific day to honor the fallen, but to wish individuals a happy long weekned. Does need some revision, so its not mistaken as disrespect.
