I own an assisted living home very close to the town park entrance. Our residents have expressed interest in a wind chime for the porch they sit on the most. I would like a nice sounding one because it will be heard by a lot of people simply because of the location. I don't want something cheap from the dollar store but also have come to realize they can be quite an investment.
I'm going to more than likely need to order online. What should I be looking for? What do you like about your wind chime? What should I stay away from? I may be overthinking this but I'm just not sure when ordering and not being able to hear it first.

IMO, windchimes are hard to buy without hearing them! My favorite is similar to this: this one. It has a deep, rich tone. Mine has a star fish at the top with 4 lines of shells.

I have one I got at L.L. Bean years ago. A single piece of triangle-shaped steel. It’s not a tinkly sounding chime. It’s more like a gentle “bong, bong, bong” sound.

I am not sure, but it is something I would want to hear in person and preferably not order on line. I live in an area that I would not dare have one. My parents live rurally and they have a Maine Buoy bells/North Country Wind Bell, as my mom loves the sound of it. For many it is probably too much of a one note sound. But to us it is quintessential Maine/New England sound.
I would try garden stores, gift type stores, craft shops, etc. Any place I could hear them in person.
ETA - sorry I misread that you will probably have to order online. I wonder if some place in the description they provide sounds clips? Maybe look for something like that. I think the bigger you get or wider diameter maybe a more deeper sound? But don’t trust that.
Antoher ETA I think they are callled Maine Buoy Bells if searching.

I've looked locally and not found anything other than very inexpensive tinkly ones. I was hoping there was some knowledge about wind chimes that the peas could impart on me to help make this decision! lol

sorry so big, I will try to resize. These are not cheap but this is a type of Maine Buoy Bells/north country wind bell.I think they have a deeper sound than chimes. You can get them in various sizes and styles. Here is a better sized picture.

In a regular wind chime I would think the material would change the sound. Metal tubes would be less tinkling like than say a ceramic.

Wind chime can be very divisive. Crazy, I know. A lot of people hate them with a passion. Our houses and backyards are relatively small, so the only kind I have ever purchased have been the small tinkling type. I usually find them at Joannes, Michael’s, Hobby lobby. I buy glass, Seaglass, or chimes with very small tubes.
For deeper more calming tones, try looking for bronze wind chimes. They are often labeled Deep Tone Wind Chimes, Memorial Wind Chimes, Serenity Chimes, Resonance Wind Chimes, etc. They are reasonably priced on Amazon and most websites offer sound snippets so you can tell what they sound like. This is a good time to try to buy wind chimes because garden centers often will carry them for patio decor. Lowes, Home Depot, Menards and our local Do It Best hardware and Ace Hardware stores usually stock them around this time of year.

We got Bells of Vienna chimes. They sound beautiful. Different tones. They don't clank.

I have about 6 in front of my house. I don't care if I am "that" neighbor. I buy ones that are on the pricey side because they will fall apart if you don't spend good money. I like to hear them before I buy.

Costco has one for sale right now that the box says is tuned. I can only imagine the person at the windchime factory that has to tune thousands of wind chimes per day...

I love the sound of wind chimes. My next door neighbor had the tinkle light sounding ones right opposite to my windows and you could hear them from every room in my house. I admit, it became annoying. Fortunately, he and I got along quite well and when I noticed he had some of the metal tube chimes in his back yard, I asked him to trade them out with the tinkle sounding one. He agreed to do so and I appreciated it very much. Our homes were all quite close together so I could still hear the other ones, but not as loudly. He ended up with probably 8 in total. That was too much for our close houses, but I figured there could be much worse things to live next to so I never complained. The neighbors on the other side of his house did complain and that made him buy even more to set up on that side of his house. The two families had a long war that went on for the entire 35 years that the newer family lived in our neighborhood. And as much as I was never the kind of neighbor that got involved in that stuff, my neighbor felt the need to tell me every single perceived slight they did to him. And since I refused to take sides, the woman in the other house always felt the need to fill me in on the happenings from her side too. I just tried to be empathetic to both families. And I was happy that my side of his home got the wind chimes with the rich deep bong sounds.

I have a few really nice ones. I get them at fancy garden shops. My fave are Corinthian Bells. You can hear them here but they are cheaper on Amazon or elsewhere.

We just bought one for our camper site. We got it at Ace hardware. Our store has a lot of nice garden decor. The wind chime is nice and twinkly sounding, not too loud etc.

Her neighbors in the condo's hated it. So she took it down. I never saw it again.
