I know we have had threads about this before, but I was in Target (in the suburbs here) for the first time in maybe a month, and it was the worst it has been. My $10 shower gel was locked up, the men’s deoderant was locked up, socks were locked up, and every single station took 4-5 tries on the “summon help” button and at least five minutes to get help.
I used to swing through Target 1-2 times a week while my kids were at soccer practice, but I actually think I am done. I just subscribed to a number of items I usually get at Target on Amazon instead. Not that I want to give Amazon my $ either, but this is silly.

I knock on wood that my Target isn’t like that yet. The Walmart across the street from my Target locks things up, but for some reason Target doesn’t. I go to Target to get the things that Walmart locks up. I hate to have to wait for a clerk all the time.

Not that it will likely help much, but I would find a way to let them know how disappointed you are over this and that it’s forcing you to shop elsewhere.
One other thought, does that store offer drive up? Ours does where you can order online or through the app ahead of time and then just go to one of their designated spots in the lot and they bring your stuff right out to you when you get there. If you knew what you needed ahead of time, you could order it online and swing through when you’re in the area. It’s free and usually they have the orders turned around in a couple hours or less.

Before you completely write them off try their pick up. It’s really easy and has drastically cut down my impulse shopping.

I only do Drive up and Go at Target. Though I haven't been inside my Targets in a while. So, I don't know if stuff is locked up, yet. It's really sad that we're a society that has to lock up our stores due to theft.

They are definitely pushing more and more for pick up orders. I have noticed that they are offering better savings if you order online and opt for in store or drive up pick up rather than going in the store. I recently picked up a brass planter and the one the employee picked was all scratched and had a dent, the other two on the shelf were perfect. I ended up swapping them out but what a waste of my time if I still had to go inside and do my own shopping just to save a couple of bucks. I don’t expect the employees to scrutinize items as much as I would as a customer but it was a pretty obvious scratch and dent.
None of the stuff at my Target is locked up yet but I have noticed in other areas things are getting those shelves but they are always unlocked.

I live in a city of about 130,000 people, about an hour from LA. Things are not locked up in any of the 3 Targets I go to. I was just visiting my sister outside of Portland, her little town had nearly everything locked up as did the Wal-Mart in the area. Seemed weird to me. I'm not sure I would bother to go if everything were locked up like that.

It's really sad that we're a society that has to lock up our stores due to theft. It used to be that many/most things were behind a store counter and had to be retrieved for you by an employee. The idea that stores just leave tons of stuff unattended is a relatively new one in history. Theft will be a problem as long as poverty and greed are problems. If Target wants to lock stuff up at this point, though, I think they need to assign an employee to each department/section whose job it is to unlock stuff. They should be able to offset the cost of this with a lot less lost to theft. But I also agree with those who say to just use curbside. Or in my city, delivery is super fast from Target - usually one or two days.

I am sick of having no cashiers and being expected to use self checkout everywhere, no employees available on the floor, and inaccurate POS systems. I was at Target on Sunday because they had a few good Memorial Day sale items and I had a $50 off coupon that was expiring. When I got to the checkout the cashier had to manually give me the sale price on the items (soda & chips) because they wouldn't ring up correctly. They were items that had huge displays and tons of signs hung all over them. His response was "Oh yeah, the sales never work". But if I hadn't asked why I wasn't getting the sale price I would have just been charged full price. The coupon I had didn't work either. He had to call a manager over who took me to another register and told me "These things never work, we've had tons of them come through and not a single one works." She had a stack of $10 gift cards there and used five of them to pay for my order. She told me that the issues with Target Circle and the sales not working are so bad they just have this stack of gift cards they hand out to customers all the time, there is no limit or anything on how they can use them. That's Target's way of fixing the issues, just use a gift card. Which again, is all based on a customer realizing that something is not correct while they are still in the store. It's completely ridiculous and I'm about done with Target. My Target isn't too bad as far as locking things up, Walmart is terrible. I've always said if they are going to keep the store under lock and key there should be an employee stationed at every aisle waiting to assist people. Pushing a button and waiting 5+ minutes for a response or having to hunt down an employee to be told they don't have the key and have to page another employee causing another 5+ minute wait, is really just unacceptable. And I'm not going to reward them by just ordering, if I have to order it, I'll do so from Amazon.

Not a great solution, but this is why do curbside pick up to avoid needing to wait.

Our Target isn't like that but our Wal-mart is. I asked for printer ink and the guy had to walk it up front and then told me I had to go a specific register to get it and check out. Face lotion is also locked up. It's frustrating.

I agree. I was in the one in SF and so much stuff is locked up. Plus it is 2 levels which I just don’t really like. I might still make an extra long trip to go to my old one out in the suburbs

All Targets are going to be the same, there was a thread about this not long ago. Target put out a statement that certain things in all stores will be locked. I haven't seen it in our store yet, but I am sure it will be soon.

I just am irritated enough now that I don’t want to give them business!

My sister does the drive up. I don't even want to go to the busy shopping center where our Targets are so I use their shipping and my orders are always free shipping because I spend more than $35 each time. I get my order within two days or so.

I probably posted the last Target annoyance thread (because they now have people selling phone plans in my store.)
It seems stupid to order online when the store is walking distance from my house (not that I want to walk a mile with a 24 pack of toilet paper...) but maybe I will try store pick up before giving up. The last time I tried to do a pick-up at Target (during Covid when they were counting how many people to let in the store) so much of what I needed was not pick-up eligible that I gave up and went somewhere else...

We don’t have everything locked up yet but 1 store near me really only wants you to use the drive up service. Recently I picked up there and they told me next time to do drive up.
I try to avoid Walmart but it’s the closest so in a pinch I go. Literally every employee is on their phone with AirPods in except the greeters. Always surprised that it’s allowed.

That would drive me nuts. None of my Targets are locking things up, but I would hate it if they did.
The thing I don't get is why don't they just start checking receipts like the do at Costco and Walmart? To me that would be easier than having to buy cages and pay employees to run around and unlock all day.
Either that or have some sort of scanning thing at the exits that won't release the gate if there is something unscanned. I wouldn't mind that at all, better to have the merchandise all out in the open so I can shop and be a little inconvenienced on my way out with a slight delay.

It's too bad that their in-store experience has gone downhill. I used to choose Target for miscellaneous items because it was a nice atmosphere to browse with a Starbucks beverage purchased at the front of the store. Way nicer than Walmart, and I was willing to pay a bit more for that environment. They've definitely lost that advantage to me.

I just am irritated enough now that I don’t want to give them business! I have to say if you use their app it’s actually pretty easy because most if not all of the things I regularly buy there show up in my “for you” section. They make it easy to just click on the things you want to add to your cart and at that point you can choose if you want pickup in store, drive up or delivery, plus it also shows all the available deals and coupons you can add too. I wouldn’t like using it for fresh produce or meat (which I don’t tend to buy at Target anyway), but for things like soap, detergent, shampoo or cleaning supplies I really wouldn’t care too much about someone picking those items off the shelf for me. My issue with drive up is that I like to browse and look at other things in the store because I get reminded of all the stuff my family forgot to add to the list.

I think it’s easier at a place like Costco because everything they sell is supersized which makes it easier for someone working the door to quickly scan your cart. Target sells everything onesie twosie plus lots of little things like hair clips, individual cans of soup or a pack of gum. For someone buying a cartload of stuff, it would take forever to get out of the store if someone had to go through all that.

Our Target is not doing that--at least last week they were not.
I blame the thieves--if Target does not prevent the theft, there will be no store. It is a shame that someone resorts to theft for their needs.

And I'm not going to reward them by just ordering, if I have to order it, I'll do so from Amazon. Many years ago we had a very large K-mart to shop in not too far from my house. They had the same issue of advertised sale prices not ringing up correct at the register. They were sued over it. After the lawsuit, if you caught another occurrence of the register not being correct when your item was scanned, and you observed II and called them on it, they had to give you $5. And that was $5 for each time it occurred with your order. So if you were buying a few of the same sale item and it was not correct, you got $5 for each of your multiple sale items. I learned about this when I overheard someone at the check stand next to mine when she caught an error with her items. I asked the clerk at my check stand if a manager would immediately get into the system to fix the problem or just how long it took them to update the registers when a mistake was discovered. She said she had never seen anyone updating any of the mistakes and that she would see the same error occurring for the entire duration of a sale. She said they were not allowed to tell their customers when they were being overcharged and entitled to that $5 penalty. I guess the store figured they made more money on the overcharges than the $5 penalty cost them. They were counting on the customers not being aware of the policy or not noticing that they were not getting that advertised sale price. I started studying their flier to see if any of my purchases were supposed to be on sale, then I clipped the ad photo for those items and taped them to my shopping list. I wasn’t going to get cheated once I learned about the policy. I also warned other people in line if I saw that they had a sale item in their cart. I advised them to watch the register to make sure they received the right price. I caught mistakes several times and made them take the time to get my $5 penalty money. If it is happening at your Target on a regular basis too, I would check to see if there is a lawsuit pending.
