I need to catch up on life with the Refupeas!
As for me, it'll be 6 years this November that I have lived in Pittsburgh after leaving Southern CA. I am still with my bf that I met on FB. I continue to work part-time at a grocery store (I was three years in January) and he is still working as a General Manager in food service (40+ years). We are just living the simple life with our cats. We moved around a lot in recent years (locally) but found our spot in the South Hills last year. We still rent but we like our landlord and he seems to like us.
I lost my mom a bit over 2 years ago (dad has been gone awhile). That was hard. I am close to two siblings but we don't talk to two others. One of them is the executor of my mom's estate and we are still in court regarding that situation. Hopefully that ends this year.
My adult kids are still in CA but now live independently of their dad. My 24 year old son lives with his partner and has a self-created Youtube channel that covers the news of North County San Diego. He recently got a lucrative deal with a law firm for advertising on it and he continues to generate income in related ways. He doesn't seem comfortable leaving his area either due to work or other reasons but I respect that. I get back at least annually to see him and we stay in touch regularly.
My 27 year old daughter is now a teacher in the district she attended in North County San Diego. This year, she has been teaching in the STEM lab and has done reading support. For this coming Fall, she will be teaching first grade. She's excited for the challenge of that! She and I are close and we see each other as often as possible. We met up in Nashville last year and just recently met up in Austin for a wedding. She also comes here (just visited for Mother's Day) and I get back to CA when I can. She has expressed some interest in coming my way (and both kids are welcome) but I also respect that her whole life is in CA. We also talk on the phone at least daily.
Pittsburgh may not be our final destination as I would like to maybe get more central someday. However, I did recently sign up for a 2 year Pastry Arts Associate program though our local junior college. I'm not sure yet what I will do with it but maybe we will open a bakery since my bf has years of restaurant management experience. I already have an Associates so hopefully some of my GE transfers in.
My brother lived with my mom in CA for many years before her passing. He has been quite lost since then and has traveled the country twice looking for his next spot. Eventually he landed in Pittsburgh too (at least for now). He just had open-heart surgery so I am helping him somewhat to recover from that. He is living nearby in an assisted living type of place where he gets his meals and doesn't have to deal with stairs as he would if he lived with us.
Life is good here as a whole. I completed my goal of walking the Pittsburgh Half Marathon last year. I dedicated it to my mom as she loved her hometown. I also stay busy here exploring different towns/trails and putting my pictures on Pittsburgh Neighborhood photos on FB where I am an admin. People seem to appreciate pictures from home. I'd like to find someplace to get dance lessons for me and my BF. Not looking for a big commitment though since I'll be busy with school/work in the Fall.
I hope everyone here is doing well. I hope to check in more regularly now that we are more settled.
