So, I seem to have joined this. I watched Justine's little intro blurb video and I didn't want to punch her. That's unusual lately, so I was encouraged! It's a free event that seems to be focused on teaching quick card design principles rather than giving tutorials for creating specific cards. I just watched the slightly longer Kick Off event video and still didn't want to punch her. Maybe she's just over pregnant woman smugness syndrome? Dunno. But I thought I'd share.

You made me laugh!
But I went and signed up. I’m not really interested in the Bingo activities, but I am curious about what she’ll be teaching, and since it was free, why not?

Funny she isn’t a favorite of mine either, but I signed up for this a week or so ago! I’m not doing all the fun/chat stuff as I’m still working full time and super busy.
But I’m a pretty simple card maker so I’m hoping to enjoy it.

The verbal tics got to me a little more today, but I think I like the principles she's espousing and how she explains them.

I don't know if any of you skipped the kick off, but the lessons are available for 24 hours, until the next one drops. I think there's some sort of catch up Sunday or Monday when all three are available, but I don't remember the details. IOW, it does work vaguely similarly to the various Brandi Mahon summits.

Yes, the lessons are available on replay until the next one starts, and then there will be a 24 hour period when they're all available at the end. Linda and scrapnnanaThe lesson(s) are very quick if you skip through the intro and don't stay to watch the Q&A. I was listening while doing something else this morning and between listening and glancing up at the slides it's pretty easy to absorb the gist. Today was really about limiting supplies so you can make quick decisions about where to start, using supplies you already own, even if the cards themselves aren't necessarily quick. Note, there are no actual demos of cardmaking in this challenge so you don't need to be sitting at your desk with supplies ready to craft. You just need 10-15 minutes to listen and think

That's a beautiful card Shakti! I love the bold focal flower and the 20s style of the background and sentiment. Are those from a single set or did you mix and match?

TL; DR: It's a combination of three sets that Altenew almost certainly intended to work well together. I think some of their inspiration photos show some elements together, though not the ones I chose.
Mostly from a single set. You might have noticed/might recall that the thing that really drew me to my first Altenew virtual retreat was an art deco style set called Streamlined. The retreat kit had an embossing folder, background stamp set with sentiments, and a die set for the sentiments. The rest of the kit was not really so related, though there was a floral die set a couple instructors used with the deco items.
This spring, almost exactly a year later, Altenew released a slew of art deco themed sets, including a floral die set called Streamlined Sprig that coordinates much better (no real surprise) with the other Streamlined sets. The sentiment and its little shape thingy (I have no idea what to call that -- sentiment carrier maybe? -- were also released recently. The art deco hibiscus set may have been a few months ago. I had my eye on it, but until the other elements dropped, I resisted.
The hibiscus set itself is very different. It has the outline stamp, a stencil with simple coloring for the hibiscus base color, both base and shadowing for the stem and flower base (or whatever you call the green part between stem and flower), as well as a leaf and corner flourish (neither of which I used) and then layering stamps you use to add layers/details. So, both greens and the pale orange are blended/stenciled, the darker red and the yellow of the stamens (I think that's what that part of the flower is called) are layering stamps. It was a really neat way of layering.
I have had vague plans to figure out how all of this art deco stuff fit together and it was nice to have inspiration to not overthink it, just pull it out and do the obvious/simple thing. I literally followed the layering guide for the focal image and used the mini deco set for the sentiment. I've kind of known I was going to try tone-in-tone stamping with that background stamp since the retreat a year ago.
EtA: I put the background together with the focal image because they both came from art deco style sets. I am pretty chuffed to see, now that the card is completed, how the shape in the background echoes the shape of the blossom. It was total serendipity that I probably could not have planned if I tried.

That's perfect - exactly the kind of attitude that I think Justine is trying to encourage Playing with what you have and seeing what happens. And there you go - whether a happy accident, or subconscious association, you've discovered a great pairing.

It’s a lovely card, Shakti . I’m not continuing with the challenge. I have company coming in a few weeks, my DH just got out of the hospital, and it’s bad timing for me. I decided to spend yesterday reorganizing a closet that really needed an overhaul. It was time well spent. I’ll look forward to seeing your take on the challenges, though.

First, I must admit that I already have a special bin where I put things that I am excited to use, so i didn't really have to select across my whole stash yesterday, or even all the things I've never used.
As for today's homework, I also tend to have a list in my craft journal of things I might want to try at some point. I'm also thinking of sort of "cheating" -- an embossing folder arrived yesterday with which I intend to try a technique from the Online Card Class...it would kind of be homework for both classes, right?

So...I pulled out a cover die to use for a card. I've run it through my Gemini Jr 4 times with different cardstock and sandwiches. It's STILL not cutting completely and I'm starting to wonder if it's time to move it to the donation bin and try something else. Off to try ONE last time and then I'll grab a different cover die and see if I can actually get a card made.

update - I gave up on that cover die and pulled out my only other cover die and used that instead. Turned out pretty simple

And for Day 2 I tried inking an embossing folder (new-to-me technique)

Did you try the bubble mailer shim trick with your die, linda ? no...I'm not familiar with that but I'm game to try. I'll google and see if I can figure it out. I do like that die so hopefully I can get it working.

Pinkfresh definitely has at least one video featuring it, but I've seen it elsewhere as well, so I'm sure you'll find it.
It's one of the two reasons I hoard bubble mailers (the other being the obvious "to mail things in").

I already seem to approach card making in the way that Justine is advising so I’m not really getting much from this challenge. That’s OK. I’m glad the videos are short and to the point, and it’s a great place to start for beginners and (I’m guessing) people with a lot of stash who only make a few cards here and there.

I thought yesterday's messaging about techniques was less clear. There was "don't try something once and give up when you get frustrated. That made some sense. I have settled on some techniques I like better than others, but not after trying them once. And even now, I do use them, they're just not my "GO TOs".
Then there was something about learn everything you can about a technique, which sometimes seemed to be about doing as many different things as you can without investing in additional equipment and sometimes seemed like keeping a list of things you'd like to try. Sometimes it seemed related to the not giving up on something after trying it once, and that didn't make sense to me. If I'm frustrated with something, you better believe that I am going to set that whole technique aside for a bit and try working with something different for a change of pace.
I thought there was a third one and it's escaping me now.
As for today, I suspect I violate the "rule of three" in a lot of my very own card designs, but they please MY eye. Dynamic balance must be hard work....

I think the biggest thing I'm getting from it is just pulling out supplies I haven't used or rarely use and trying something new (supply or technique wise). As primarily a scrapbooker, it's been helpful to watch a SHORT video and then go make a card.

Does anyone recall how we received the handouts? If I can't access my printouts right now, can I find them on her website? FB group? Or am I SOL...?
