Ideally it will have a beach or something that is relaxing and a time to just get away. It could also have touristy things to do or beautiful views.
Just needs to be mostly safe and able to be navigated by a small town, solo, almost 50 traveler.
There are so many options, I'm having difficulty narrowing ny search.

When I need to get away, my favorite place is Shelter Cove CA. It's on the Lost Coast, very remote, black sand beaches and as you come off the highway to get there, you are at The Avenue of the Giants! My happy place.

Are you looking East Coast, West Coast, US or more international?
ETA - Ocean type beach or just body of water like a lake?

I would choose a beach somewhere along the Florida panhandle... somewhere between Pensacola and Panama City... I enjoy Destin.. its not super small but doesn't have big beach town feels either... lots of walking areas and a really nice beach...
You can airbnb or vrbo a condo right on the beach... theres a lot of restaurants..
I am not sure if you are driving or needing to fly.. if you fly then Key West is really great for solo travel... everything is walking or golf cart driving distance away... you could also rent a beach bike if you wanted..

Ocean City, NJ? Its quiet still, well relatively quiet, this time of year. Should be picking up in the next couple weeks. My sister and I go the Sat after Labor day for the week. Its heaven, the sweet spot. Still warm. I can't swim in the ocean, but its still warm enough to walk at the edge ankle deep. Stores are still open. Anyway, I'm sorry to ramble...

Are you wanting a warm beach to lie on or any beach for the views? Might narrow it down, but I am partial to the Florida panhandle with the white sand. Destin is particularly pretty.

I love Destin but it has gotten so crowded. I would recommend a little farther down the Florida panhandle in the Seaside area. There is such cute shopping and everyone walks and rides bikes.

These are my ideas for July:
Stay at RiverRanch in Tahoe. Sleep to the sound of the river, hike along the truckee river, bike ride and sit on the beach and eat good food.
Rent a cabin on a lake in Grand Tetons
Pick a pretty island in the Carolina’s or Florida.

I am going to offer an away from the beach option and say Palm Springs. You can get a home with a pool or stay at a really nice hotel with pools. There is art all around. Great dining. The tram to the top of the mountains for hiking. The zoo. Joshua Tree is nearby for hiking and star gazing. You may catch when we have meteor showers. There are some great resorts and I find Pal Springs to be very safe.

I would love to take a solo trip to the coast of Oregon (Cannon Beach especially) or Maine (Camden or Bar Harbor).

I will add you have Cabazon close by with outlet retail shopping. The San Bernardino mountains near by. Big Bear has it's own huge lake. Hiking. Oak Glen is about 30 min away. Hiking, natural areas, the tube slide, the park at the old school house. Lake Arrowhead. Shops. Dining.
To me it will be better traffic wise than the beach. It can take an hour to go a few lights. Southern CA beach areas are gonna get really busy.
There will be great though as it is in the desert

Domestic or foreign?
I've taken beach vacations solo in Seabrook, WA (renting a tiny house), Cannon Beach, OR, and multiple places in Maine (Castine, Blue Hill, Camden, Ogunquit). All felt safe and were nice breaks; they aren't exactly warm-water beaches.
I'm not a beach international traveler, but a female friend of mine (single late 40s) went to Donostia/San Sebastian alone in Spain and could not stop raving. I don't think she went in July FWIW.

Totally agree about Palm Springs. Especially if you like mid century architecture. Cold also day trip to Joshua Tree NP.

The North Shore of MN is stunning - great hiking, cute places to stay, nice little towns. I’d recommend renting a condo at Lutsen or Bluefin Bay. You are a short drive to the beautiful town of Grand Marais. There are nice places to stay in GM too. You could easily split up a trip and stay more towards Duluth for part of it and work your way further north to explore another area.

The Michigan side of Lake Michigan has great beaches- just be mindful of the riptides, they kill people every year. Lots of cool small towns to explore- Saugatuck, South Haven, Geand Haven, Traverse City, Petoskey, etc

My mom lives in Petoskey in the summer, so I'll be going up to visit. Not sure what all she has planned, but I know we are going to Mackinac Island one day, and biking to Charlevoix. Can't wait to get away from this oppressive Texas heat!

I’d head to California bc I live in Wyoming and it’s an easy, short travel day there, as opposed to heading east.
La Jolla, Carmel, Monterey, and my very most favorite Morro Bay.

If you're up for international, Portugal is really affordable and has some beautiful beaches and hikes. I did a quick trip there and really want to go back.

I’d head to California bc I live in Wyoming and it’s an easy, short travel day there, as opposed to heading east. La Jolla, Carmel, Monterey, and by very most favorite Morro Bay. I love these ideas! Downtown La Jolla is walkable and there is stunning hiking at Torrey Pines. You can uber to other parts of San Diego if you want to but you would have amazing food and beautiful walks all around you in La Jolla. In the Morro Bay area (Central CA coast) my favorite small town is Cambria with the Moonstone beach walk. Carmel and Monterey are fantastic and Carmel is very walkable. We like to go to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree but not in the summer. It is too hot to hike safely. I don't do well in high humidity so wouldn't go to Florida in June or July. Maybe you're more adaptable to high temps/high humidity than I am!! Other places with beautiful summer weather are Maine, and coastal Oregon and Washington. There are so many great small towns with beautiful beaches and hiking nearby.

Coastal Oregon was one of our very favorite trips. Loved it there! So beautiful. We went in July. Took 10 days to slowly meander down the whole coastline and loved every second of it. Being from Texas, it was so nice to walk the beach in the summer without dying from the heat. We would go back again anytime!
