Edit as a comment down below.
Hope, our 3-3.5 yr old shih tzu mix had a seizure about 30 minutes ago.
What can I expect when we see the vet? I figured labs. Anything else?
Do meds get started right away?
Any peas BTDT?
She woke us up howling and was laying on her side. Wouldn't come to when calling her name. Picked her head up, began to twitch and shake then flopped it down. Then woke up, was confused and began to vomit. She also urinated while having the seizure.
She is currently sleeping next to me.
She was in her crate in our room when this occured.

Seizures scared the heck out of me. I had two dogs that had seizures. In both cases it was medication related. My first dog it was the heartworm pill Sentinel. It took me three months of doses to isolate that the seizures occurred after I gave the pill. We switched him to another heartworm med and he never had a problem again.
Chloe's Chihuahua had a seizure so bad he went blind for 5 days. We were scared his sight was never going to come back. But it did. It was the flea medication Bravecto that caused his seizures. I caught that sooner for him than the other dog because of the past experience I had. It's been like 3 years he's been off the Bravecto and not another seizure.
This is my experience with dogs with seizures. Neither of them had epilepsy.
I know you must be freaked out. They are scary as heck. ❤️

Hope isn't on any medication. Calling her vet right when they open to get her in. I told dh "why can't we have a healthy dog??" Sadie had kidney disease. Toby has cancer. And now Hope with seizures. God must think I have endless supplies of mom nurse in me. I don't ugh

I’m so sorry. Seizures are so scary. Our pup has epilepsy. To diagnose, they wanted to see if he had more, and how far apart. After he had 5, 2 in 1 day, they put him on Keppra. As far as we know, he has not had any since 2018.
I hope you are able to find the cause, and can get it under control.

My DDs dog is on Keppra for life.
Her first seizure was extreme and lasted for longer than 20 min, and only stopped when receiving an IV at the vet. She continued to have more seizures while in the vets office. We suspect she got into some type of poison, as DD lives in the boonies and the neighbor puts out poison to keep coyotes from eating his chickens. (Grrrrrr, another discussion for a difff day).
Drs will for sure do blood work to see if they see obvious causes. Nothing showed up, everything looked normal. They said the kids could take her to a neurologist, but that meds were recommended either way immediately because the seizures were so severe and they were having a hard time getting them to stop. They did not do that.
DDs vet is conservative about the meds and because DD suspected poison. she allowed DD to wean Shadow off after a while of not seizing, and as long as it was not more than once every so often, ( I forget if it was 3 or 6 weeks) she could stay med free. She did continue to seize, although not nearly as bad, so back on meds.
Shadow takes Simparica and DD and the vet are considering stopping that, because every once in a while she wil have a mild episode even on meds.
Other than the $$ and hassle of meds all the time, Shadow is a normal doggie.

Our dog Missy started having grand mal seizures when she was about 18 mos. old. After ruling out other causes, and as her seizures started to happen more frequently, our vet put her on phenobarbital. The phenobarb made her incontinent so we added Proin.
We learned that canine epilepsy generally shows up between 1 and 4 years old, so it's possible your dog is epileptic. The good news is that, with meds, Missy has had a happy and normal seizure-free dog life and is now an old lady of 12 who still enjoys romping at the dog park.
Wishing you and your pup the best.

Thanks for all the replies. Will update after we see the vet.
She enjoyed her morning walk, ate her breakfast and is now snuggled up in his Squishmallow bed.

Have any of their doses needed to be adjusted? Or did they stay on the same dose?
And do they get labs to check for like kidney and liver function like humans due to the meds?
Both dd and ds have non epileptic seizures. Dd has absence and ds has a wide range. His is due to missing a part of his brain that didn't develope and inability to regulate body temperature.
Dd was on meds and was weaned off at 13. No longer on any.

And yes, she gets yearly bloodwork to check kidney and liver function to be sure the meds aren’t hurting her.

The kids did not have to adjust and play with dose with Keppra to see what was effective, but they started out on the Keppra every eight hours, three times a day. It is important to give the meds on time apparently. They had to switch to the 12hr extended release Keppra given twice a day, because with work and stuff they just could not do every 8 hours. It seems to be working fine.

We saw her vet and are waiting on the labs. About 1 hour more. If those are clear, she will be started in Keppra. 2x a day to start. Then if needed 3x a day.

Update
Labs are perfect. Most likely epilepsy. Starting Keppra tonight. Vet said 1 seizure a month is fine. More and we will need to up her dose to 3x a day. Starting at am and pm dose.
In 6 months will do labs and if no seizures, we will wean her off the med. If no seizures, it was a 1 time thing. If she has a seizure, it is epilepsy.
Picked up her med and a pill cutter and will start at dinner.
Also picked up a new bed for her crate, a new shampoo to wash her with (just finished her bath) and a new toy for both her and her dog brother. He was quite worried about her.
Appreciate the info from everyone!!

Sending you and your doggy best wishes. If it is epilepsy, that’s actually good news. Dogs with epilepsy can and do live long, happy lives.

I just posted a thread about this last week. My dog has had two now. The first one was a few months ago, and of course it happened on a Saturday when the vet has limited hours. The dog lost all control of his legs, was flopping around on the floor and pooped himself then flopped right into that. 😭 I called the vet and they said it could just be a one off and to just watch him over the rest of the weekend and if anything else happened to call the emergency vet ($$$) 🙄 because our vet is an hour away. He was fine the rest of the weekend so I didn’t worry about it too much.
Now last week he had one again, this time in the middle of the night. Our little dog started barking and I head some thumping downstairs but just thought the big dog was scratching at himself and thumping his foot on the floor. I didn’t realize what had happened until the next morning when I saw the poop smeared into the hallway grout at the bottom of the stairs, and the robot vacuum that had been accidentally turned on by the dog’s thrashing and then was decimated by running straight through the mess. 😭😭 We were supposed to have a vet appointment last Friday, but DH didn’t realize until we got to the vet that he made the appointment for the wrong vet clinic. Since there was no way we were going to make it there before the appointment time, he cancelled that one and made another appointment for this Friday so the dog still hasn’t been seen.
I decided not to give him the Heartgard and NexGuard that he normally would get on the first of the month after hearing something on the radio about not giving it to dogs with a history of seizures.

This my post on the topic from a thread last week. My previous Whippet had Epilepsy. He was on Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide which pretty much controlled the seizures, but he did have breakthrough seizures every few months. They were almost always at night and seemed to correlate with the lunar cycles. He had a pretty normal and happy dog life and lived until he was 12 years old.
There was a website I used to visit called Epilepsy Angels that had tons of helpful information. Not sure if it there anymore.

And they did do regular blood testing to see how his body is doing with it otherwise (I don't remember specifically what they tested for as he has been gone almost 10 years now)

My cattle dog had Epilepsy, and was on phenobarbital. Lived a long happy life with just a few break-through seizures while on meds. One thing you should consider during a seizure is to put a wet towel on your pup--one of the complications is that they can overheat because their panting reflex shuts down. Just check with your Vet if this is still recommended. May depend on the size of dog and your locations and time of year.
