We have a large cream-colored area rug that covers most of our living area. I knew I was taking a big risk with 2 labs - black and chocolate. I vacuum it every day and so far it has been fine. Until today....
Texas has had storm after storm and our yard is just saturated. My chocolate lab has found a muddy area and came back inside with mud all over her paws and walked ALLLLL over the cream rug. I used a carpet cleaning spray and wet rag and managed to get most of it up. Took me over an hour on my knees scrubbing.
Well, guess what? The kids let her out and she did it again! The mud is even worse this time!! I could cry. The kids helped me this time, but there are still dingy spots.
How would you recommend best cleaning it from here? It is on top of real hardwood floors so I am reluctant to use a steam cleaner that may saturate the rug. I am stuck just spot treating as necessary?

Have you tried Folex? I've had the best luck getting all manner of stains with it on my wool area rugs. About every 2 years or so I send them out to a professional rug cleaner.
How large is your rug? Could you move it outside and do a steam clean there?

you can call a rug cleaning company and they will come and clean them. I would make some rules about the dog and mud..or just live with a dingy rug.

I brought a badly stained rug in to a shop for professional cleaning. I could not believe it was the same rug when they were done.
It's a hassle, as the rug was large and heavy.

I second a carpet cleaning company. We have several they clean when we have our carpets done.

I put ours on the deck and used power washer on it. Of course, I made sure day was warm and sunny so it would dry in time to bring it in.

For spots, I put down a layer of baking soda rubbed it into the carpet, then poured water, white vinegar, and a few drops of Dawn scrubbed with a brush and covered it with a towel weighed down by books. I've also used Capture carpet cleaner.
For cheaper rugs, we hauled them to the patio and power washed them. The nicer rugs got professionally cleaned.
If you replace the rug eventually, splurge on a wool oriental. They're not as stylish, but you can't kill them. They don't wear, stain, or even show dirt. Signed, Mom of four kids with two dogs in a state with red clay.
