I see this all the time on Facebook. People post a question on a FB page and include a picture at the bottom of the post and say, "Picture for the algorithm (or tax), etc". Sometimes the pic has nothing to do with the question. If you want to include a cute picture of yourself, kids, or pets - just do so. Don't use this weird "algorithm" excuse. I am not sure what this even means.

My guess is that they think FB prioritizes posts with photos or it could be because posts with photos get more attention.

It is all part of the game to get views, or to not get views. A popular photo can cause the post to show up to more viewers, or it can also do the opposite because apparently the FB algorithm doesn’t like to show the same photo too many times on your feed.

In Facebook groups I think people sometimes do it so their post doesn't get lost, especially if it's a short one. People who might scroll quickly might go right by a short post, but if it has a photo of a cute dog/baby/beach/whatever that could cause them to slow down and read the actual post. I think they just use "algorithm/tax" to try to sound cool.

I think posts that have a photo do affect the algorithm compared to posts that only have text. Posts with photos get seen by more people, and people engage with those posts for more time. Facebook and other social media platforms track how long a viewer lingers on each post so they can serve up more of the same kinds of posts to you. That’s why after you look at an ad for something (whether you’re actually interested in the thing or not) you’ll start seeing more ads for those same kinds of things whether you actually click on the first ad or not.

So in a group where you are asking a question and looking for help, a photo with your post gets it seen by more people.
