Update 06/12 - Our tax preparer is trying to straighten the confusion over DH and BIL out. Hopefully, the other issue will work itself out. ( IRS Statement Today) Original:Since I couldn’t get through to the IRS today (kept waiting on hold for 15 minutes just to be disconnected!) and our tax preparer wasn’t in the office, I thought I’d crowd source this odd (I think) problem in hopes of easing my mind until I can fix this. In April, my husband and I filed married filing jointly. Our tax preparer submitted the taxes, and we paid what we owed online. Today, my brother-in-law got a letter addressed to BIL and me at his address saying we (me and BIL) haven’t paid. I’ve double and triple checked our return - the SSNs, addresses, etc. are all correct, and there is no connection to BIL. We looked at our online IRS accounts. Mine has the tax return and the transcripts listed with BIL but with the info that should have been filed for me and DH. DH’s account shows no tax return, but the payments include the money we paid. As a side note, I also paid DD’s taxes at the same time. She got the same letter today about her payment, but her account shows a balance and a pending payment. I feel confident that if we can ever get someone on the phone, we can get DD’s situation straightened out. With our situation though, Google is no help! Has anyone heard of anything like this?

Not your specific information but I got a letter because usually it’s my husband first and then me on the taxes. I did our taxes this past year and put my name first. While the payment cleared the bank, the IRS hadn’t processed it until speaking to me. Similar thing happened to a friend but they got a letter saying they owed 8k which is what they had paid. Same issue, there was a change of the names of the primary which flagged it and once they spoke to the iIRS the payment was processed. However, I have not seen a different persons name attached to a tax return that they should not be.

That’s interesting though, because it was our first time filing together, so it would be a “new” combo to the IRS.

I'm sure you will be able to get your error straightened out, but just wanted to comment saying that I have heard of many errors this year.
On was a misspelled name. They issued a refund check and the person took it to his bank and they cashed it. Kind of scary.
I know they hired a lot of employees this year, so maybe its a learning curve. But that doesn't help your worry about your issue. Good luck and hope it gets resolved quickly.

Are you any where near an IRS office? If so, I would print everything out and go early morning to join the line to speak directly to an agent face to face.
Fortunately we have an IRS office one town over. I think I was in line an hour before their opening time and was with an agent within 30 minutes. Well worth it for me!

Here is a link on how to reach a live person at the IRS: https://www.reddit.com/r/tax/comments/q7me61/how_to_reach_a_live_person_at_the_irs_it_works_i/
I did this about 5 months ago and it worked. The IRS agent was really nice and helpful.

Are you sure it's not a scam? If it's an actual IRS letter, just suffer through the hold line. We received a letter every single year on late filing for something like 7 years - no idea how we got on THAT list. Huge penalties, but luckily I always filed certified so called, sat on hold for an hour and faxed them my proof and they removed. Repeat, repeat. I'm pretty sure someone in the IRS decided to filter everyone who owes a substantial amount where penalties will be high and send the letter hoping people can't prove they paid on time. Honestly the worst part was the suggestion I didn't file on time - for a perpetually early person it was offensive.

Something seems to be happening with letters going out this year! My daughter also received a letter last week saying she filed with no payment. Yet - her amount due was paid the exact same time as filing. She tried to create her id me account to look at the transcript. But, has run into issues getting her identity verified. They’ve decided to make this process impossible to straighten out.

I don’t know if this applies to anyone here who got a letter but I did find this article link about letters people are receiving saying they didn’t pay.

I scoured everything yesterday looking for something like this. This is the same letter DD and BIL got, though the BIL's is much more concerning since it should have come to us! But I am glad it is not just DD who got the letter when the IRS account shows it has been received but not processed (though we did digital payments and the article thinks its just checks). I'll hold tight on her issue.

I don't remember taking pictures of IDs and then a selfie when I created mine, but DD and DH both had to do that yesterday.

I immediately went online to the IRS website to confirm what we were seeing in the letters. DD's would apply to that scenario, but this other issue is crazy! It did prompt us to all look at our online accounts which are showing us all messed up, too.
