Our 13 year old shih tzu Meeka (aka the fat puppy) has some health issues. Arthritis, bladder stones (recently but now resolved), enlarged heart and fatty bumps. Also signs of Cushing's disease but not a clear diagnosis so no meds.
Anyway I noticed yesterday she sounded funny. Heavier and faster breathing. And some coughing/gagging occasionally. Took her to the vet today and they ran all sorts of tests. Her heart is even more enlarged than it was in March. And she has a mass in her abdomen. She goes back in the morning for another echocardiogram (I think that's what it is). To see what's going on and if she can even have surgery for the mass. Then after that another specialist/tests for the mass. The vet said to do the testing and we'll go from there but we may be looking at a just keeping her comfortable kind of scenario.
I'm sitting here in shock. We got her from a rescue when she was two. Dh and I didn't even want a dog, dd did. And now we love our dogs like crazy. I've been crying on and off since leaving the vet's office.

I'm so sorry, it gets hard when they get older and we have to start making tough decisions about their health. It's hard to know exactly when to say when vs when to pursue treatment. I hope the echo gives you some better insight.

It’s rough to deal with health concerns in older pets

I understand completely. Losing a pet is so difficult. Give her lots of treats and snuggles and hope for the best!

We went through similar issues with our 15 yr old Maltese. She was diagnosed with Cushings and had just started treatment; a couple of days later a tumor was discovered on her liver. It was one of the worst things I've ever been through. We had her since she was 8 weeks old. Praying for your pup!

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I hope you all can get answers quickly and can discern the right path forward. It's a hard, hard thing when we love our animals, but so worth it.

I am so sorry. Our Annie had a similar diagnosis, but we opted no surgery since even with surgery, her heart wasnt strong enough. I hope you get more time with your baby.

I am so sorry. The heartache when finding out something like this. So sad. Love her, pamper her, treat her like a queen until you have to make the hardest decision or she ends up making it for you. I've had 2 cats that I loved so much. One passed away when we were out of the house and we came home to find him passed. My other one I ended up making the decision to put her out of her pain from cancer. It's so hard either way. Sending you thoughts and prayers for strength. Hugs.
