This says it all Trump's Supreme Court
Shannon Watts @shannonrwatts On the same day, Donald Trump’s Supreme Court made it easier to carry out a horrific mass shooting tragedy.
Dave Altimari @davealtimari The Newtown school system honored the 20 children who died at Sandy Hook by including their names aming the graduating class. Hard to believe how much time has passed since the massacre and all that was lost.

They were banned after one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history, at a Las Vegas concert in 2017. The Supreme Court on Friday struck down a ban on bump stocks, which enable semiautomatic rifles to fire at speeds rivaling those of machine guns, erasing one of the government’s rare firearm regulations to result from a mass shooting.
The decision, by a vote of 6 to 3, split along ideological lines. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, said that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had exceeded its power when it prohibited the device by issuing a rule that classified bump stocks as machine guns.

And their reasoning was stupid. Does it really matter whether the bump stock turns the gun into a machine gun? The effect is the same, rapid fire that creates mass casualties in a very brief time.
Naturally, Thomas wrote the majority opinion. How people who claim to believe in God and retribution for their actions on earth can allow a tool designed for mass killing is beyond me.

Another decision brought to us by the far-right billionaires who take Clarence Thomas on free vacations on their private jet.
I fail to understand their reasoning that a regulatory body doesn't have the right to regulate.

I always appreciate Jamie Raskin's opinion on legal issues deadly consequencesRep. Jamie Raskin @repraskin The MAGA-led Supreme Court just invalidated a lifesaving bump stock ban because extremist justices Thomas and Alito wave the NRA flag right-side-up and the American flag upside-down.
“Deadly consequences” to follow, as Justice Sotomayor says.

I fail to understand their reasoning that a regulatory body doesn't have the right to regulate. IMO, it's not reasoning, it's a trial balloon. They want to see if Congress will allow SCOTUS to treat them as irelevent.

It's also part of the conservative effort to shrink, diminish and weaken the federal government Regrettably, the the bump stock ruling is also consistent with their ruling 2 years ago limiting the power of the EPA to regulate carbon emissions and the decision a year ago to limit the power of the EPA to regulate wetlands and waterways. SCOTUS will most likely curtail the clean air act and the EPA again this year. Conservatives are using the courts, especially the Supreme Court, to impose their conservative agenda, knowing Congress wouldn't have been able to pass unpopular legislation including restricting abortion, limiting environmental regulations, undoing gun safety, gutting voting rights etc Regrettably, the conservative controlled court is only going to get worse before it gets better. Our best hope is that Biden replaces 2 justices in a second term (ideally Alito and Thomas) www.scotusblog.com/2024/02/supreme-court-likely-to-block-epa-ozone-regulation/www.politico.com/news/2024/01/17/supreme-court-biden-agenda-executive-policymaking-power-00135966www.americanprogress.org/article/the-supreme-courts-assault-on-government-could-make-the-far-rights-dreams-come-true/Stone steps lead up to the front of the U.S. Supreme Court building.Stone steps lead up to the front of the U.S. Supreme Court building, February 2024. (Getty/J. David Ake/) After two terms in which a radical majority on the Supreme Court has clawed back long-cherished rights, precedents, and laws, the court has now set its sights on grabbing power from voters and gutting the ability of the government to serve American families. It is hearing a series of cases that, individually, would undermine core functions and operations of the federal government and, together, would incapacitate governance. Ultimately, this would thwart the will of voters by grabbing power away from the elected branches of government and instead resting them with unelected judges with lifetime tenure. The outcome of these cases could potentially allow judges to substitute their own political and policy preferences for those of Congress; disempower career civil servants, who are experts in their fields; and hamper the president’s ability to implement their agenda. Effective governance has delivered bedrock promises—air free of smog; water free of contamination; a safe and reliable banking system; and even a 40-hour workweek. All could be at risk.

regulate women but not guns@jojofromjerz The far-right extremist majority on the Supreme Court believes lawmakers should be able to regulate women, but not guns.

Republicans Brandon Unger @ungerbn103 Republicans know that when you can't win at the Ballot Box, use the minority-ruled Court System to enforce massively-unpopular policies.
The Supreme Court is superior at this (no pun intended).

It's infuriating. We're all just sitting ducks waiting to be killed at a mass shooting. But Clarence got a free trip out of it, so he's happy.
