I have a four slot toaster and the only way to get a near perfect piece of toast is to use 2 slots or 4 slots. If I use just one or 3, the singleton always burns unless I remember to turn the dial down and even then it's not perfect. More often than not, I just want one piece and I find I need to watch the toaster like a hawk. If not, the bread gets far darker than I like (burnt to me, well-fired according to a bakery when I asked for paler rolls!) and I scrape the burnt bits off into the bin before buttering. My husband saw me doing this and was aghast, he would just throw the piece away and start again. I've always scraped, it was something we had to do to avoid waste as children. I don't mean bread that has been cremated but where it's significantly dark in places that it will taste bitter. Do you scrape or throw?
Maybe the answer is to buy an expensive toaster when this one gives up the toast ghost.

Hmmm…depends how much of it is too dark. A couple of corners? Scrape. Across the centre, generally more areas - throw it. If imm going to eat it I want to enjoy it and i won’t with the lingering burnt smell.

Corners maybe. But I have found that if it is burnt enough to scrape the taste permeates the toast even with scraping so I would prefer to redo with new. 😄
ETA - if someone could come up with a reasonably priced two and four slot basic toaster that actually worked as it should they would make a fortune. I have never had great luck with most toasters…they all have these little idiosyncrasies. But I don’t use one enough (IMO) for me to spend a lot on a toaster…so instead I just complain about it because mine stinks. 😆

I prefer most of my food to be on the ‘well done’ side, so my toast is pretty dark anyway. I would definitely scrape it if it got burnt and eat it no problem.

I rarely burn toast, but if I do, I usually scrape it as long as it's not the whole surface.
DSO cooked himself a pan fried toasted sandwich on the weekend. I don't know how he managed to do it, but he burnt one side to an absolute crisp. It was like charcoal, totally black. He didn't toss it, he didn't scrape it, he just ate it. The whole house stunk of burnt toast for hours. I wish I'd taken a photo to show you. It was ridiculous. The pan is ruined.

I have been known to scrape toast that’s a bit too toasty!!
This brings me a sweet memory of one of my grandfathers who liked very dark toast…my grandmother called it his burnt offerings.

But it is not cheap, and will not hold 4 slices. But it makes the absolute best toast ever. It comes with a measuring cup that holds 1 teaspoon of water which is added through a slot in the top of the toaster. The addition of the water add moisture to the toast, and the gauge for doneness allows for precise browning. Honestly, the best toast ever, and I can butter the bread before toasting. check it out.

DH burned a piece the other day and I encouraged him to throw it away. I seldom make toast but I want it very light so I'd rather do without than eat burnt bread.

I keep my toaster at pretty much the "barely toasted" setting, and as a result, burning anything in the toaster is virtually unheard of for me. Therefore I never face the scrape or throw dilemma. But given how I feel about the smell/flavor of charred toast (hence why I keep my toaster on the "mostly just warm" setting), I imagine that even if I scraped it, I'd still feel like I could taste that it was burnt, so I'd likely be a toast diva and throw it away.

I'm picky about toast and drive DH nuts because while our toaster has buttons and a dial and you can set to the perfect time (supposedly), I just watch it like a hawk and pop it up when it's to my liking. I will NOT scrape burnt toast nor will I eat it...I would rather skip the toast. I rarely eat toast anymore anyway so...and if I am using the toaster, it's usually a crumpet. AussieMeg - that sounds a LOT like dh's toasted sandwiches - he'll put them in the pan and then assemble all the other parts of his lunch or finish assembling the sandwich or both and since he always cooks on high (it's faster you know) he inevitably ends up with a very dark crispy sandwich which is why I almost always say no thank you when he offers to make me one too.

I discovered the other day that you can make a stonking toasted sandwich in the air fryer. I wish I didn't know as it's too easy. DSO tried making us one in the air fryer recently, but it was nowhere near as good (in our opinion) as frying it in a pan. It was way too dry for our liking. Mind you, it was much better than his toasted charcoal sandwich from the weekend! I put a couple of different cheeses in the sandwich, spread butter on the outside, then sprinkle parmesan on top of the butter, then fry it in more butter. Heart attack on a plate. Yum.

Reminds me of a post I read, not here, every time the husband pissed off his wife she would say nothing just adjust the toast setting before he made his breakfast.

Ds will take 2 pieces of toast and rub them against one another to get any burned bits off- we are talking minimally burned. If the whoke thing was burned, Id trash it

I chose other as it depends on how burnt the toast is. Just a bit, yes I scrap. If a lot, I will toss and re-toast a new slice.

I don't scrape, the taste of burnt is still there and I'd rather start again. I burnt my vegetable gyozas the other day, that was very disappointing

I can't remember the last time I made toast but I would never scrape. It still tastes burned so I'd turn down the settings and try again.

Nothing very exciting! Get the bread and filling ready as you would, air fry for 7 minutes, turn over and air fry for another 7. As I got rid of my sandwich toaster a while back, I've not had a toastie since then so this is my guilty pleasure. In fact, there is one cooking right now for a late lunch.

I usually toss it if it's badly burnt. My only exception would be if it was the last piece of that particular bread (usually raisin toast bread), then I will consider scraping it if it's not too burnt.

Didn’t have a choice growing up - Mum always burnt the toast - it was scraped if you were lucky 😂 My tolerance for burnt toast is probably higher than most 😜 - yes I scrape, hardly ever throw. Hubby always throws

For the first time ever, I voted Oprah. I don't mind burnt toast and will eat it as is. Except if I ever incinerated the bread like AussieMeg 's DSO. I would toss that. I can't believe the pan had to go too.

Depends on how badly burnt the piece is. Really black, I would pitch it into the dog pail. Hardly any, I would butter first, then maybe avoid the burnt edges. I may scrape if it is in between those guidelines.
If you are going to throw away a burnt slice and try to make another--that may not be perfect, either--I would just make two the first time.
Not much food gets totally wasted around here. The dogs get what we don't eat.

I can't remember the last time I burned toast... but scraping toast was a regular thing when I was a kid.
I guess it depends on the level of burned.
ETA: I guess I might have burned a grilled cheese sandwich or two. Now we have a sandwich toaster maker thing so I don't make grilled cheese in a frying pan anymore.

I haven't eaten toast in decades, but when I did, I just ate it pretty much however it turned out. It had to be pretty bad to scrape it, and I don't think I ever burned it so badly that it needed to be thrown out.
I don't mind the taste of burned toast actually.
