How do you choose your next book, that you want to read? Do you have a reading "system"? Do you follow a list? Do you read whatever you feel like, at that given moment? Read from best sellers list? Read only book club books? Etc.... ____________________________________
I use index cards, for my "to read" list. I list things, by one stand alone book on an index card or all the books in a series on an index card(s).
If I am reading a series, then the next book in the series is what I read next.
If I have stand alone ebooks on hold on the Library website, then I wait on starting a new series. I don't like switching back and forth, between stand alone books and series books.
If I like an Author, then I will try to read all their available ebooks, before moving onto another Author.
If I've read a series and a new book for that series comes out, then I move that book to the top of my "to read" list.
When I am about to start a stand alone book, I choose from one of the books that is saved on my Library account "for later" list. Based on availability.

no system .. random choices depending on what I have laying around or downloaded on my phone.. and I often go back and reread a book. I don't keep track of what I read either. I do have a short list on my phone if I need ideas.

Completely random based on my mood.

I've worked in libraries for the last 15ish years, so I have pretty good access to all the books I need!
I choose them in multiple ways ... I have favourite authors that I always read every new book from; I belong to a book club where we read on a theme and not the same book, so I get recommendations from there; I see books go across my desk and/or see reviews and think they look good; I definitely pick books by covers (and cozy mysteries by their punny titles!), whether I see them at the book store or at work; I go looking for 'classics' that I haven't read before and read those; if I need a book and don't have anything in mind, sometimes I ask a coworker to pick a letter of the alphabet and then I go to that section in the stacks and close my eyes and pick a random book by an author with a last name starting with the right letter!
I don't have a 'to read' list, I just read them as I come across them, and I rarely buy new books because I can borrow them for free--the only little pile of books that are a 'to read' kind of pile at my house are the paperbacks that I buy at used book sales to take with me on vacation and leave behind on airplanes and beside pools when I've finished them.
I have ADHD and usually have 4 or 5 books on the go at any given time--gotta match the book to my mood--and I'm a relatively fast reader, so I average 2 or 3 a week.

I'm all about the new releases...I like to read books that have very few reviews and I can make up my own mind and not be influenced. I actively stalk new release lists and add them to my Goodreads TBR list - there's currently 220 books on that, including 25 books that haven't been published yet. I don't read many reviews before I select a book, but I do look at GR ratings and numbers. If a book is rated over 4 stars and has been read by more than 10,000 people, then I'll often read it based on that alone. I track everything on GR, so I do look at what other people are reading and I also check out the lists they produce such as "top 10 books of the year so far" and if they sound interesting, I'll add them to my list as well. I have 120 audiobooks loaded onto my phone, and often pick one at random that I think will suit the mood I'm in. I also belong to a couple of libraries, so sometimes a book becoming available makes me read it next. If I like an Author, then I will try to read all their available ebooks, before moving onto another Author. I do the opposite of this, if I find a new author I like, I won't read another of their books for a while (unless it's a series). I don't want to get tired of their style too quickly, so I'll leave it for a few months to (hopefully) enjoy another of their books. However if it's an author I've read previously then I'll often read a new release straight away.

I’m totally random and pick whatever takes my fancy at the time. If I find a new to me author that I loved on the first read I will often get another of theirs to read straight away to “stay in the moment”. I will re-read some books, sometimes more than twice if I really enjoyed them, but not immediately after finishing. I couldn’t tell you when I last read a physical fiction book, I read them entirely on my Kindle or Kindle App on my phone and have far too many stored.

Sometimes it depends on which library holds are available. If it's the 1st in a series, then the next goes to the top of my list though.
Right now a book my DD suggested is next on my list.

I belong to two book groups so those selections are my priority. After that, I go to books I’d put on hold at Libby. I get recommendations here, on Reese or Oprah’s book club, or from friends.

I have no "system", I just read what I'm in the mood for and what I have out from the library. I always have so many of them that there's usually something I'm in the mood for, lol. If not then I can always find something else to download. This is one of the main reasons why I LOVE my Kindle...the ability to find a book to read at any time of the day or night, weekend, holidays, whatever.
I also belong to an online book group and every month the organizers divide us up into two teams (based on how many books we read the previous month, so each team is more or less equal). We have a list of 15 prompts and we get points for our team as we log books for those prompts. It's always pretty easy to fit random books into many of the prompts, but sometimes toward the end of the month I'll look at what prompts I have left and intentionally search for a book that fits that prompt. But mostly I don't do that, I just fit in whatever I'm reading.

I read randomly. I specifically DON'T tend to read series books one after the other, as often I get tired of the similarity in style and just need something different. I volunteer for a group that does a large English language second hand book sale twice a year - I live in Germany; English books ae not easy to come by in regular bookshops - and pick up a lot of books cheap through that. I also keep a separate wishlist on Amazon of kindle books I want to read, as well as the many books I already have downloaded to my Kindle. When I finish a book, I just scroll through my kindle library or check out my bookshelf, and decide what looks good and suits my mood and my plans. I will often have a fiction and a non-fiction book on the go at the same time - fiction usually on the kindle and nonfiction as a 'real' book.

I do choose some books based on recommendations or reading about them online.
But when I'm not looking for a specific book, I go with a "somewhat related" system. And that means that my next book has some small element in common with the last book, or inspired by the last book.
So, in January, I started off with a book comprised of short stories by several authors, all having to do with the new year. For my next book, I chose a full length book by one of those authors. That author's book was set in Ireland, which I enjoyed, so I chose another book set in Ireland for my next book. That book had to do with difficult family relationships, so I chose another book that dealt with families for my next book.
Sometimes the common factor is far more broad---I read a few books in a row that sere set outside of my home country (the US), but noticed that they were all set in either the UK, Italy, or France, so I specifically chose a book set on a different continent after that. Still a country other than my own, but specifically from a different spot in the world. That book was set in South Africa, which led me to Trevor Noah's book, also set in South Africa. From there, I simply chose another biographical book. I might have chosen another book written by a man at that point, or I could have jumped to a new continent. But there's always some little tie in from one book to another when I'm choosing without any recommendation. Could be a genre, a time period, something specific about the author, etc.

I have a running list in notes on my phone. This is for several reasons. First, I can send it to dh if he ever needs to know what to get me. Second, when I’m shopping for a book, I can check it off. I also have a good reads account. I mark books there. Anytime I see a book here, a suggestion from a friend or a review in IG/TT, I mark it.
As for what I read, it’s whatever mood I’m in. I read a lot of thrillers. But I also like light reads as well. So I’ll read several thrillers in a row and then need something more fluffy.
I want to make that books read Christmas ornament this year. So I have started marking books on Good Reads as I reading them and completed. So I can see which ones I actually read this year.

Just totally random, I scroll through my Kindle library and choose one.
I love weird, gruesome stories if anyone has any recommendations.

Gosh that's quite some system OP I open my kindle, go to my library, remind myself of the subject of a few recent downloads and pick one.

That sounds rather rigid.
I read whatever strikes my fancy, and I often have more than one going at once depending on my mood.
I like light fluff for falling asleep, though those get boring after awhile and I'll need a good mystery or murder. Then I'll need a romance to recover. Then some historical fiction. Then something contemporary. Then probably some YA nonsense with vampires or fairies or something. Repeat.
I buy most books I read according to the Kindle daily deals, and lately I've had a real winning streak though sometimes you get utter crap that way. I rarely get them through the library because my library system sucks and I also don't like the wait-list.

I’m a mood reader and read whatever sounds good at the moment. I track books I want to read on goodreads but don’t follow any list. If a new author has a book out, I do try and read it, if it comes available on Libby. Also, if I just read a thriller, chances are I’ll find a different genre for my next book. I like to read all different genres so that way I don’t feel like I’m reading the same book genre over and over.

I usually have 3-4 books going at a time - one 'real' book, a book on my kindle, a library book on Libby, and sometimes an audio book as well.
I choose differently for each of those.
I'm doing a couple of book challenges so the books I didn't already own, I put on hold on Libby - I read those as they come in. When I hear about a book I want to read, I typically put that on hold on Libby also - if it a new book, sometimes it's not yet on Libby so I tag it notify me.
I have a few series that I'm reading - mostly in 'real' book form but I'm using Libby for the books I'm missing and there are two series that I'm reading strictly on Libby and I put the next book on hold as I finish the previous - there's always a long wait for them.
Kindle - I tend to read randomly from there - almost all of the books were free downloads
my home library - if I'm not reading a challenge or series book, atm, I'm trying to choose books that I think will be a once and done so I can pass them along as I finish.
Right now I'm reading Dune (borrowed hardcover) for a challenge. I'm between Kindle books and need to charge the Kindle. I have The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on Libby as an audiobook -also for a challenge. I'm currently reading Carnegie's Maid on Libby but I may end up DNF that one if it doesn't get more interesting soon as The Overstory and Feed both just came off my hold list (both challenge books)

I have yearly reading goals, including one with prompts. At the beginning of the month I look at my goals, pick books that would cross some of those off (one this year is to read book #2. #3, #4... in a series) and make a stack. Throughout the month when I finish a book, I pick something new from the pile. If I don't get to something it stays on the pile for the next month.
Every once in a while either due to library books needing to go back, or not choosing to read a book several months in a row I wipe the entire pile and start over.
I also listen to audiobooks although those usually mood reads and depend on what the library has available when I need a new audiobook.
It works for me...

I read whatever Libby tells me to. Ha!! I have a bunch of books on hold and I generally read them as they become available. When I get backed up, I'll delay delivery for a couple of weeks. I tend to read thrillers/mysteries. That gets dark after a while and I'll switch it up with something lighter to shake it up.
I only really got back into reading about 4-5 years ago so there are ton of new to me authors. So it's easy to find something that I'll likely enjoy with plenty of options to mix it up to avoid getting bored of a particular style, locale, etc.

I get some recommendations from the reading thread on here or I pick books from my Kindle Unlimited account in the genre I like which is mysteries and thrillers. I've found I've been buying more books lately and need to rely more on Kindle Unlimited since I'm paying for that.

I tend to read my BOTM picks first, then I move on to purchased books usually by my favorite Authors. If I get books from the Library I will read those right away and return I don't like holding onto books that are borrowed.

I have a Google sheet that has all of the books I want to read (and let's be real, unless I get cracking, I'm going to need to live to 108 to finish them)... I usually just pick random ones and see if the library near us has them (the sheet also shows the books' call numbers and locations that have it - I realize this makes me sound crazy). I also have those available via audiobook highlighted.
I am #1 in the queue for a few books, so I'm waiting for those to come in. I just wish I could read and cross-stitch at the same time. The dream.

Generally random. I keep a library list thru the website and apps I use. If something isn't available, I will keep it on my Notes app in phone. I keep a google doc of books I've read so I don't repeat!

If I like a series, I read all of the series.
I give Pulitzer Prize winners a chance. Once I tried to read all of those. Another year I read as many books written by black authors as I could to broaden my viewpoints. I read the Newbery winner each year. I browse our library's display of new books.

I’m a longtime public librarian (Head Cataloger/Reference Librarian) who develops our whole adult nonfiction collection, so I’m constantly reading reviews and adding titles to my carts for purchase. Probably because of that, I read mostly nonfiction, whatever catches my interest in the moment. I tend to put holds on things as I’m reading reviews and placing orders. I do read an occasional novel but not too often, usually recommendations from friends or coworkers. The whole library staff contributes to an ongoing “staff picks” display so I always have instant recommendations right in front of me! ☺️
Needless to say, I never run out of things to read and my TBR pile is always taller than I am 😆

Mostly pick books that I think sound like something I want to read at that moment. I'm also part of a book club and try to read the next month's pick before the current month (so I just finished the July book and we meet this week to discuss the June pick). I get about 95% of the books from the library and probably every two weeks request 3-4 books from my Goodreads "To Read" list alternating between things that I added to the list awhile ago and brand new things. Then when it's time to read I usually pick whatever sounds good unless the book doesn't have renewals in that case it goes to the top of the pile (on another note, I share books with my oldest and will save books for her to read if I think it's any good). I find my books by the weekly topic on here, a couple FB reading groups, and sometimes just going to the bookstore to browse.
