This is a great question. Thanks to the OP!
Every week, the library releases a list of "new and upcoming books." I go through that list and put any books that interest me on hold. First, I scan the list for new books from my fave authors and put those on hold. Then I read the descriptions of the other books and put any that interest me on hold as well.
If there is a wait list for the book, I read it right away. Yesterday, in the weekly reading thread, I mentioned that I checked out Southern Man. But there is a long wait list for it, and the book is nearly 1000 pages. Since I have a very tall stack of books checked out right now and have to pick up at least five more from the library today, I won't have time to read it. So I'll return it and check it out again in two or three months when the wait list goes down.
Sometimes I buy used books, mostly from Thriftbooks. I do this with my favorite authors, like T. Greenwood. (She wrote Rust & Stardust, and I've loved nearly all her books.) And once in a great while, I buy new books too. But I end up reading any books I buy last with very few exceptions.
I also have a very long TBR list on Goodreads.

I do all my reading on my Kindle Paperwhite. I pick my books based on any new releases that are out or a good recommendation from the weekly reading thread ! If it’s a slow time for new releases, I will check my lists for older books from my authors or recommendations that I never got around to reading. I bounce around from mysteries, thrillers, some horror/ghosts and family sagas.
I keep various “NOTES/LISTS” on my phone :
* I follow approximately 140 authors and currently have 60 books that are not released yet and are on my TBR LIST.
* Another list has books I’m waiting for sales/freebies; about 80 books.
* My newest Kindle Paperwhite has 110 books from authors I follow whose older books went on sale or new recommendations for books that went on sale which are all listed on another NOTE.
* Another Kindle holds 50 freebies if I get really desperate (don’t think that’s ever going to happen!); again another list.
I put all my reviews on Goodreads, Amazon and, of course, on the weekly reading thread.
I think I love searching/researching books just as much as reading them!
Hope EVERYONE reads at least one 5-star book this summer ! HAPPY READING !

I subscribe to Wowbrary. Weekly, I am sent a list of newly added library books. From that list, I’ll place the book on hold or add to my wish list. As books become available, I’ll check them out or defer for a couple of weeks. I try to force myself to read one nonfiction book for three fiction books. I’m not picky. If I’ve read all of my available holds, I’ll go into my wishlist and pick the first available.

I love this thread! I always have one novel, one nonfiction book and one audiobook going at one time. I switch between library books and e books. I am definitely a person with eyes too big for my book stomach. My want to read list is stupid long. My only goal I try to hit is 10 books a month. So if it’s getting to the end of the month I will lean towards shorter books. The only reason I have this goal is to nudge me away from wasting time on social media. It’s so east to lose myself on various sites and lose valuable reading time.

Recommendations from friends or top sellers that I see for sale at Hudson News in the airport. I download them on my Kindle when traveling. I do most of my reading when traveling.

I go through the Amazon New Release List. But ultimately I always pick the one with the cover I like.

Random based on my mood. I track all my reads on Goodreads and have wish lists on Audible and Everand. I get ideas from goodreads and from the reading threads here. I read a wide variety of genres and like to mix it up - going from zombies to romance to thrillers to historical fiction. I also have holds on audio books from various libraries and will pause what I'm reading/listening to when one of those become available.

I tag ebooks in my state online lending library with 'want to read'.
I do a search for books or audio books that are available now with my tag of 'want to read'.
It works for me because I don't care if I'm reading the latest releases. I just finished A Man Called Ove and I'm currently listening to an audiobook that was released in 2003.
ETA: I do need to remember the books I've ACTUALLY bought on my Kindle. Then there are all the library sale books.

I share a Kindle account with my in-laws, because my FIL and I love the same authors. My reading list is based on whatever book my FIL has recently bought! Then once in a while I will add an Amazon gift card to his account, so he can buy us some more books. I don't do that nearly often enough, hence my device is called Megan the Freeloader on their account!

Honestly it’s usually whatever comes available on my library holds list. Anytime I see a book I want to read it put a hold on it at the library so I have a constant stream of books. Sometimes when the wait is long I can’t even remember where I got the book suggestion from!
