I used to work with a guy who pushed for the change to Florida's laws about motorcyclists being required to wear helmets. Instead of being mandatory, it was changed to optional if the motorcyclist carried $10,000 worth of insurance, which, as we all know, will barely get you in the ER door. I asked the guy about it, and he said, "let those who ride decide." (He was big on personal freedom/less government intrusion.) Let those who ride decide? "Keep the guv'mint outta my business," until the rest of us have to pay for their long-term care. They're obnoxious, riding very recklessly. We call them "organ donors" around here. After doing research, it appears some people pushed for the change because they would rather die in a motorcycle accident than run the risk that the helmet would injure their neck, causing paralysis below the injury. They can find any excuse not to wear a helmet. Statistically, what is more likely? They just like the wind in their hair. I don't know how you kept your mouth shut.

mich5481The trouble with that is that if you are involved even, if not at fault, it will cost you/your insurance. I have always thought that if a motorcycle rider/passenger does not wear an approved helmet, their head injury is on them. Florida has no fault insurance, so I'm not sure what role that would play. NJ has no fault ins, but what that means is you are initially covered by your own ins so you can get immediate care. Nothing stopping victims from filing law suits for injuries etc. You would have to cover what your insurance co paid for your care of you won a suit. Or they also can go against the other guy,'s ins for payments. That can all go against you too..

I wear a helmet too. And I silently judge people who don't. I have seen too many people crack helmets before. Remember when Fox mocked President Biden for wearing a stupid hat when he was on his bike? Everytime I ride I think about that as I put my helmet on. I am of the mindset that if Fox news thinks something is stupid it is probably something smart to do. When I first saw that picture of GR I thought he was wearing a purple shirt under his other shirt.

I don’t ride a bike but I do ride a horse. No way would I ride any equine without a helmet. And anyone who rides my horse wears a helmet. I slipped off the mounting platform 6 weeks ago. Ambulance ride to the hospital. No broken bones but a hamstring tear and contusions. I didn’t hit my head but the helmet was tossed. Fortunately I had bought a new one a week before. Just finished 4 weeks of PT and have 4 more weeks.

I used to ride regularly. To get to the bike trail, I had to ride through my neighborhood. Drivers don't see people on bikes. Hell, drivers sometimes don't see me in my damn car! No amount of wind blowing through my hair is worth a brain injury.
I once had a spectacular crash because I didn't unclip my shoes quick enough at a stop. Fell over and tried to impale myself on the end of my handlebar. Hit the end with my sternum. Thank god it didn't stop my heart, because I was about ten miles in the middle of a trail. Had to ride back to my car. Funny enough, most of the black bruises I got were all the underside of my breasts. It was a good nine months before it didn't hurt to roll over in bed. Bike crashes are no joke.

That looks like my husbands bruise when he was hit by a van on his motorcycle! Poor Gordan, it must be so painful. Good thing he had his helmet on.

My DD was fortunate to be wearing a helmet when she wiped out going down a hill on rollerblades. Roadrash on the backs of her thighs and a crack in her helmet. She always wears a helmet while biking. I haven’t ridden a bike in years.
