Gordon Ramsey had a bad accident when out riding his bike. He made this video to stress the importance of wearing a helmet, no matter how far you plan to ride. He lifted his shirt to show a bruise he has from the impact and it is awful. He says the accident really shook him. I don’t know how long after the accident occurred that he made this video, but I noticed his hand was shaking quite a bit as he talked. I never ride my bike without my helmet. Do you wear one? www.cnn.com/2024/06/17/entertainment/video/gordon-ramsay-massive-bruise-bike-incident-digvid

Yes, I saw that. Isn't it insane? I also noticed his hand, which he often moves like that but not usually so fast, IMO. I'm glad he's trying to use this for a good purpose - if it helps even one person, good.
I do not particularly ride a bike, but when I have, I always wore one. (I mean, not when I was a kid in the 70s because I don't think anyone had even heard of them - but in HS and as an adult, yes.) My daughter is training as an EMT, and in her words, always ALWAYS wear one, and if you ride a motorcycle, always ALWAYS wear a helmet and long pants and a protective jacket and gloves. Always.

I knew from your thread title you were going to be talking about Gordon Ramsay.
It is one hell of a bruise. He was very lucky.

We had been riding our bikes at the beach on vacation without helments for a few years when one of my coworkers had a nephew who was in a bad accident. He was just a kid out riding in his neighborhood, took a spill and had to have brain surgery. He recovered thankfully. But we never rode without a helmet again.

I haven't ridden a bike in the last 20 years other than a couple months ago on Jekyll Island. I did not expect to be riding a bike and I don't own a helmet. But if I was going to do it regularly, I would definitely get one. There is too much traffic, both foot traffic in the parks and vehicle traffic on the roads, for me to consider that fun exercise.
PS it turns out, it really IS just like riding a bike! I was riding all over like I had never taken a break. I also went ice skating a few years ago, first time since childhood, and that wasn't quite the same. I had to re-learn everything. But I didn't fall and my hips are still intact 😁

I haven’t ridden a bike in years. When I did, we didn’t wear helmets. If I was to start riding now, I wou ld wear a helmet. Did you see the condition of Ramsey’s helmet? Good thing he was wearing it!

I don't get on a bike without a helmet. Period. And I think anyone who doesn't wear one is an idiot. Why would you not protect your BRAIN? I know too many people who would've been seriously injured or killed if they had not been wearing a helmet. I'm gonna protect my noggin as best I can.

When I VERY SELDOM ride at the lake on the path, I don't wear a helmet. I don't have one. I need to get one.

I haven't ridden a bike in years but yes I always wore a helmet. (well, not when I was a kid, because as someone else said, no one had them back then). So did dh, and both kids. The summer before ds started 5th grade he was riding his bike in our neighborhood, he skidded on something, crashed, and smashed his head. His helmet was completely cracked inside, the spider web type of cracking. And the outer shell was broken into a few pieces. Turns out the spiderweb cracking is just what they're supposed to do. Without the helmet that would have been his brain. The police officer who was ds's school's resource officer actually asked us if he could keep the helmet to use as a visual aid when he did bike safety classes. Ds started 5th grade with a cast on his right wrist (yes he's right-handed), and one of his friends started 5th grade that same year with a cast on his left arm (yes he was left-handed). We called them bookends. haha oy. Neither kid could write since it was their dominant hand, and this was back in the days before devices and computers. Fun times. Not.

Always. Getting DH to wear one was the bigger challenge since we grew up in the 80s, man! (Said in my best Bandit impression.)
What really kills me is the people who don't wear helmets on their motorcycles.. it's an option here and completely ridiculous. When I was in HS, my boyfriend's parents used to ride their Harley's with a buddy of theirs. If we went out to dinner, he would be there sometimes. He also had a daughter the same age as me. He went on a ride one day without his helmet (typical) and didn't make it home. I'll never forget the grief of his friends, all because he couldn't be bothered.

My ex fiancé is a cyclist and he took a really bad fall during a race several years ago. He has no memory of what came before the fall, what actually caused it, and anything that happened once he was down. His only memory is opening his eyes for a couple of minutes as they were loading him into the ambulance. He saw his wife standing there and taking pictures of him. He doesn’t remember anything else until he was waking up from surgery. He said that seeing her standing and taking pictures really upset him and stayed with him. Whenever someone mentions his accident, he immediately pictures his wife snapping away. I guess she didn’t speak to him, at least that he can recall.
When the dust settled, he learned he had multiple injuries from major bruising, torn ligaments, broken bones, and a broken neck. The neck took the longest to heal and he wore a stabilizing device that went over his shoulders and strapped to his chest. The head portion was a full halo with pins all around, anchored into his scull to support his head and prohibit his neck from any movement. When I started dating him, he got the halo out to show it to me. This was a man that was very much a minimalist that didn’t have much of anything in his apartment other than necessities, but he kept the halo. He said it was to remind himself how close he came to losing his life that day. The doctors told him that his helmet is the thing that made the difference between life and death for him. Every time he opened his clothes closet he saw the halo. He said it made him want to live more purposefully and to not waste the second chance he was given.

Always, as do dh and ds. Dh and ds do some crazy mountain biking and wouldn't dream of riding without a helmet. I'm a kind of mountain biker and there is no way I'd risk riding with no helmet. We have seen some massive accidents, that would have like resulted in death were it not for a helmet.

Oh wow, that bruise is horrendous!!
It is law to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle here in Australia. Well, In my state, anyway (which is often referred to as "the nanny state"). I think it's the same in most states.

Some people whinge about it but most just accept it like seatbelt laws, it is there to protect people.

He went on a ride one day without his helmet (typical) and didn't make it home. I'll never forget the grief of his friends, all because he couldn't be bothered. I used to work with a guy who pushed for the change to Florida's laws about motorcyclists being required to wear helmets. Instead of being mandatory, it was changed to optional if the motorcyclist carried $10,000 worth of insurance, which, as we all know, will barely get you in the ER door. I asked the guy about it, and he said, "let those who ride decide." (He was big on personal freedom/less government intrusion.) After doing research, it appears some people pushed for the change because they would rather die in a motorcycle accident than run the risk that the helmet would injure their neck, causing paralysis below the injury. The really ironic part was this guy was a motorcyclist who would change into padded overalls with a padded jacket that contained an airbag, a helmet, and gloves before riding his motorcycle home from work. I have no idea if it is still optional in Florida for motorcyclists to not wear helmets.

My husband hit a deer going 40 mph on a downhill stretch. His helmet saved him. Concussion and road rash.
He rode that bike 3 miles home. Confused determination. He also thought he was going to be late to work, while I am trying to force him into the car to take him to the hospital. Found out later, he called the guy about work 4 times. The fourth was that he had had a bike accident and was on the way to the hospital. He didn’t remember calling him. I kept him from any further calls.
So, yes, we wear helmets.

No helmets when I was a kid, in fact no seatbelts then either! Just before our graduation from 9th grade a classmate for whatever reason went over the handles bars of her bike. She was found dead on the road.
I think helmets for bicycles are required up to 14 years here now. They are required for all motorcycles.

That bruise is awful, but what got me was the shaking of his left hand. Hopefully he’s taking a lot of time to rest and thankful he didn’t break anything. But I wonder what he hit because that’s a horrible bruise.

Yikes! That's awful!
As for helmets, yes we wear them, BUT, I've always been a "never say never" kind of person, and my DH just proved this recently.
He has been taking his bike to work for years--well over a decade--almost two, actually. And he wears his helmet every day.
But one day just last week, he called home before he left work because he couldn't find his helmet. He wanted to know if he had somehow left it at home. And he did! There had been a last minute problem at the house right before he left that morning, and he had all of his cycling stuff together, started packing it/putting it on, got distracted by the problem, took the helmet off and set it down away from everything else, then later rode off without it.
It was such a crazy thing for him to do! He had never rode his bike (as an adult, anyway) without it before. But it just goes to show you that when you mix a change in routine (his helmet wasn't with is other cycling gear like usual), with stress (fixing the issue and then running late), your brain doesn't always catch up and give you your regular mental to-do list.

My son was 7 and hit a parked car on his bike. He went over the handle bars and cracked his helmet. I'm so relieved I won out over the whining about making my kids wear helmets, even from DH.

I used to nanny for a pediatric neurologist. She had a "no helmet, no wheels, no exception" rule for her kids. Didn't matter if it was a bike, scooter, etc they had to wear a helmet. I use the same rule with my family.

Ouch. I saw that picture when scrolling the other day but didn’t see who it was or the story involved. I hope he brings awareness about wearing a helmet.
Years ago I worked with a man that rode a bike to work and always wore a helmet. He told me a story of a friend if his. He rode with this other man on the weekends and one day they were just talking and the other man took off his helmet and just rode across the street and somehow fell and hit the curb wrong and hit his head just wrong. He had a really bad brain injury. My coworker said it’s just not worth it to not wear one. The injured man was an experienced rider. This wasn’t even a traffic accident.
I see how people drive and I wouldn’t want to risk riding a motorcycle. There are fatalities often enough to know it’s a risk.

If a child is required to wear a helmet the first time on any bike, maybe even Big Wheel, and the parents also wear helmets, they would be trained to wear a helmet. No different then no seatbelt no ride from day one in a car seat.
My first car that had seatbelts was a used 1966 Chevy. I have worn a seatbelt since then.

mich5481The trouble with that is that if you are involved even, if not at fault, it will cost you/your insurance. I have always thought that if a motorcycle rider/passenger does not wear an approved helmet, their head injury is on them.

I always wear a helmet, even when just riding in my little subdivision, and always made my kids wear a helmet on bike or scooter. Now that they are parents, they totally get it and insist their kids wear helmets.

I had a bike accident 2 years ago and my bruise was similar although unfortunately covered even more of my body than his.
We are a biking family and we always wear helmets. (At least we adults do. Unfortunately, my daughter does not wear one at college and nothing we say/remind her changes her decision. And there have been several bike accident fatalities at her school since she started.) Those of you who have been around a long time will remember that my son had a serious head injury as a result of a bike accident and the helmet saved his life. My husband had a bad high speed bike crash a few weeks ago. His helmet cracked in two but he suffered only a mild concussion and whiplash. We had already been talking about upgrading our helmets before his accident because there is a lot of great new technology out there.

I saw that and it was so horrible looking. I don’t understand parents who ride bikes with kids and the kids have helmets and parents. I see it all the time and it’s just crazy that people do that. I see riding a bike just as driving in a car, where a helmet, wear a seat belt equals the same thing.

It wasn’t a thing when I was a kid in the 70’s-80’s, but now we all do. My brother was in a horrific bike accident a few years back. I doubt very much he was wearing a helmet because his whole face was smashed in requiring hospitalization and reconstructive surgery. 😳😲 The whole thing was expensive and quite scary.
