I might not be getting the point. I just think that there should be no room for guilt in our lives over the things we like or love doing. Life can be hard, complicated, wonderful etc...and any enjoyment we get from hobbies should enhance our lives. Not turn into guilt or shame. Thank you! This is the right sentiment. This is the thought I need to hold onto. I do understand anxiety over maybe having too much. I think part of my frustration too is that I have multiple projects going at one time. So it seems sometimes like I just keep starting things and never finishing. (I do finish things, but it doesn't feel linear, if that makes sense.) Its funny how we can understand each other and even feel the same way about things. But I need to have more then 1 crochet project going. I get bored or distracted easily (not with crocheting, but doing the same stitch pattern over and over), and I like to put something down and pick up the other one to do something different. But I understand too the need to finish something (believe me!!).

I should also add - one of our old LSS customers made herself a shirt that said "she who dies with the most supplies wins" and I've kinda stuck to that motto! I need this shirt!!!

so it’s not one project at a time, it’s one per craft - a big difference This is actually a really nice plan. I should really try it. So I’ve found that my stash is going down very slowly because I often find it doesn’t have what I need. Which, in itself shows how silly I was to buy stuff just because I liked the look of it! This made me smile. It's true for me too.

I love my stash of scrapbook supplies and will probably always have it. I'm not to worried about it as I have dived in again and enjoying it (in a different way, junk journaling). I do purge time to time to keep it under control. It is what it is. I love having my 'stuff' and not going to worry about it. Just enjoy.

I do feel guilty sometimes because I have a huge cross stitch pattern and fabric collection, and I still have a lot of scrapbooking stuff even though I don't really scrapbook anymore. I like the thought process it being a 'collection' though, because I know some of the patterns I have I will never stitch but I love them and just HAD to HAVE them.
I don't buy books anymore since I signed up for Kindle Unlimited on Amazon. Since I read trashy romance novels it's worth the $10/month (considering the price of paperback books now!)
I also view a lot of my stash as my "retirement stash" because once I retire I will not be able to afford to buy all this stuff, so I will get to use what I have.

I have lots of craft stuff… beads (all in a rolling tool box), fabric (all on mini bolts on shelves or in milk crates), laser stuff (mostly at school since it belongs to the school but it’s in 4 bins), sizzix (all in drawers or in the cabinet neat and tidy), silhouette (lives on a cart with the heat press and vinyl neatly stored in art bins), Cricut (lives in my classroom with a heatpress and vinyl in art bins and a few plastic totes), scrapbook paper (in hanging files if it’s 8.5x11 and in art bins if it’s 12x12), candle making stuff (in a dresser drawer in the office), clear stamps (all in a binder- I never use them- only collect), lip balm supplies (in a box on the craft room dresser), lunches (in a metal lunch box on the shelf), camera DSLR (in a metal lunch box on the shelf), cross stitch stuff (in a bin in a cabinet in the office somewhere), random stuff that I thought would be fun to personalize (anywhere I could stash it). what else? lol
DH and I share an office/craft space. I can’t even craft in there because I have too much stuff. Yes it’s organized but there’s a lot of stuff. I have friends ask if I have XYZ and I usually do and gladly give it to them to use. I will never use all that I have! Thankfully I haven’t been shopping for stuff other than what I need right now if I don’t have it. I’ve never gotten into yarn crafts.
eta: acrylic paints (in an art bin), alcohol inks (cigar box)- just used both of those yesterday on a laser project I did.

I think part of my issue is that I live 45 min from the closest craft store and I dropped my Amazon prime (with prime delivery was 4-7 days!) so I like having supplies readily available when I need them. I have all of the fabrics for DS’s temperature quilt washed, pressed, in a box ready to be made into a quilt. Just need to find the motivation. I told myself it would be done before he turns 10 (3/2026) so I have time. Same timeframe I did for DD’s.

I have gotten very spartan about acquiring new supplies and I have cancelled almost all of my subs (I have one cross-stitch sub left). I also destashed a ton of scrapbooking supplies this winter after a leak and my oldest is a crafter and can take anything they want. I still have too much but am trying!

I like having options, so I prefer to have more than I can possibly use. I'm not very sentimental, so don't usually have issues removing something from my stash if it's no longer wanted. I try to stay confined to whatever space I have designated for hobbies.
The way I have my supplies organized allows me to see most of it when I craft, so I have a pretty good idea where things are and what I have. I like getting new things regularly, since I'm always seeing the same supplies when I craft - I want my eyes to have new things to come across so I don't get bored looking at the same things each time.

Yes, I get overwhelmed and I do destash. For instance, I recently went through all my acrylic paints. I had so many from so many different brands. I decided to keep only the brand I truly like and I donated the rest. I got rid of all my yarn since I haven't knitted in years. I gave them to my aunt who teaches at a senior center. I did keep all my needles though. I don't know why, I should probably donate those too. I got rid of half of my fabric stash, still probably holding on to too much. I still have a lot of scrapbooking stuff, even though I haven't scrapped in years, because I have unfinished projects. I keep telling myself that when I retire, I'll finish those projects then get rid of the scrapbooking stuff. I am only scrapping older, physical photos. The digital photos I get printed into a book like from Shutterfly.
I am an out of sight, out of mind kind of girl. If I can't see the stuff, as in they are all stacked in bins in a closet, I forget about them. Yet, I have too much to put out on shelves in my craft room. Having a lot of things in "storage" makes me a bit anxious. It is one reason I don't buy food in bulk. I guess I have some "minimalist" gene in me. It gives me incentive to destash. I like to see what I have. I like seeing all my markers and colored pencils on the shelf.
I am starting to think about how many years of productive arts and craft time I do have. I am thinking about what do I really *love* to do, and what I want to do when I retire. I am one of those that likes to explores all different crafts and buy all the stuff you need for that craft, so I need to focus. I also suffer from "must have the entire set." I remember buying all the distress ink pads, and then never using them.
This is a little bit of a ramble. It is where I am at with all my stuff, and the next stage in my life. I don't want to keep stuff I won't probably use but then I don't know what the future holds.

with other things in my life that cause me to shut down and sometimes lose my "stitchy bug" for a short while. Maybe this is why this is hitting me hard today. I've had a big disturbance this past week that was so very upsetting after a relatively consistent period of calm. So I feel like all I've done is scroll the internet the past week and it feels like yuck. So that could be why this feeling was so intense this morning. Scrolling the internet is my go-to when my brain won't allow me to focus, so I'd say that's a definite possibility. Jen

I am definitely a scrapbook SABLE. But I have room for my stash in the basement, and most of it is more or less organized, so when I retire next year, I’ll be ready to hit the ground running with the thousands of pictures I have printed over the last 12 years ( with quite a few that are still unprinted in the cloud). My current obsession is baking and candy-making. I am practicing for the possible wedding-cookie-table that might be in my daughter’s future—we’ll see what happens this fall. Anyway, I keep buying cookie and candy molds and other baking/decorating tools as I find new ways to decorate cookies and cupcakes. It’s actually quite fun, but every once in a while I go down the baking supplies rabbit hole and emerge with new items in my Amazon shopping cart. If you aren’t familiar with the Pittsburgh wedding cookie table tradition, this feature from The Today Show gives a lot of background. www.today.com/video/how-the-sweet-tradition-of-the-cookie-table-at-weddings-got-started-204192325757The Facebook group has lead me to so many baking supplies—ladylock forms, various specialized cookie cutters, silicone forms for beautiful buckeye candy, silicone baking mats for macarons, cake decorating tips, etc. I have had a blast trying some of the recipes and techniques for my Christmas cookies!

Hello. My name is Dee and I am a SABLE charter member No guilt, though. My goal has never been to use stuff up. I have all this stuff “just in case” and “what if.” I am a long way from a store, and shipments take forever to get here. When I scrapbook or make cards, I need options to motivate me. Think of me as Scrooge McDuck, sitting and chortling on top of a huge pile of treasure…. But unlike him, I am actually DOING stuff while I chortle.

I just bought a new embroidery set...I have never embroidered. But I had to have it. I have more scrapbook items than I can count, and yes, I just ordered more things.
I have a plan to be able to sit down and do stuff, but time gets away from me.
My SABLE is strong over here.

OK I know this is gonna sound super weird.. I know.. but it is working for me... sorta...
I watch a lot of YouTube.. and there are some cross stitchers I follow (I dont cross stitch, I embroider... but thats a different subject.. squirrel) Anywayyyyy so they have Santa Sunday and Halloween Monday and patriotic Tuesdays... where they work on projects for that specific day.. not really those exact days, I cant really remember which day is what.. but I thought that was a good idea.. except in my crafty way...
In my job I work a rotation of 4 days on and 4 days off... my 1st day off is chore day... so it doesnt really count... but 2nd day off is diamond dot day.. I play with all the dots and I catch up on ALL the things I watch!! I like reality tv.. 3rd day off is scrapbook day.. and I play with all the paper.. 4th day off is embroidery day...
I am finishing my projects... slowly... but I am not burning myself out on it... sometimes I get in the groove of dots and dont scrap.. or vise versa... I do like that it is more specific and I dont have to decide what do I want to do today... it is already scheduled.. it may not work for everyone...
as for stash.. i am good with what I have.. I used to buy every single diamond art painting I wanted and then realized I would never do them all and where am I going to put them>?? but floss, fabric, felt and sequins are easy for me... scrapbook supplies.. story for another day... but I use it and what I dont use I let me grands use.. so i dont feel like its a waste..

Definitely.
I was looking through my yarn stash yesterday. It’s very organized by project bags but I have so many projects that I want to do and I don’t know how I will do them all, especially when new enticing project ideas come along,

I'm not sure I'm at SABLE levels - maybe for papercrafts - but going through my craft room is definitely on my to-do list at the moment. I did go through the scrapbooking section fairly recently and I haven't really been shopping so my stash is shrinking ever so slowly. I'm not a minimalist though - what I have is a limited space for each type of supply and try to stay within those spaces. Much of my stash comes from dh's yard sale/thrift store/clearance rack habit so I don't have as much $ invested as my supplies suggest Sewing is up next...I have too many sewing machines but they're not going anywhere All but one need repair of some sort and I really need to put that on my to-do list so I can get at least a couple working again. I've been downsizing my stash and only buying for projects for several years now. I need to go back through and be realistic about the remaining fabrics. Same with my pattern stash...my youngest is nearly 18 and there are no grandkids on the horizon...so I can probably pass along the Ottobre pattern magazines. Much of my sewing stash came from other people's destashing so I don't feel too guilty passing it along again. Genealogy is mostly digital and I'm actively organising that - I do have two cubes of books that could use a cleanout, I think. Cross stitch - I have one project and a small collection of threads and I need to put a deadline on actually WORKING on the project or letting it go Reading...I plead the fifth but I can't remember the last time I paid for the 50 cents or $1 for a book and often less so...it's a space and time issue not a spending one.

There actually was a thing going on on Twitter about a year ago with people stash shaming yarnies. And this one woman said that her stash of yarn was obscene. The amount of money she had spent on yarn over the years was outrageous and she had bin after bin of it. She said she felt so ashamed of it. And then her husband had a stroke. He could no longer work and their quality of life just dropped so much she had no room in their budget for anything but necessities. She had been knitting for 7 years on her stash and said she hadn't made a dent in it yet. So I think about that when I get the urge to shame myself or others. [article] I also view a lot of my stash as my "retirement stash" because once I retire I will not be able to afford to buy all this stuff, so I will get to use what I have. [/article] | |
These things I did NOT need to hear! Both sound like perfectly sane reasons to hang on to my SABLE situation. LOL I love being able to shop my stash. I also love buying new (or new-to-me) stuff - it really makes me happy to have pretty things. I do get overwhelmed sometimes, though, and my home is not big enough to justify the size of my stash. I enjoy working with kits, and I know my supplies are better used when I kit them up for myself. DH is a camera buff, and he feels sad sometimes about the size of his supplies vs the amount of time he actually spends using them. I'm always reassuring him that it's just fine to enjoy the supplies not only for what they are, but also for the possibilities they represent.

jeremysgirl... I usually do stick to the schedule... If I am busy on scrapbook day and dont have time to scrap... then I get to it next week... if I want to scrap but its embroidery day, then I embroider... I know that I will be happy once I get it all out and started.. If I am trying to finish the final bit of a diamond art then I will carry on until I am done... but I wont do dots all week... it was causing me to get frustrated.. so I have to make myself do something different... to me it is sorta like working out... lol.. leg day, arm day, cardio or weights... I cant do legs all the time because it is easiest and i like it best... I want to do all the things.. this way helps me finish projects that I want to finish and do the crafts that I do love but balances it in a way that I dont get overwhelmed with 6 years of back pictures that need to be scrapped... I get what I get done in the time alloted that day.. and I know I will be back at it soon enough...
