I have always said burst out laughing. It wasn't until recently that I realised some people say bust out laughing. I thought that 'bust' was the American saying, but I just saw a Facebook post abut the Queen on a British site, and it said 'bust.' So now I'm curious to know whether you say burst or bust. In particular, what do UK Peas say? Yep, this is a fluff post with a poll, and regional differences, which covers off several things on the favourite type of posts thread.

I burst out laughing but I have also been known to bust up laughing.

I don't know how to answer. I don't really say either, but I do say "bust UP" not "bust OUT", and I don't usually say the word "laughing". I would say, "The comedian was so funny I busted up." So, do I pick "neither" or "Oprah"??

I say bust out but I was always under the impression this was vernacular slang.

I must say both, because they both seemed natural when I just tested them out loud.

Burst 😊 Maybe the comment you saw was someone who had picked up the Americanism. We’ll see what other Brits say 😊

Brit who bursts out laughing. Bust out is American in my life.
Bust UP has nothing to do with laughing, again in my life. It means to break up with a partner or have a fight with someone.

Mostly burst. Busted out. Not likely bust, alone.

I "burst out" laughing, but "bust UP" laughing, as others have said. East coast USA. Yep, this type of thread was on my favorites list.

Burst out when I'm suddenly laughing at something for a short duration, a burst of laughter. When I'm laughing over something for awhile, I would say I busted up laughing.

I picked Oprah because I feel I use both. It is hard to tell when I am sitting here reading the thread saying them out loud…trying to determine what I say. 🙄😆
I think typically I say I burst out laughing or I busted a gut or bust out laughing. East Coast/New England here.

East coast US--I think as a kid I would have said "bust", for sure. Now both seem equal to me.

Interesting..... so it sounds like we burst OUT but bust UP!
I've never heard anyone IRL say "I busted up laughing." We would usually say "I pissed myself laughing." I should have added that as a poll option! Another one would be "I cacked myself (laughing)" or "I cracked up."
