I will admit, I love, love, LOVE the manager's markdown sections.
It's like a freaking treasure hunt.
One grocery store near my work has a discount bakery section that is loaded with the previous day's stuff. We're talking 90% off pies, cakes, boxes of pastries, nice loaves of breads. I have to hold myself back and buy responsibly or I'd not be able to walk through the front door after awhile.
Another grocery store almost always lists seasonal coffee at $1/bag two weeks after the holiday. One year I bought 12 bags (with plenty more left for other shoppers) of Christmas coffee and was set for awhile.
Last week I bought ten taco seasoning mixes for 16 cents each.
I also keep an eye out for meats that have been discounted. If I had a stand alone freezer, I would buy hams and turkeys after the holidays when they are deeply discounted.
It's also a nice way to pick up shampoo and conditioner that I might not have bought otherwise.
Anyone else look for the clearance section?

Yes, always. My grocery store almost always has the Cheesecake Factory brown bread in the clearance section.

It’s been so long since I have shopped inside I don’t even know if that is still available. I have used delivery only since the beginning of Covid and haven’t noticed anything like that while shopping online. I will check it out if I ever see anything like that online.

Not the specific section as ours is mainly breads, bakery items, and canned goods we can't eat.
But I do love to shop meat counter markdowns!! I was able to stock up on organic free range chicken in various forms with the manager markdowns.

No. That area skeeves me out. Just curious, why?
Is that area in your store not clean?
I'll count myself lucky that my grocery stores put clearance on an end cap, or right next to dairy, but always on very clean, organized shelves.

It depends on the store. One store has it in a weird spot, same store different location puts it by the milk where I can find it, one has one cart where I remember to check and the rest in a weird aisle you’d never go to look for food, and one marks the rack clearance but it’s not really a discount.

I don't really shop online for most groceries, so I'm not sure if they have it online either.
I've heard of an app Too Good To Go, but I'm not sure how widely available it all is.

The only times I’ve seen a clearance section at the grocery store is random items on a rolling cart adjacent to the meat section and in front of the back of the store entrance. It does give “not clean vibes” and the random assortment of items that have seen better days does not appeal to me. I am not really into my food being on sale - like the meat looks not right/bloody, produce looks bad etc. it may be snobby of me, but it just grosses me out. I will buy an item on the regular shelf that says clearance item- like the store is no longer going to stock that item and wants to clear their inventory. I’ll load up on that.

Yes I do. The online shopping supermarket I use for home delivery has 'flash sales' just before you check out.
Most of the items there are at least 50% off and good for another 2 or 3 days - plus a lot are freezable.

I think they bury it in the back so that we have to walk through the store to see it, thus passing other goods we might not have seen & bought if we didn't have to walk in so far. It's the same reason that all the basics are around the perimeter of the store. Forces you to walk past pretty much everything else to get to them. They are betting on the consumers impulse shopping habits! Even knowing this I am a sucker for an impulse buy! So is DH. He'll come home and say that the candy fell into his basket as he walked by! As for checking the clearance area, yes I'll check it out. The Kroger near me used to have some really good deals in their section, but I rarely shop there lately.

No. The clearance area is just a small little alcove/hallway at the back of the store. Things look like they are just thrown on the shelves. I looked a few times and it is usually items we don’t buy.

I know what you mean by on the shelf marked clearance.... I bought some cereal awhile ago that had been St Patty's Day themed. It was on the regular cereal aisle shelves, but it's tag had "discontinued" on it, and it was selling for 54 cents a box. Figured we'd try it at that price.

The stores around here don't have a discounted section. Walmart does, but it's usually just old bread and bakery items.

I definitely do, depending on the store. At the closest local store, they have reduced produce, and that's my secret go-to spot when I need produce *today* and everything for sale won't be ripe for half a week, kwim? I go check the reduced produce, and a lot of times I can find something ready to use right that day. Now, one of our regional stores (Wegmans) is the type to also sell household items, toys, books, etc., so you never know what kind of cool things you'll find on clearance there. Forget food, you might score Lego to save for holiday gifts, or an umbrella for your patio! ETA: Also, the closest Wegmans to us sets their clearance section up right before the check-out lanes. So you're totally done shopping, ready to pay, and there is this section you have to pass just calling out "Look here! Look here!"

I’ll have a quick look but generally would only buy meat or fish. It seems to be mainly prepared vegetables, packaged sandwiches, processed meats etc that we don’t eat much of.

I always found good deals on meat that had been marked down close to the sell by date or possibly extras from a catering order. Missing out on those deals are the biggest downside of doing online orders most weeks. But other than meat I rarely saw the discounted section because it was in an area I rarely went. When I did go past it and look there was nothing great.

they have reduced produce, The local stores here do not have reduced produce, or meats. The closest store to us does reductions on many things, but they are all offered right in the place they normally live. The produce tends to be items that are very ripe in comparison to the rest of what's out. And it's just on a rolling rack right in the produce department. I know I've seen red stickers on meats that are within a day or two of their sell by date. Not somewhere special, but just in with everything else. Same with the bakery. You might walk by and see a few single serving desserts with big red stickers because they were made yesterday and didn't sell. Pre-made hoagies will be marked down similarly. If they make the sandwiches Monday morning, then by Monday evening they are marked down. And they will just be in the cooler next to the full price items. Dairy items as well--walking down the aisle, you'll see big red stickers.

The extra ripe bananas are right next to the newer bananas with no mark down. I’ve never seen any other extra ripe fruits on the stands. I think they try to remove them. I almost bought a rotten cantaloupe once. It was regular priced. 🤣 I’ve seen meats (and other items) that were at or past the “Best By” dates. No mark downs. Same with dairy products. I guess our stores believe in “buyer beware”. 😒 ETA - When I go to the Japanese market, I see markdowns there. But not at the regular mainstream markets.

My son and his wife love the reduced section. They are always so happy to find something there. We joke that the people who make the most spend the least.
