I vote no and I also would never have one in the kitchen.

So -- what is your vote. Is it just bananas to have a fan over your dining room table, or should I get over it and just get another fan/light combo? Absolutely no to a fan over the dining table! It cools the food off and blows dust and particles into the food. Even DH agrees with me on that - and he also keeps our house cold enough to hang meat in!

We have a fan/light combo over our table. We had it put in. The fan is nice when we are playing games or doing work at the table.

I vote no. We have one in our kitchen and it’s super hard to keep it clean enough to actually turn on. It gets sticky from cooking oils and then the dust sticks to that so it gets gross. I wouldn’t want one over my dining table for that reason. I’d rather have a smaller portable fan if I really needed one occasionally in that space.

We don't have a fan in our dining room - just a chandelier, but we do in the breakfast area in the kitchen which is where we do all of our eating. With the proximity to the kitchen it really does help for nights when the oven has been running for a bit. And we don't keep our house warm. We keep it pretty cool all year long. But even with the AC vent in the floor right next to the table where we eat, it can get warm when someone has been cooking. We don't run it at hurricane speed. It's usually on the lowest setting, just to move the air around. So it doesn't cause the food to get cold.

I vote no fan over the table. I have fans in every room and most of them are on all the time, but not where we eat. Have you seen how grody a fan can get? Not over my food, please.

I've never had one so that will tinge my thoughts but I would vote no. Fans get dusty. As you clean them and they spin, dust falls off. That would be my issue. I either didn't clean well or often enough and we would use when guests were over. I could just see that moment, when that fuzz relinquished it's hold on the blade and fell into the middle of someone's plate. This. I was at someone's house on a hot day and they do have a ceiling fan in the dining room, and the husband said something about putting on the fan and his wife immediately started telling him "No!", because she realized she hadn't dusted it recently.

I'm a ceiling fan person. I have them in all bedrooms, the kitchen, the living room and the family room. However if I had a dining room, I may not want a ceiling fan, maybe a nicer, more 'formal' light.

I also have a temperature like the surface of the sun, and I LOVE moving air, even in winter. However, I vote no fan. If it's non-negotiable, make sure it's on its own switch so you can turn it off during mealtimes.

I hate fans with every fiber of my being, but I also don’t live somewhere where they are a necessity. Having said that, I did just order a couple of “fandeliers” for two bedrooms in our house. That was my compromise with DH. (I’m not sure I could compromise over the dining room table, though. The idea of the dust being flung around is certainly off putting. 😂 ) Oddly, dust does not fly off of it. It just...clings until we do something about it. Our dining table is dark wood, so we would definitely know if the fan were flinging dust about

Thank you all for weighing in. I'm surprised at how many would have a fan - depending on the circumstances. I figured 100% would be on my side LOL. I've agreed to look and consider a fan that we can turn off when eating. Consider being the key word here.

I could never have a fan over the dining room table. I would have to then invest in many, many paperweights!

I detest the stupid pull chains to turn the fan on/off. Both my kids have double switches in their rooms- one switch is the fan the other is the light. It's like a half height switch with both being in one "normal" size switch.

I have one over mine just because that was the only ceiling fixture and I wanted a fan to move my heat and cool it in the summer. It is a main room I am in a lot. I don’t turn it on during a dinner.
We also have one at our camp. It was there. We use it a lot but not typically when we are eating. But it is great if we are playing games or just sitting around and it is hot.
I know that there is not a lot of love for ceiling fans but I like them. I think they do an amazing job of moving warm air or cooling. I am not so concerned aesthetics and prefer the good it does. I also do not have AC so there is that.

I'm not a fan of ceiling fans anywhere. I get very little comfort from them. When I need a fan, I need one at my level. So definitely not in the dining room.

We have two above our eat in kitchen table (just a light above the dining room table). If it is hot, yes, we need the fans on.

I vote no over the dining room table.
Full disclosure: We have a combo ceiling fan/light in every bedroom and a tower oscillating fan saved me during perimenopause.

Ceiling fans are ubiquitous where I live, but most people don’t place them over a dining table. We lived south of Houston for 25 years. We had ceiling fans in every room except the dining room. The fans just collect too much dust. I get that having a fan on lowers the apparent temperature but, at some point you just need to set the A/C temp lower.

My house is super hot in the summer so yes, I am pro any and all fans. I don't have one over my dining room table... yet.

Turn the fan off when you are eating, then the debris from the fan won't get on your food. If you get a swiffer dust it regularly. How often do you dust your fans that aren't over food? Weekly, monthly, yearly, never? It's a fan to push air that will help with your comfort, who cares where it is located. What if you are doing a puzzle at the dinner table during the hot months? Don't turn on the fan because the debris will get on the puzzle pieces?
My mom sought out a specific fan while she was renovating her kitchen when cooking at the stove so she wouldn't over heat while cooking. It was fabulous. She remodeled her home that was great for her and about 5 years into her comfort fanness she passed. I remember walking into her kitchen, thinking mom, you have cancer you shouldn't be cooking, but she said, no, it's ok and I can make this meal for you. My sister lives in the house now and the kitchen that has the most spectacular fan.

UPDATE: Because I know everyone is invested. LOL The fan gods have smiled on me. We went to the light store and we have 3 choices. A fan, a light, or a fandelear. However, the fandelear is a little above our price point and the fan would have to be so small it defeats the purpose. So...we've decided light is more important than wind over our dining table. LOL. We'll have a separate fan installed in the family room -- the kitchen, dining area and family room is one long open area - to move the air around. The most amazing part is my DH and I actually agreed on a style. Miracle of all miracles. When the light sales guy asked what style we wanted, I piped out with mid-century modern. My DH turned around and gave me some shizz about making up words and what in the world did that mean. The light guy just kinda smirked and we went to the computer and sure as shit enough it was an actual style. Take that DH. Pinterest told me what I liked. So there.
