The fan/light above the dining room table crapped out and we are in the market for a new one.
My vote is to NOT have a fan over the table. Why in the world do you want to cool off the food while everyone is eating?
My husband (who runs a body temp equal to the sun) can't imagine NOT having a fan as it "moves the air around and cools it off".
We do have AC and I believe we keep the house cold enough to hang meat, but that is a story for a different day.
So -- what is your vote. Is it just bananas to have a fan over your dining room table, or should I get over it and just get another fan/light combo?

No fan for me. Ceiling fans are not that common around here really. Bedrooms is where I’d put one if we had them but definitely not over the dining room!

We have a fan over the dining room table, but we turn it off while we are eating.

I have been seeing fandeliers (Fan/chandeliers) I am thinking about getting one of those for our office.
I think it's the best of both worlds. But if I had to choose one or the other I would pick a light fixture.

I've never had one so that will tinge my thoughts but I would vote no. Fans get dusty. As you clean them and they spin, dust falls off. That would be my issue. I either didn't clean well or often enough and we would use when guests were over. I could just see that moment, when that fuzz relinquished it's hold on the blade and fell into the middle of someone's plate.

Growing up we had a ceiling fan in dining room. I seem to remember we would turn it off when we were eating in there. But then it was on to move air around. Our house was set up that you walked through the dining room to get to the living room and those 2 rooms were open to each other so moving the air around was helpful.

We have one in the dining nook and the dining room. Not usually on during dinner, but we often play games or do puzzles at one or both tables, or sometimes I will sew at the dining table,so yes, the fan gets used often.

We have one over the kitchen table in the eating nook. It was there when we bought the house. We did change it out to a different style. We don’t use it much, but I’ve never noticed it cooling the food down.

We live in TX, and ceiling fans are a must, but we do not have one in the kitchen, or over the dining room table. Those areas are open to the living room, so there is air circulation.

We have a fan over the dining room table, but we turn it off while we are eating. Same. We only eat at the table for a few hours a day. The fan is for the rest of our waking hours to keep air moving around our main floor.

It gets so hot in our house even with AC on I need the air moving. The dining area is one of my favorite places in our house this time of year because the ceiling fan is strong and moves the air nicely. We don’t eat a lot of super hot foods this time of year either to keep cool so it’s not an issue. We turn the fan off during the cooler months so my vote is yes for a fan.

Another vote for yes. Growing up we had one over the dinning room table and it came in handle for the summer. We would have it on low while eating and then go back to medium or high.
Never an issue with food getting cold.

I'll say it depends on the layout of your home. Is your kitchen open to the family room? If so, then you may not need one. If your kitchen is boxed in then I'd get one. Remember you can turn it to low when using it.
Our previous home my husband hung fans in all of the rooms. We didn't have one over the eating area because we had one in the family room we could turn on.
In our home prior we had a ceiling fan over the table because the kitchen was boxed off from the rest of the rooms.
So.....look at your layout of your home. Battle from there.

I vote no. We have ceiling fans in every bedroom and in our family room. Our dining “room” is right next to the family room. Open concept floor plan so it’s really all one space. We still turn the ceiling fan off when we are eating at the dining room table.

we have one over our dining room table, when we first moved in one of the things we noticed about that room is how hot and stuffy it can get without something there circulating the air around. We quickly replaced the chandelier in there with a light fixture/fan combo and it's a game changer. I'd think about the air circulation needs of the room more than just the cooling off of the food.

I hate fans with every fiber of my being, but I also don’t live somewhere where they are a necessity. Having said that, I did just order a couple of “fandeliers” for two bedrooms in our house. That was my compromise with DH.
(I’m not sure I could compromise over the dining room table, though. The idea of the dust being flung around is certainly off putting. 😂 )

That is a gorgeous fan! This house had five fans in it when I bought it, all absolutely not my style. I am well aware this is a senior golf community, but my taste is vastly different than the decor of this house. The fans all have bright gold housing and the lights have frilly covers on them. I purchased new fans as the first thing I bought in this house. The existing fans, that I don’t think even my mother would have chosen, will not be wasted. There is a recycle home store in this town and all the fans will be donated to them. The light over the dining table is also frilly and the glass is etched in flowers and vines, not my taste. I purchased a new light for that area also. If I had seen the fans you linked, I would have chosen them. Again, just gorgeous! Not for the dining room, but they would have gone in the office and all bedrooms. Growing up, my parent’s living room and dining room were one huge room. They did install fans over both the living room and the dining table, but it was always shut off during meals and turned back on after to keep the air moving in that huge room. My preference would be not to have a fan over the dining table, but if one was there, I would just turn it off during meals.

I like a fan in every room......for circulation. I love love love....a fan above my bed. My vote would be.... yes to a fan above the dining table.
In the grand scheme of things, a ceiling fan above the dining table is not a battle I would choose to fight or engage in. ....especially when there is an option to turn it off. In my opinion, the "sitting there food" time frame is minimal, since most people begin their food consumption and eating within a few minutes of being seated at the table. Second or third helpings can always be re-heated in the microwave for a minute or two, if necessary.

flanz that is a very special fan... Most don't realize less blades are the best for air circulation.. Years ago my grandfather carved his own fan blades. Much smaller than the one you posted though..

My sister has one in her kitchen above the dining table and it is absolutely needed. She has bay windows that get the western exposure so it gets VERY warm in her kitchen. It's just stifling without it on.
I have a fandolier in my living room and guest room but not the primary. I have a tower fan blowing on me all night winter or summer. I need the air even with the AC on.

I’m a solid Yes but make sure it’s on its own switch.
We have a fan in the ”dining room” over the pool table, one in the living room, one in each bedroom. I LOVE ceiling fans! On to blow air DOWN in the winter (10’ ceilings) to move the heat from the ceiling. On to pull air UP in the summer for circulation. It also keeps flying bugs down when our monster back door is open.
