I have a long plane ride coming up that I am very nervous about. It's 8 hrs. Gulp. I am not scared about the actual flying, I am nervous about not being able to get out of the plane for that long. Other than sleeping, I don't ever go that long without getting outside, running somewhere, etc. Even on weekends I never stay home all day. My Dr. doesn't want me to take a sleep aid as that is too long to go without getting up and moving around. I know I need to plan out what I am going to do during the flight. I think I can read for at least an hour, watch a movie (2 hrs) and then Some ideas I had: color and fussy cut images, (although I dislike adult coloring books, I do like to color stamped images for cards) piece together some of my more intricate die cuts? Other than that I am drawing a blank. Any thoughts? Anyone else take scrappy/cardmaking stuff on a plane? Thank you for any ideas, I appreciate it!

I sort photos on my iPad. That's a fantastic idea, thank you!! I am not sure I am bringing my ipad but I can block out at least 30 min-1 hr for going through photos on my phone.

Not sure you can take scissors into the cabin, so fussy cutting may be off the table.
Paper piecing is an option, though I'd probably stay away from anything too tiny or bring a sticky mat so paper doesn't accidentally go flying everywhere if the table tray gets bumped. Podcasts are a great way to pass some hours, or download some of your favourite crafty videos/streams. Puzzles or tablet/phone games. Colouring usually works out well, as long as you don't need too many supplies. Normally I'd be reading, watching or playing video games for long trips.

I recently went on a 14hr flight. I find it really hard to papercraft you just really don't have a lot of room. I watched movieS/shows, read, slept, listened to podcasts, sorted phone photos, journaled on my phone. I was with family and we talked about our plans for the trip and who we were visiting. Bring the smallest number of things that you can do the most with. I had my phone, kindle, small notebook, pencil & pens.

Scissors can come on board as long as the blades are less than 3” long. I’ve had one pair taken by an overzealous agent overseas that were a hair over even though they had rounded plastic points 😆 But anyway, depending on how crowded or bumpy the flight is it can be hard to do precise things.
I watch the longest movies I can find that I think I’ll enjoy. Suddenly I don’t mind how ridiculously long films have gotten! I crochet while watching movies to keep two parts of my brain active. The repetitiveness is soothing.
Coloring or cutting while watching or listening to something might work a similar way. I avoid watching short TV shows at all costs - 22min episodes break the flight up in a way that make me crazy.

On our flight to Amsterdam, I set up the pages for my travel journal. I made divider pages for the different parts of our trip, title pages for different planned excursions. Used mostly stickers and diecuts, glued down papers, photo mats, journaling spots. Journaled about the start of the journey.
have often found they use larger planes for the longer flights, and you can get up and walk around some, do some stretches.

I would read for a lot of the time.
Scrapbook related: I would bring chipboard alphabets and sticker alphabets (already pre-cut) and make words out of them. I would bring small baggies to put the words in. I would also bring my "ideas" list of words. I made a word list awhile back, based on my next few years of photos., that have yet to be scrapbooked.

I've never been able to craft in a plane. There's just not enough room for me. And, if you drop something it's heck to try to pick it up. I try to travel as light as possible anyway.
I usually read or listen to an audiobook, watch whatever movie, and TRY to sleep. I always bring a paper version book of puzzles (word search, cross words, suduko) and a pen. (you'll need a pen to fill out customs forms if it's an int'l flight).
Check to see if your phone or tablet has a screen privacy mode. I hate it when my row mate is glancing over to see what I'm reading or watching. (I learned this from my business travel days)
I have a flight planned later in the year and I think I might take a skein of variegated yarn and a crochet hook (if allowed) and make a scarf.

What about origami? You don't need much room and it will keep your hands and head busy.

Bring a bag with a ton of different 30 minute activities. When I bring a bag of stuff I could do, I tend to just mindlessly watch tv to avoid it. I feel like long plane rides are awful. I cannot sleep on planes and get very antsy.

We have a 9.5 hour flight to Thailand coming up, and I am tossing up whether to take my MacBook or not, so I can do some digital scrapping. Last year on our flight home from Thailand, and our 4 hour flight home from Perth this year, I did what mom suggested. I started going through all the photos on my phone that I had taken on the trip, and writing down in my notebook what ones I was going to use in my travel album. It gave me a good head start when I got home. Another thing you could do without having to use any tools, is to go through the photos you haven't scrapped yet, and start making your own page designs / sketches for them in a notebook. I do a similar thing in Photoshop, but it's making a template instead of drawing a sketch. Same same.

Do you do any stitching or yarn crafts?

I just saw some women at my craft group doing diamond art coasters. Those are small enough to carry along, I would think.
I like the idea of fussy cutting.

I gave up on trying to do any crafting on a plane, due to the small table surface and easily lost small pieces. I usually take lots of digital books, a neck pillow, and a jacket, along with munchies.
Don’t forget to get up and stretch your legs by walking up and down the aisle as much as is feasible when you get up to use the restroom, before returning to your seat. Sitting too long can reportedly result in possible blood clots.

Sitting too long can reportedly result in possible blood clots. This is why my Dr, when I messaged them about possible sleep aids said no. She doesn't want me to be able to just sit the whole flight. She said compression socks and movement lol. Thanks all, these are really good suggestions! Unfotunately I have no aptitude for puzzles or games (I think I was born without that gene) and have never done any fiber crafts, but now might be the time to learn. I might pick up a small cross stitch project. I find paper piecing and putting together diecut images time consuming but fun as well, so maybe I will bring a few of my more complicated ones.

Just my thought about actual needle projects....What if you drop/lose the needle and then can't find it? The next person that comes along pokes themselves, or gets it in their feet? It can happen. As mentioned above it will not be so easy to find it if you drop it within the confined space.
I have found that I generally don't need to bring as much entertainment as I think I need. Five hours to Hawaii and I did not even do 1/4th of the stuff I brought with me. Save yourself the trouble of carrying extra stuff and consider that you will not need something for the full 8 hours.
You could also clean out your email since you'll have your phone with you.

You could also clean out your email since you'll have your phone with you. Good point. A lot of people regret bringing their AirPods because they fall out and roll... Bringing a little magnetic clip to stash the needle on can help. And if you do by chance drop it you have a better chance to find it with a strong magnet. I keep an OliClip from my planner supplies clipped to my work and that holds the needle really firmly when I need to put it down. A little magnet clip can also be useful for other things while traveling, like keeping a curtain closed. I agree with you though, that I have way more terror of being bored than actual energy to do crafts while traveling, so I usually bring too much. I try to bring something very repetitive and simple, and mostly do that during the times when time is dragging the worst - waiting to actually take off, and after I wake up and I'm still only half way across the Pacific Ocean (it's a very big empty ocean 😣 ). Editing photos, deleting the bad ones, and marking favorites is also a good task for a while.

I know Australia is big but I sometimes forget just how big. I did fly over it diagonally once, NZ to Singapore and man, it just went on and on...

Like a few people already mentioned, I clean through my photos on my phone. I am not a digital project life scrapper but on a plane it’s so convenient. I make digital pages to use for planning pages with photos and journaling.
Amy Tan has a few YouTube videos where she shows the crafty things she packs for the plane and then films herself mid flight working on her travelers journal pages. She even watercolors.

I agree with you though, that I have way more terror of being bored than actual energy to do crafts while traveling, so I usually bring too much. Me too. I have the boredom threshold of a gnat, so have all kinds of things planned, most of which I never touch. But having things to do is my "security blanket". I knit socks, edit photos, write blog posts and draw (occasionally paint). I try not to have too many really small things because they get caught up in the tiny spaces. I did once try to make a book of the various paper ephemera that we were given in flight...then used that in my travel journal later. The paper strip that wraps around the cutlery or whatever has adhesive on the end, so can be useful...and the paper sleeve that contains salt and pepper makes a useful envelope. Yes, I have been *that* desperate <ggg> the thing is, I plan lots of things to do and then I fall asleep...Grrrrr travelsoul thanks for highlighting Amy Tan's YT videos - I need to look those out!
