If you do not have these ants from Hell in your area, you are blessed.
I made the mistake of stepping on their home Monday evening. OUCH!
However, it made me think that some of you who have fire ants in your area, may not know this little "trick."
If you get bitten/stung by the fire ants, IMMEDIATELY find a cotton ball and some bleach. Swipe over the bite the cotton ball laden with bleach. It will stop the burning, and in most cases, eliminate the pus blisters.
I was so busy tending to my legs and feet that I never imagined they were biting my fingers. I have 2 fingers swollen up so much I can't wear my rings even today.

Thank you for posting that. It’s happened to me many times. I’ve used different remedies ( that didn’t work ), but never bleach. Thanks again.

One of my more vivid memories of living in New Orleans was being at Audubon Park and sitting down on a fire anthill.

Oh my, sorry your got bitten by the little devils.
I was out at the airport to view a friend do a sky jump when my son was 3 years old. While we watched as the plane assended and waiting for her to jump, my son and nephew were watching/chasing little lizzards running around. Son came up to me crying with his arm pulled out of his sleeve and tucked across his chest. I'm thinking what it the world. Got his had out and his fist was clinched and he's still crying quit loudly. Once I got his fist unclinched, I saw 2 fire ants biting the palm of his hand. He was so sick after that. He had fever for 2 days. Those buggers are not a fun thing to tango with.
I hope you feel better soon.

I can't even imagine the pain and your body afterwards. One time I knelt on a fire ant hill ( it was hidden in the grass). My knee and thigh looked bad.

I read an article that said the ants swarm over the victim and then the leader gives a signal and they all bite/sting at the same time, which is why they inflict such pain.
Fact or fiction, IDK.

Fact! We had a friends 4 year old standing near the fence at a rodeo. Unknowingly the child was standing in a fire ant bed. They were up her leg to the knee before she started screaming.

Good tip. I loathe the little pus blisters.
My youngest stepped in an anthill at a park one time when she was about 2, and had nasty bites all up one foot and leg.
The asps are apparently worse, though. I haven't been bitten by one, but anytime I've had to cover recess duty we worry about the kids finding/touching one. They're apparently excruciatingly painful.

This Maryland girl didn’t know what a fire ant was until that one trip to Florida. We went out for dinner. Dd and I were chilly so I ran out to the car to grab sweaters. Dh had backed in so I stepped on the median. BIG mistake. It had been raining so I ran my hand down the wet car and used that water to get them off my legs. Ran, literally, ran back in the restaurant, threw the sweaters at dh and continued on to the restroom. Lifted my leg into the sink to wash with soap and water. I had no idea what was happening. I had some blisters on my feet and ankles for that trip. I literally still struggle to stand in grass to this day. You can keep them in the south!

I’ll keep my gross little black ants that invade my home over fire ants any day! They sound horrible.

I am allergic and will have an anaphylactic reaction if I get bit by enough of them—like 10 or more. So I always had to be hyper vigilant.
Luckily— no fire ants in my part of CA! (Yet.)
But we have LOTS of gophers…we are battling them in our back yard…but they are everywhere. And I still have a visceral reaction every time I see a mound of dirt. I always panic for a few seconds until I remember….
