Has anyone who has read the bulk of Project 2025 unearthed anything regarding veterans? That is the only thing that could possibly get through my father's skull regarding the damage Republicans are unleashing upon the US.
He doesn't care about education, women's rights, the environment, anything, but maybe saving 10 cents at the store and making sure he still gets veterans benefits.
He's already waxing ineloquent on SM about his hope that Trump will rise again.

From the Defeat Project 2025 webpage: “ Project 2025 proposes that the VA reduce expenses by cutting benefits while funneling a larger fraction of its current budget into the pockets of private contractors. It proposes a personnel policy of replacing the leadership and decision makers with political appointees, while outsourcing core functions and silencing dissent from existing staff. It mixes policies from the current VA strategic plan with a dangerous vein of reduced benefits, corporate plundering, and politicization.” defeatproject2025.org/issues/veterans/

They want to undo abortion and gender affirming care. Eliminate inclusion initiatives aka wokeness. Outsource to private sector and eliminate “obsolete VA campuses.” Pretty much summed up in this statement:
“Rescind all departmental clinical policy directives that are contrary to principles of conservative governance starting with abortion services and gender reassignment surgery.”
Unfortunately, your Dad will probably think this will mean good things, and people like him won’t be negatively affected.

I worked as a psychologist for the VA as they were starting to privatize some of their services. And then the director of my hospital then went to prison for 57 months for giving insider information to contractors in exchange for cash. So, yeah - no chance of corruption as they privatize.

Here ya go casiiThe Project 2025 blueprint for a potential second Donald Trump administration would plunder veterans' benefits and shower cash on private contractors. Right-wing policy makers led by the Heritage Foundation are crafting a detailed plan to slash federal spending, cut taxes, gut regulatory agencies, stock the federal government with loyalists and privatize many government functions, including the Veterans Health Administration. www.rawstory.com/project-2025-veterans/

More casiiThe Veterans Administration should eliminate concurrent eligibility for both service-related disability benefits and military retirement benefits, which would reduce mandatory outlays by at least $160 billion during the FY 2023–FY 2032 period. www.heritage.org/budget/pages/recommendations/2.600.22.htmlNarrow Eligibility for Veterans Disability by Excluding Disabilities Unrelated to Military Duties Budget Blueprint for FY2023 | Other Mandatory | Veterans Benefits and Services The Veterans Administration should preclude disability benefits for conditions that cannot be related to military service, which would reduce mandatory outlays by at least $37.6 billion during the FY 2023–FY 2032 period. www.heritage.org/budget/pages/recommendations/2.700.24.html

And more.. casiiA chapter in the massive, 920-page Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise released by the conservative think tank details cost-cutting measures and other proposed changes to the Veterans Administration, including the replacement of its leaders and decision makers with political appointees. Brooks D. Tucker, who served as chief of staff for Trump’s second VA secretary Robert Wilkie, wrote the chapter on VA reforms with the assistance of Darin Selnick, who called for dismantling the agency when serving on a presidential commission in 2016 and worked for the Koch brothers-funded Concerned Veterans for America (CVA). *** Among other recommendations, the plan proposes eliminating concurrent eligibility for both service-related disability benefits and military retirement benefits, which Tucker says would reduce mandatory outlays by at least $160 billion through 2032, and revising the disability rating awards that determine eligibility for benefits and determine monthly disability compensation to reap "significant cost savings." The plan also proposes to end enrollment in VA medical care for veterans in two low-priority groups to save an estimated $69 billion through 2032 and narrow eligibility for veterans disability by excluding disabilities that cannot be related to military service, which would save an estimated $37.6 billion during that same period. Tucker recommends the expansion of Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) rather that maintaining or upgrading "obsolete" or "unaffordable" VA health care campuses that currently provide inpatient services, emergency care and other health services in one location. Project 2025 also calls for privatizing the Department of Defense’s current TRICARE system offered to military families, which Tucker claims would provide higher quality care and result in $60 billion in savings, and require married service members to share a housing allowance and document their housing expenditures.www.rawstory.com/project-2025-veterans/Random comments: ***. It’s just fear mongering made up by the left wing liberals. They seem to nit look at how the republicans are voting just what they say. Like Rick Scot (think that’s who it was) going on about how wonderful IVF is and that it has lead to at least one grandchild in an ad but he voted against IVF within days of this commercial. They vote against things and then when they pass anyways and their voters get the benefits they claim look what I did for you even though you can easily look and see they were against it 🤦♀️.

That is the only thing that could possibly get through my father's skull regarding the damage Republicans are unleashing upon the US. Just wanted to add on this thread for the Veterans specifically - I've been trying to read the 900+ pages and another one of the things they say is that they want to get rid of military personnel who are doing jobs that civilians can do because it's CHEAPER to hire civilians. My Uncle was in the Army for years and years and has gone onto become a Government Contractor for even longer overseas. I wonder how folks like him will appreciate being replaced with cheaper labor?

Johnson's pledge 2025!! It would also cut the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) that American soldiers use when stationed at various places around the world. As Raw Story reported on July 4th, the plan calls for further privatization of veteran healthcare. www.rawstory.com/republican-budget-2025/

As Raw Story reported on July 4th, the plan calls for further privatization of veteran healthcare. www.rawstory.com/republican-budget-2025/I don't have a strong opinion or enough of an understanding of the intention for further privatization of veteran healthcare at this time to comment.. I do have a strong opinion that military BAH has gotten so far out of control, I would LOVE to see it dialed back. Significant year over year increases, while the rest of the country faces wage stagnation. Additionally BAH isn't taxable. In some states, it isn't used in the Child Support Calculation. Even if it isn't cut, my belief is that it should be taxed, and it should figure into child support calculations in every state. Putting my zip in, an E1 (E2 is an all but automatic promotion in 6 months - so zero experience or responsibility), with zero dependents is entitled to a tax free $2,200 for BAH. Goes up to $2800 if you have dependents. This is in addition to Base Pay ($2017), and BAS ($460) if you're getting BAH you're getting BAS.) So, a person with less than 6 months work experience, and no responsibility other than to show up is making $4677/mo day one. Half of it is tax free. This is with free healthcare, dental, 30 day vaca, plus holidays and holiday schedule etc, a retirement in 20 years is there if they want it. Ironically, the crusty vets I know are all about whining that "burger flippers want $15/hour." Hell, privates (again, no experience, no education required, and no responsibility) are pulling in over $20, if they work 30 days of the month, 8 hours a day. Plus benefits and the tax free BAH! $51k a year, plus benefits... Here's a little calculator if you are interested in comparing to your area. Surely someone will say "ohhhhhh but usually privates are in the barracks!!" Yep, true, and sometimes people of higher rank choose to live in housing, forgoing BAH. We are still looking at paying privates $24k plus covering their food, housing (including utilities and maintenance), training and benefits. But that's not what the post I quoted is talking about, it is about dialing back BAH.. Just wanted to throw it out there in case anyone is interested in the real numbers. themilitarywallet.com/bah-rates/I'm all for taking care of our military, but this is taxpayer money. It should be more in line with the pay people paying them are receiving.

I'm sorry I haven't been back to reply sooner! It's been straight up chaos here in our immediate family. No emergencies, but just a lot of projects happening all at once.
I will say I haven't personally talked to my father yet, but I had posted a link on Threads with a comment that Project 2025 will harm veterans and he responded.
"I have not read, and do not need to read that proposition. Some of the insurrectionist should be pardon, so I'm not. I totally agree that many of the present civil servants should be replaced. This is done by every administration so don't act surprised. Unnecessary abortions should be defunded. Some Democrats should be prosecuted as well as some Republicans and of course do not forget independence." This is a cut and paste of his exact comment.
I've thought about sending an email to address his comment point by point. I've thought about dropping it. At this point, I believe I have to accept that either he is 100% MAGA and ready to sell the country to Christofascists or his ego & pride are so big that even if the leopard were eating his face, he'd send money to the leopard. I told DH that I'm likely to be done with him after this. It's sad he's choosing Trump over decency and country and family.

On the other 2025 thread someone posted if it all goes through, her family would lose $1000- $2000 per MONTH! casii We have way too many veteran friends who are in the MAGA camp. My brain still can not understand why any military/veteran would support that orange skin sack of bullshit but I’ve made sure to explain to all of them about Project 2025 That old adage “Money Talks”? That’s made them sit up and take notice. Eliminating concurrent receipt of retirement and disability pay will cost us $2000.00 a month and we aren’t the only ones in that same situation (my DH is rated 100% disabled from military service) If you know a disabled veteran who supports Trump I highly recommend telling them about this. Getting thru on other issues can be like banging your own head against a brick wall. If the veteran is rated 40% or higher disabled, they’ll be losing somewhere between $1000-2000 a month. Not a small amount by any means

That’s who will be affected with congruent retirement pay and va pay. Once you’re 40% disabled, your retirement and va pay split, giving the retiree more money. That’s what they are targeting. Because my DH is 100% disabled he will lose $2000 a month. We’re lucky that when we planned our retirement before my DH was rated 100%. Even saying that, losing $2000 a month will be a nasty blow. If it happens at least we’re prepared. There will be a lot of veterans who won’t be that rely heavily on that congruent pay structure

just wanted to say that we all have a stake in what the govt does and finding your father's sweet spot is smart.
That's why whenever anyone wants me to vote for that useless dangerous man, I only say "I'm sorry. I have enormous respect for our prisoners of war and would consider it a slap in the face of anyone who was or will be a POW to vote for him."
It doesn't really change anyone's mind but it makes for some long awkward moments.
