Per CNN, I am now out of 'free articles' and they want $6.99 a month to allow me to read content on their site. What I'm trying to find out is how many articles are free? Is it a monthly max? An all time max? I've searched and I can find nothing on the limits.
Has anyone else run into this? We do not have cable so I read CNN articles on-line occasionally. Mostly I read the NYTimes where I do have a paid subscription.
UPDATE: I tried something I saw on Twitter. If you click on the 'pay with credit card' option they give you, you get a message that they are just looking at new ways to support journalism. Then you can go on to your article. I don't know if this means they are going to add a subscription and they just want to see how many people will pay or what. I would not have paid.
Based on the Tweets I found, this little test has been around at least a couple of months.

I look at CNN a lot bc its not blocked on my work PC, and I haven't seen this... yet. But today I did get the "puzzle" to prove I am a human, which I've never seen before.

Politico did the same thing. I guess I'm doing too much doomscrolling...
I can still look at cnn on computer, just not on my phone.

I don’t look there often but it seems to be the new norm. Either they want money or you have to sign up with an email. Nope sorry. I haven’t had that happen yet with cnn that I remember.

If we aren’t willing to pay for real journalism, real journalism will disappear from our lives.
The industry is already in crisis and things aren’t getting any better.

Which is why I have a NYTimes subscription. So if CNN restricts access, I will just stay there. CNN tends to be prompter with news. CNN also makes money from cable.

I received that message saying I had exceeded my allotted free articles too. There was a button to sign in. I clicked on that and to my surprise, I already had an account. I think I signed up to get the top 5 news items sent to my email months ago. I tried to sign in and it worked right away and I finished my article. I checked to make sure I was not paying for the site without being aware of it. I could not find anything that showed a pay account and I checked my bank also. It isn’t that I would not pay, it is just that I don’t want to be charged without my knowledge.

Why not give them an email? Just make a throwaway one. I use Hotmail for that purpose, and keep my main one for real stuff.

Odd. I have the CNN app on my phone and so far have not received the message. I had no idea there was such a thing as a subscription to CNN.

my workaround that is to right click your mouse until a menu pops up. click "INSPECT", then the settings wheel icon at the top. scroll down until you see "DEBUGGER" then click "DISABLE JAVA SCRIPT". works every time. i do that for the NY Times too. the worst that will happen is that some photos may not show but the articles are there.

I don't think there is a subscription service...yet. I think they are just testing the waters to see how many people would try to pay.
