hire someone to rehang the two doors that we replaced before moving in that we painted and DH hung but wasn't able to do so correctly so they don't actually close all the way. And hopefully hire someone to replace the lightbulbs in our stairway light with longlastin LED bulbs because I'm tired of not having a light in the stairway and no one here is comfortable enough on ladders to change them.

I am on my summer break, and there was a little "extra" on this week's pay cheque.
It would be great to use some of it for something around the house.

The sad thing is, these days $1000 won’t buy you much for a home improvement project. We spent very close to that on flooring for two rooms in our house from Costco that was on sale a few weeks ago. We already have all the tools to install it and will do the work ourselves.

I feel like I'm at a point now where there really are no "under a grand" jobs. Which kills me, because I have huge tasks that need doing, but that I don't want to spend a huge amount on.
I have a savings, but I don't want to eat a 15 or 20 grand chunk out of it, then an expensive emergency pop up. I almost feel like I could save 50K specifically for house projects, spend it redoing the bathroom and/or kitchen, then the next month have a massive financial emergency in the family in which that money would be instrumental in fixing.

$1000 isn’t much. Couldn’t even pain the inside of our house for that, so I’d say maybe fix our front yard landscaping.
We have the stacked stone with mortar around our flowerbed and trees, and they have all split in at least two places, and the repairs we’ve had done don’t look that great.
If that was too much, a new front door, and side window.

Oh, I know that $1000 won't get you very much.
I am in Canada, so it will get me even less!
Usually, I save up for the big things (roof, furnace, AC, bathroom...) but this is "extra" $ that I can spend on a "want", not a "need".

That's what I had to spend to get 2 of our giant trees thinned out in the spring. It was worth it after our first storm and so many people around us had fallen branches though. DH would say to repaint our bedroom/bath and get a new ceiling fan. We do all the work ourselves, so it's just time and supplies. Holy crap a gallon of paint has gotten high though! It’s amazing how much a gallon of paint is. I used Sherwin Williams when I did our living room/hall/entry/stairs. It was 2 gallons of primer and 4 gallons of paint, plus two trim colors. It was over $400 for just the paint and I got it on sale. You definitely need to buy it on sale. And I did all of the painting myself. |

I would do general handyman stuff - I need a couple of wall switches replaced, a smoke alarm replaced and a transition piece installed between my office and the hallway. Also some paint touchups here and there.

I want to know where these people are shopping when they say buy a new front door. We have a door with one sidelight and even five years ago when we rebuilt our cabin, the cost for a basic door like that *started* around $3K. We ended up getting one from a builders outlet place that sells overstocks, scratch & dent or returned items that were ordered in the wrong size, windows with a broken pane, etc. and even there the similar door we bought for our cabin was still around $1500. Our neighbors at the lake did a rebuild last year similar to what we did and they had to scale back their plans by close to 1/3 because the cost of building materials had gone up so much just since they had their plans initially drawn up. It’s insane. |

New kitchen counter tops and sink. I’m surprised at what you all can do with $1k. I was thinking “buy a rug”. It all depends really on what materials you are using and what your perspective is on costs. We did the counters (kitchen, bathroom, and a tiny one that holds a small TV) plus the table in our camper with laminate and it was $1400. I would like to put the same exact counter in my kitchen. I suspect I could do it for under $2000. My neighborhood home values would not support granite/marble countertops. We haven't done it because we have had a ton of debate over what we'd like to do/what we can afford to do/what absolutely is minimum needs for our kitchen. For us, $2000 isn't an insignificant amount of money. There will definitely not be a $40,000 kitchen remodel in my future. Those countertops were the most expensive part of remodeling our camper. Not even the brand new subfloor cost as much. Of course, Jeremy did all the work too. We are DIYers. But depending on kitchen size and materials used, a counter could be had for $1000. |

We got one of those and I swear the soil had spores in it for the first few weeks I had to remove mushrooms twice a day. It was bizarre. The organic raised bed soil from Costco. I like the bed and like that it’s easier to get to plants than in the ground. I had a lot of seedlings so still needed to water from the top. Still waiting for some seeds to sprout and just about to give up on them and try some others. You obviously can’t put tomato cages as deep as you would if not for the reservoir but so far they are working but they haven’t gotten that big yet. |

Replacing kitchen counter tops and doing the labor yourself just seems hard to me - and surprising you can do it (plus a new sink - including install?) for under $1k. But it’s great people can do that. |

I would have my loft painted. It’s a light yellowish cream. I would have it painted white to brighten it up in here or a light grey maybe.
