Good morning and Happy 4th to our USA peas.
This am I'm going to the store for a quick run and then back home. The heat is just punishing and we're not due for a reprieve until early next week. ICK!
So, I'll be on my video game and puzzle. Dh will be sitting at his puter, too.
Dinner is chicken sandwiches in the air fryer and tater tots, made in the toaster oven that is in our laundry room until this heat wave is done.
What's on your menu?
What are you doing today?
Wishing everyone a happy, lovely day!

Happy 4th to all the USA Peas! I'm thinking the very un-4th-like meal of spaghetti and meatballs. No grilling today. DS comes up tomorrow so I'll be getting things ready for his visit.

I'm having a slow day today. We did not get home until midnight which was 3 hours past our bedtime. 😂 And I drank way too much wine. 🤣 So today is moving slow and I don't feel so hot. But we have no plans. I'm going to shower here soon and then maybe pull out my quilt. Although I got a yarn delivery yesterday and my new pattern was released on Monday. I feel like I want to jump into that. But I need to print the pattern. I need it to have a paper print.

Happy 4 th of July to you all!
We had a lovely barbeque with my brother and SIL to celebrate my mom’s birthday. We don’t see them much so it was nice to just sit and chat.
We, too, are hiding in the house due to the heat. I’m doing some laundry and a bit of cleaning since it’s too hot to be outside.
Supper will be leftover salads and grilled hotdogs.

We’re hoping to have ribs today but the igniter on my oven is broken and we can’t get the screw out to replace it. I suggested DS use the toast/convection oven. He’s frustrated and I’m having a tough day so it’s not going well. I went to the store for corn on the cob this morning and I’ll make cole slaw. DS doesn’t like mayonnaise so he’ll have baked beans.

We are smoking a pork butt and will have pulled pork sandwiches with cole slaw mix on top, Spaghetti Salad (the one from the Salad Supreme bottle- and with min farfalle, not spaghetti) a bit of store bought potato salad, and baked beans.

It’s not a holiday by here, obviously, but I am still doing almost nothing. My cleaner was here this morning, so I shut myself in my craft room and crocheted while watching craft videos on YouTube while she was here. After lunch I went shopping. I still haven’t heard back from either of my doctors, which I guess means that they haven’t decided on what happens next, or are still getting things scheduled. Not much I can do about it, so I am trying not to think too much about it all.
Tonight is vegetarian night and we are having stuffed aubergine. The recipe I am (sort of) following calls it Greek, but it didn’t have any Greek herbs and did have sultanas and chilli, so I feel it’s more middle eastern. It all smells fabulous, so I hope it will also taste good.

jeremysgirl, I have no idea what I was or was not thinking. So, I sort of fixed the date. Oops. I hope you feel much better as the day goes fwd, so that you can quilt or crochet. sueg, worrying doesn't change the outcome one way or the other. You have a great attitude. It's been a bit of a storm for you and I'm going to vote for the sun to shine on you and your family.

sueg , worrying doesn't change the outcome one way or the other. You have a great attitude. It's been a bit of a storm for you and I'm going to vote for the sun to shine on you and your family. I have just posted on another thread, where people were talking about sayings they dislike, and one that came up was ‘it is what it is.’ I actually have been using this about my situation a lot lately. I don’t like that I have a tumour, even a benign one, and I don’t like the idea of brain surgery, but it has to happen. To me ‘it is what it is’ sums it up perfectly for me.

What's on your menu?
What are you doing today? Today is an easy, grazing day.
I bought:
Hotdogs (to microwave), and buns.
A rotisserie chicken (the store did the cooking for me!)
An assortment of fruit. Berries, peaches, apples, bananas, etc.
Cheese spread & crackers
Tortilla chips and salsa
cheeseballs
mini donuts
Nothing I have to cook, because it's just too hot.

Not fresh herbs.

I still have not made it out of my pj's. I took some ibuprofen a few hours ago and laid down. It wasn't quite sleep though because Jeremy is outside doing a house project. He ripped off some siding to replace a broken board. So he is screwing and nailing and sawing. I still feel yucky. I'm going to put on a pot of coffee and go shower. Jeremy's family is talking about the reunion weekend. And they are having a hibachi guy come out and do a show and cook the food. I told them Jeremy would be having it but not me. The response was, you can just have veggies. I was like yeah, but butter... The hibachi always cooks the rice and veggies with a ton of butter. I told them not to worry about me. We will have the camper and I will have fridge and freezer. So I'm happy to provide my own stuff. Everybody gets pissy. I'm tired of everyone dragging on what I choose to eat. Why does it bother people so much? I made this vegan chocolate pie yesterday it got rave reviews from those who ate it. and vegan phobia from one person at the BBQ yesterday. I don't care. It was an extra piece for me to have for breakfast. 😂 thevegan8.com/vegan-chocolate-cream-pie/I'm just saying it seems like a lot of other people have more issues with food than I do.

Why does it bother people so much? ime it's a combination of food=love and they feel like you're rejecting their food and thus their love AND that they see your way of eating as a criticism of their own. You keep on doing your thing - your food looks delicious and if you're happy and healthy, then it's a them problem. (((Hugs))) Happy Fourth to those celebrating! Happy Thursday to the rest of you! DD17 is grilling burgers and sausages if the rain holds off - if not, she'll cook them inside. We have corn and watermelon and I'm going to make salsa and maybe brownies

The person hiring the hibachi guy could ask if they have a vegan option, but Im sure they never even considered that. Im not sure that they use real butter anyway- at the high temps they use, butter would burn. So, if you were so inclined, you could ask the chef about that. And if you prefer to eat your own food, that is perfectly fine as well! I do think it is funny how many people say that veg or vegan people should bring their own food, but then get pissy when that person says they will bring their own food. And ultimately, people are always uncomfortable with anything outside the norm- most people are omnivores and dont understand or want to understand why someone would be vegetarian or vegan. Unlike some vegans, I know you arent trying to convert anyone or acting holier than thou about eating vegan. People see enough of that to be suspicious of any vegans. Dont let them bother you. If you want to talk to the chef about ingredients, then do it. If you want to bring your own food, then do that. They will get over it. Or they won't. It doesnt really matter which way they go- that's on them

the high today is 70 on my side of town.. but there is a west breeze off the ocean and the fog is hugging the coast..
sorry for all those suffering in the heat.

jeremysgirl - I have a really good Greek herb mix that I brought home from our last vacation and added to the recipe. I also definitely have the required herbs to make a decent Greek mix. I was just surprised that a recipe called ‘Greek stuffed Aubergines’ didn’t actually have any Greek herbs or seasoning in it. Even with my additions, it was a bit bland, so I’ll be making changes or finding a new recipe, because I love aubergines and I love Greek flavours.

Linda and littlemama I have been bending over backwards not to offend anyone. I am not remotely interested in converting anyone. I just did this to see what would happen to my blood work numbers. I know sometimes for me food is love too. I'm having to work my brain out of that mindset. Or at least change it around to my food change is loving myself. I took a lentil burger to their house yesterday with my own bun and Jeremy cooked it. And I made a nice big salad for everyone to share. All but one of the people there ate my food and raved about it. One was just like, I'm all about beer and beef. Well ok. We had fully planned to go to a restaurant. But they wanted us to come out on their aunt and uncles boat. I was a nervous wreck about bringing my own food because I'm getting so much blowback. I told them both (the friend and her aunt) how grateful I was that they were understanding. I'm just saying that I've really learned some lessons with this about how I will approach other people with dietary restrictions. I will never take offense to anyone bringing their own food to my house. tmarschall I linked the recipe above.

Happy 4th to all who celebrate!
We are having lots of family over including from out of state. We are grilling brats and chicken. I'm making a vegetable side dish from the garden, my SIL is bringing a green salad and my niece a pasta salad. I have tortilla chips, fresh salsa and fresh guacamole. And for dessert my fake trifle with strawberries and blueberries.

I have been bending over backwards not to offend anyone. I am not remotely interested in converting anyone. I just did this to see what would happen to my blood work numbers. I wasn't implying that I thought you were criticising or trying convert - more that some people take other people choices that are different from their own as a criticism even when it's a case two different but equally fine choices. My mother was like that - anything I did that was different that how she did things was me criticising the way she did it. When in reality, I was just making the choices I thought were best for me and my family.

I was agreeing with you not trying to be contrary. And yes, I am fully aware of people like your mother. Perhaps she is a long lost sister of my mother. 😂 I just didn't expect food to be such a volatile issue. My response was more disbelief. Either that or there really are some crazy ass critical vegans people have come across. But I'm doubting many of these people have ever run across a vegan.

I'm just saying it seems like a lot of other people have more issues with food than I do. They do ... and a lot of people are afraid of things they are not familiar with ... you are an adventurous eater, so am I, but so many people are not ... don't let it bother you at all ... you are doing great!

I went to Denny's with my mum and Emma for breakfast this morning and then hit Costco and the grocery store ... now I am relaxing until my mum comes over after Bingo. She is staying for dinner ... I have a ham steak and corn on the cob but I don't know if that's what I feel like ... we'll see ... So I have an honest-to-goodness-actually-going-to-happen date tomorrow night with a really good looking, gainfully employed, guy my age! He even chose the restaurant and made the reservation ... and chose a swanky place! . I have been wanting to go there for a long time ... now I'm stressing about what I should wear Luckily, it is Stampede week here in Calgary so people will be pretty casual ... I bought some gorgeous suede cowboy boots the other day that I think I will wear. I'll let you know on Saturday how it goes!

And I'll tell you my good friend Wendy is the worst cook in the whole world. 😂 I have suffered through many a meal at her place. The cool thing is she can joke about it. And we try as hard as we can to schedule our get togethers so I am the one hosting/cooking. But like she is allergic to nuts. So I always take that into account.

sueg, I say "it is what it is" all the time. We can't change things that are out of our control, but we don't have to succumb to them. I'm working on that every day. I am the queen of "I cannot eat your food". Something that I've done for years is to not bring my processed crap food to events that include food. I do get hungry and it's unfair that I don't feed myself while everyone is eating. I have been way too self conscious about that. So, I'm adopting a new attitude. That means that I don't have to answer to anyone about why I'm not eating other people's food. It also means that I completely understand when someone can't eat something that I cook or bake. Last weekend I was at a restaurant and the waiter was a nice guy, but could not understand why I wouldn't order food. He was almost pestering me. Finally, I just blurted out that I cannot eat normal food and I hate it. Really, I shouldn't have to explain my diet to anyone. Nor should you. Bring your own food and if someone starts to pick on you for it then just change the subject or tell them to let you eat in peace. People who can eat whatever they want might not understand how awful it is not to be able to enjoy even the simplest food. Now I'm ranting. I want a salad. Period.

Oh scrapmaven I'm so sorry i ranted like a big fucking baby. I can't even imagine what you must go through. That is terrible. My heart goes out to you. It really is no one's business. And truthfully I don't even know how you do it. I'm a fat girl who likes to cook and bake and eat and I feel like food is one of life's pleasures. Ob viously you make the best of a bad situation. I really feel for you. screw that waiter. I think you are even a hero for cooking your DH dinner every night when you can't eat it. ❤️

I grew up in a family that all had food allergies.. to major ingredients we never went out to eat, maybe a couple of times to seafood place. we never went to potlucks, we almost never went to anyone's house for dinner.. and we had to read the packages completely.. and of course most everything was made at home. in the 1950's and 60's, people really didn't believe in food allergies.
so I feel your pain. we would pack our own food whenever we went places. my dh couldn't hardly believe how restricted our family eating was til he got to know me. because my dad took such great care.. he lived to 95.
I did learn to ignore people's food choices and tastes.. an uncommon experience.

jeremysgirl, do NOT apologize. You have a right to bring your own, healthy food. I was voicing that ITA w/you and that I get it. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. It's never a one-upping contest. I've just learned that I have to be comfy in my own skin and that means trying to let go of guilt or negativity, because I can't eat what everyone at the table is eating. You're adopting a vegan lifestyle and the people who love you don't have to cater to you, but I would hope that they would support your choices w/o judgement. Bring what you're comfortable eating. A good friend has lunches at her house every now and then. Now she always has the boring crackers that I can eat, so that I'm not so left out. I really appreciate her kindess, but I also let her know that I'm happy to bring my own food.
