I started to watch this show (documentary about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders) last night after reading the favorite shows thread here. I am on episode 6 and drawn in, but also completely appalled at how the girls are treated. Someone suggested we have a separate thread and I thought that was a great idea. If you watched, what are your thoughts?

This is local to me as I'm in DFW and had thought about watching it. Maybe I'll have to start this weekend.

For anyone like me who doesn’t know what “DCC” is or what this references, it’s a documentary (I think?) about the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

DCC Making the Team had many seasons on the CMT channel. Not sure if the Netflix show is the same. The show is hilarious for all the wrong reasons. The cherry on top is a fat Kelli Finglass telling these girls to lose weight. 🤣😂🤣 I mean look in the mirror lady.

I used to watch Making the Team (pretty sure that was what it was called) and remember being shocked both at how little they made and how my money and effort they were expected to put into their appearances (despite not being compensated for that). I also remember the constant weight pressure.

I've never paid any attention to the cheerleaders and can't say that I idolized them while growing up or anything like that. I also haven't watched the CMT show but in this season I keep having similar thoughts. Like, in the opening episode they cut a veteran because her face was fuller than the year before (at least that was what they showed). I wouldn't call Kelli fat but I would hope that women who have experience with aging would be more forgiving with people's looks and know that we all have good days, bad days, our bodies change, etc. And then Charlotte sitting there in her fancy office with her expensive clothes talking about the girls do it for the love of the game and what they get from being a DCC, which seemed to be meant to explain why they didn't deserve more pay. Shameful. None of them (Charlotte, Kelli or Judy) seem to have much empathy for what the women go through at any point in the process. I understand that they have high expectations but you can do that while also not demeaning people.

I was the original poster about this show on the other thread and I am glad to see someone else started a new one. I am about to head to a party, but I will be back later. I will say one thing before I go, i had Thunderstruck stuck in my head for at least two days. One of the best parts of the series.

I'm just finishing up the first episode and there is a dancer from my town, Coppell Tx - a suburb of Dallas.

I also remember the constant weight pressure. The DCC are actually one of the higher paid cheerleading groups. They make like $75,000 a year. Not bad for a part time job. Average pay for cheerleaders is $22K.

I actually think that if you want me to put the amount of money into grooming myself that those women are required to spend and expect me to have the flexibility for performance that they have to have, $75,000 isn't much, and definitely not much for what is supposed to be the most elite group of women at the specific thing they do. I really feel like it's a salary that reflects that they are supposed to feel honored to be selected to be part of the DCC, and that they are supposed to feel like they are being paid in cache. I do get what you are saying. I do! But I don't actually think it's that much for what they are required to do (and $22,000 is insane). If you want my opinion, it's that the DCC take advantage of the fact that these are women who, as girls, were conditioned to spend a gazillion dollars on participating in dance and cheer.

my sister who had daughters in dance knows Tina Kalina, a former DCC and the mom of Victoria who made the team. They keep showing my town and it's pretty cool. I'm enjoying the series so far.

This was my post on the favorites thread: I was surprised so many were soooooo religious. I felt bad for the one girl they ultimately cut b/c she was... too short? I tried out for the Rockettes in 1999. They have a 5'6" height minimum. I'm sorry but I feel like this is something the DCC should have in place if they are ultimately going to cut a great dancer because they felt she always looked a step behind...? And then they said "Oh maybe we should have a height requirement in place". YA THINK?!?! This is after that girl already tried out last year, moved to Texas and based the last year of her life around this. NOW you tell her she's too short? That annoyed me. I am that TikTok you see going around that says "My toxic trait is after 3 spicy margs and some stretching thinking I could nail this dance" and they show them doing Thunderstruck. LMAO So many friends sent that to me! Only... I *know* I could nail it! (told you its my toxic trait haha). I was captain of my kick line team... I would like to try my hand at kicking on the Dallas field. I found a bunch of their IGs last night and I see Victoria actually went through with retiring and she moved to NY just a few days ago!

I already posted my thoughts on the other thread. But let me add several paragraphs more since no one I know IRL it's watching this. And yes I did see many episodes of the previous show about Making The Team or whatever it was called. I watched a couple more episodes last night. The girls are so sweet, or at least very good at presenting themselves that way. I could never keep that up.
I agree if there is a height restriction, make that a thing BEFORE they try out.
I find the whole thing ridiculous on the one hand, and adorable on the other. They look so good out there dancing in unison, smiling, pretty, and then they're super sweet to everyone they meet in person. Watching the little girls' faces light up when they are greeted by the pretty ladies is both super sweet and kind of, IDK, has me thinking it's all wrong to be so fixated on how pretty they are. DCC is still run by white women with 80s ideals of beauty left over from their heydays.
But then again it's human nature to want to look at attractive people.
When I was little, I idolized the DC Cheerleaders, Miss America, Charlie's Angels, Playboy bunnies (like, the pretty ladies they showed on TV at the clubs, not the naked centerfolds), SI Swimsuit models, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley... You get the idea. Was that healthy? But was it harmful?
Suspicious lack of brown girls. Not total lack, but I think you get the feel for what they're looking for and it's 1980s Texas standards meets Hef's girlfriends from the 2000s. I didn't see any Asian girls at all, probably "too short". Are there Latina girls? Not clear.
All that to say, I particularly love Reece (despite her practically brainwashed love of Jesus and her apparent blindness to what an incredible dork she's gonna get hitched to--I hope she wakes up quickly bc their romance feels like the start of a Dateline special about a repressed Christian nerd who eventually kills his wife) and Kelsey (a nurse! For a special needs child! Who loves the Lord! She's practically too good for the earth, let alone this organization).
And I AM Kleine: where, indeed, is my fucking ornament? You withered old bitch? And that would have been the end of me. 🤣🤣

Or they could make a height limit or range instead of a minimum height. The taller girls throw things off just as much as shorter girls would. I was happy to see that Victoria left and I hope that she finds happiness. I do worry that she is going from one toxic environment to another if she is going to try out for the Rockettes, though. I am not really sure what to make of Reece. She seems fake and her baby voice and religious comments bug me. But she seems like a good person. I had similar thoughts as Zee regarding her boyfriend but they did end up getting married so hopefully it is a good fit. The situation with Klein also stood out to me. I mean, Kelli got on Klein for being "selfish" and talked about putting others first in all situations. But does Kelli actually do that herself? Is that a Texas/Southern expectation for women?

I think I spent too much time involved in the dance community, because the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way in this season was the big grand speech about how they don’t make very much money, but they’re honored to do it blah blah blah that lady pissed me off.
I loved the way they circled the wagons when the photographer was inappropriate with one of the dancers. You could see that Kelly and Judy were genuinely upset and I thought it was great that they didn’t even hesitate to pull her off the field.
I understand how the body type and weight conversations can sound, Especially when you lay it against today’s social climate regarding body. It’s odd to say that Kelly is being hypocritical to have conversations with the girls about their weight when she’s heavy herself. She’s not a cheerleader anymore, that’s not her role and she doesn’t have to cram herself into the DCC uniform. But when she was a cheerleader, she had to maintain her weight like everyone else.

She was probably immersed in that her whole life. She does seem like a genuinely nice person though. And yes, they got married on 4/20. 😂

I’m curious about their family dynamics since she seems very enmeshed with her mother but said her dad and brothers had never once been to one of her competitions or dance shows.

I think her relationship with her mother is part of the reason she can't connect with other people and she hasn't learned the skills to interact well with others. They seem a bit too dependent on each other.

I'm not wild about Victoria, she gives me Nancy Kerrigan vibes. I also think that type of work is toxic for her. She should do something less appearance-focused.

Well, Paramount+ has all the old seasons of Making the Team (which I have never watched) so I am watching season 16 which was filmed in 2021 for more cheer goodness. lol
That voice of Reese's is her real voice, imo. She reminds me a lot of my niece. Love the girl, but that really soft, baby-like voice is a lot and she is actually truly that nice in person. Its not an act. Me? I'm loud and swear and it's vastly different from the way I speak.

I used to watch Making the Team, so I was pretty excited to watch the documentary. I'm glad that Judy and Kelly were portrayed in the light that they deserve. The toxic behavior from both of them is appalling at times. And the comments from Charlotte Jones are so tone deaf.
