Our coat/shoe closet by the front door is stinky. I used to use those RENUZIT adjustable fresheners (they had an odor eliminator one that made the odor go away, not mask it); But they don't make it anymore. I recently tried an opened box of baking soda and it helped for only a week. Anything to recommend that truly works to eliminate the odor? Don't want to keep buying stuff that doesn't work as it will get $$$. Thanks!

Deodorize the shoes and leave them out in the hot sun. Also let your jackets hang outside in the fresh air.
Did anything that was damp get placed in there? I would make sure any shoes/jackets are dry before placing in a small closed space.

Ds sprays his shoes with Pet Odor Eliminator and that helps. (We call it Pet Killer, due to a misspoken request for it)

Activated charcoal works, but it must be activated charcoal. I would buy some and put it in little bags in each shoe. I had some little bags made for gifts that were a thin fabric with a drawstring top.

What is the source of the odor? It sounds like you need to eliminate the source. Wash all of the garments. Wash the shoes too, and then lay them out in the sun. If they can’t be washed, spray them with vodka or vinegar and lay them out in the sun. If the odor comes from the walls of an old house, wash the walls down with TSP and paint the closet with Kilz. Also consider that you could have a dead mouse in your walls.

I just don't want to smell feet every time I open the door.

Just stinky feet smell from sweating in the summer heat. Not a dead animal smell!

It's just me and I used to have a shoe closet that had stinky smell too. I used to use a portable air freshener that kind of worked but never seemed to get rid of the smell.

If the shoes are sweaty and damp when they are put in the closet, it’s going to stink because there’s likely not enough airflow for the shoes to thoroughly dry. You need to make sure the shoes are aired out and dry before putting them in the closet.

I haven't used it myself though.
I would also try a multifaceted approach. Spray the shoes/sandals with odor eliminator, open a box of baking soda in the closet, and maybe have those odor fighting sneaker balls in closed toe shoes.
Life is stinky. There is no shame in that. You just keep trying until you find something that works.
Also, if the flip flops are plastic and were inexpensive, you might want to toss them (and their stink) in the trash at the end of the season. Sometimes it's less cost to just buy new and get rid of the problem that way.

Keep a container of a product called Fresh Wave in the closet. It comes in gel version that absorbs orders. When the gel is gone be sure to replace or refill the container.

Dryer sheets in your shoes? I put them in my boots before I store them.

Wash all the shoes and use a foot powder like gold bond (brand name) in your socks/shoes. Sorry but it's the feet that are the problem.

I don't know where you live, but are the shoes ever in the ocean? Anything that's been in the ocean and doesn't get cleaned thoroughly will be super stinky.
I'd suggest letting the shoes dry completely before you put them in the closet. Buy cheap flip flops and sandals and replace them when they get stinky.

Read today that a dry, new tea bag put in the shoe will absorb the odors.
