My son's plug stopped working, and I can get (off brand) 2 plugs and 2 cords for the cost of one (Apple brand) plug on Amazon. Does it make a difference?

Yes! Apple stuff just works. I may have 1 or 2 cords that aren't Apple (thank you dh). They don't always work with the devices we have.

I wouldn’t run the risk of not using Apple. It’s a pain, given the cost but I’ve heard tales of the devices getting fried by non Apple accessories so I don’t trust them.

Don’t waste your money on off brands. In the end you’ll spend more money on the cheap stuff because you will replace more often BTDT.

I only have an iPhone, but I think the Apple brand charging cords are the crappiest. They fail so fast for me.
Anker is a great brand. I have also bought some really cheap stuff on Amazon. Some are garbage, and some work great. I have one type that I love. It is a red braided cord that has 4 ends. 2 lightning, 1 USB C, 1 Mini USB. I can charge pretty much everything with that cord! I keep those cords in my guest room with a long USB extension also.

I think the only Apple brand charging cord that I use is the one for my watch. My phone and iPad I use generic chargers that I bought from Amazon. I like them better for two reasons - they have the braided cords, so don’t fail at the point where the cord meets the USB bit, and I can get them on various lengths, from really short to carry in my bag for my portable charger, to 3m or more so I don’t have to be right beside the power outlet when charging.

we've use different cords, but I wasn't sure if the actual PLUG makes a difference.

I am probably an Apple fan girl, yet I will buy non-Apple cords and chargers. I haven’t had an Apple charger fail me yet, but we do have Anker brand power strips with USB connections and fast charging that we use in the office and my craft room. I like a charger in more than one room. They work great. I have also bought generic cords that work just fine.

we've use different cords, but I wasn't sure if the actual PLUG makes a difference. OK, so the one issue may be that some generic charger don’t have the same wattage as the Apple plug. Newer Apple products come with a fast charger. Just make sure you buy a plug with the same power or it may charge slower.

We have a wide assortment of charging cords, charging bricks, power strips with built in USB outlets, etc. Never had any issues with any of our devices. The only bricks that have failed were a couple of the small Apple phone plugs. The cords that fail fastest and wear out at the plug end have been the Apple ones. My favorite cords are the ones from Anker or Amazon Basics that have the braided cords. I like the really long 10’ cords the best. With Prime Days coming up next week there are bound to a great deals on multi packs of cords.

I use Anker or Native Union braided plugs for my phone and ipad. the laptop has it's own apple cord and that one does work better. The generics CAN charge the laptop, but they're slower and it doesn't hold the charge as long. The watch has it's own apple cord but it came with the watch and I've never replaced it.
I've used the cheaper cords, but they break too easily and you wind up spending just as much money on the replacements. I won't get anything that isn't braided as those are stronger

I never use Apple plugs and cords. Not on purpose, I just tend to get the cheap stuff. My nephew swears the Apple stuff charges faster, and I believe him, but my cheap cords lasted a lot longer than the original Apple stuff I had. I use these Yunsong braided cords and they are awesome. I put them in my families Christmas stockings every year.
I've never had a problem with an off brand not working with my phone.
Maybe I should buy an Apple set and try it again. I might be missing out.

but I wasn't sure if the actual PLUG makes a difference. The size of plug makes a huge difference, especially with any newer devices. I have found the new phones need a minimum of 20watt. If you use anything less than that it takes forever to charge. I also learned recently that if you try to charge the newer devices with a cord straight from the Mac or laptop it will also take longer. Those need to be charged from the wall with a minimum 20watt plug.

For the charging brick, I’d check what wattage it is. And how new is his phone? Newer stuff usually can charge fast - with the right wattage of brick.
I’d get either Apple or Anker.

I would recommend using the Apple charging block because that is the correct charger for the device.
Smart phones and tablets are powered by lithium ion batteries - and the number one safety thing with lithium ion batteries is to use the charger recommended by the manufacturer; it really doesn’t matter whether it is a watch, a smart phone, or an electric vehicle.
Sure, the consequences of a phone catching fire is nowhere near as severe as if a car catches fire but it is still a reasonably significant risk. Lithium-ion batteries are really not something to casually mess around with.
Is saving a few dollars worth the risk of your phone’s battery igniting while being charged overnight while you’re asleep?

YES about the braided cords. I'm an Apple fan but I cynically believe they don't make the braided cords so they can sell more cords as they fray sooner. I bought some from sweguard via Amazon that were well reviewed and they have held up really well and I haven't had any issues with them at all.

He has an iphone 15, he got it last Oct, so it's not even a year old. My kids drive me crazy bc they drag their cords and bricks all over the house, so I feel like their cords/bricks are constantly getting damaged or lost/misplaced.... where I set up one charging station and set my devices there.

Apple cords are expensive and fail very quickly. I won’t pay 5x as much for garbage cords.
