It has been a while since we have had a new mattress. Am I understanding correctly that if I buy a "platform" metal bed frame (so one with many many bars across it), does that mean I dont need a box spring?
Also, why are so many metal frames not on casters any more?? Do people not move their beds?

If you buy a metal frame you should get a box spring or your mattress won't be as comfortable as it should. If you buy a platform bed then you wouldn't buy a box spring, but your bed will be about a 1/4 firmer than if you had a box spring and metal frame.
Now that I've told you about that, I highly recommend a sleep number bed. Yes, it's $$$$, but man will you sleep like a rock. I love mine. We have a split king and I have my own zip code at night. We can each alter our own firmness/softness, it goes up and down and as they will tell you, if your spouse annoys you then you can fold him into a taco. Now they have mattresses that allow you to cool down or warm up, too. I love it so much that I went back and bought the pillow a few months later. They didn't try to upsell us or give us scripts. It was a really helpful purchase.

They call it a mattress platform. We arent buying a platform bed, where the frame has a headboard and a footboard, but just the bed frame if that makes sense. So with that, do I need a box spring or no? Furniture websites are the absolute worst as far as giving information!

I have a day bed, it has wooden slats across the platform-base. I have a inexpensive mattress on it (average quality....definitely not >> best quality), plus a 3-inch memory foam topper. No box spring. For me personally, it's very comfortable.
I think mattress strength and support, depends on individual needs (body, back, neck, knee and hip.... support and comfortability levels). I prefer softer....hence the memory foam topper.
I have a hard time sleeping on a really firm-hard mattress.

Make sure you are happy with the distance from the top of the mattress to the floor, regardless of the type of mattress you end up with. I am currently sleeping on a mattress and box spring base that is currently not on the metal wheeled frame, but sitting on the floor. This is due to how it was unloaded from the moving pods and the inability for the movers to follow my instructions. I will ultimately be putting it on the wheeled base, which I can now see in the garage but can’t yet get to yet. I am waiting until I have all of the rest of the big items, washer/dryer, fridge, etc., ready to move into place so that I only have to hire people once.
The reason you should make sure you are happy with the distance from the top of the mattress to the floor is the ease, or lack of ease, of getting out of the bed. I struggle every single time I get out of this bed because it is too low, making it harder to pull my ancient self up and out of the bed. It isn’t as bad as it was when sleeping in the cot that I used until my furniture was delivered, but it is still low enough to be very difficult to get up from.

I got a metal platform as you describe, no boxspring, and new mattress. I find it very comfortable. I actually had to look hard for a traditional (not foam) mattress, but I really am pleased with the one I got. I inherited an antique wooded bedframe which is actually not exactly standard bed size (it's that old) and fortunately I was able to find a platform that fits inside the wood frame. The thickness of the mattress puts the bed a little bit higher than I would choose, but as I'm tall, it's not a problem getting in or out, just not quite optimally aligned with my bedside tables.

My mattress is very high. Like 10"+. The metal frame is over 16" high. No way could there be a box spring. I did not pick them or buy them. Someone bought them for me while I was hospitalized.

It was a really helpful purchase. Same here! I haven't tried the pillow though. Might have to do that. It seems I've tried every other pillow in the world still searching for the perfect one. We did save money by getting our adjustable bases somewhere else. We actually ordered them through Walmart but that was a few years ago. I still kick myself that I didn't buy a sleep number for the guest bedroom. It's upstairs and I need to recarpet. How much easier it would have been to move that out of the way rather than the heavy mattress and box springs I put up there. That's another advantage to Sleep Number. They are super easy to move out of the way if you need to redo flooring, rearrange your furniture or move.

I specifically chose her because Russian Blues have less of the Fel D 1 protein and I’m (ironically) allergic to cats. I’d go to the ends of the earth and get whatever treatment I need for her. Do you happen to have any Russian Blue photography tips? It’s difficult to get an accurate photo of her because the silver tips only show if the light hits her a certain way. She comes across as a dark gray cat on most photo or video. When she’s in the right light she looks like an entirely different silvery cat. Also, the kitty in your avatar is adorable! I like his markings.

Thank you. The little guy in my avatar is very mischievous and that's what I love most about him. He plays w/me by leaving certain cabinets open. He's a goofball.
I don't have any tips for taking photos of Russian Blues. I'm a terrible photographer. Russian Blues are a very hypoallergenic breed, but some people are still very allergic. They're also very talkative. My kitty is very vocal. He's also a very lovable lap cat. Both kitties are lovable, but my Russian Blue is affectionate. He gives kitty hugs. Those are the best.
We're very lucky to be cat people.

DD has a mattress and a platform slat base it's very comfortable. I've never had wheels on my bed, but it is high enough to get the vacuum under it most of the way.

I have a platform where you can raise lower head/feet and only have my mattress on it and it's too high. I need a step stool to get into bed and I hate it. Thinking about tossing the whole set up and getting a sleep number bed or something. It gives new meaning to having to climb into bed.
