Back story…feel free to skip: I am so mad at myself. I ordered some wine glasses for an annual friends weekend with the name of where we have it. I had the great idea of having everyone’s name on theirs so we could tell our glasses apart. I thought it would be easier to create an order with the main personalization and then edit each glass to include the name. Needless to say I used the wrong order and ended up with no names. I already had to pay for expedited processing and shipping so there is no reordering or ordering anything online to correct it.
QUESTION - please help: I am looking for different colored vinyl or some other product that I can put (temporarily) on the glasses to distinguish one from another? All I have to cut is punches and dies (a manual cutting machine) but would like to use those for fun shapes etc. I need to get the product in person and all I have is a basic Michaels and a really small Joanne’s. Any ideas on what I can use or look for?
ETA - These are stemless wineglasses so it is like the charms that were used but something that will stick to the glasses.

I just searched stickers for wine glasses on amazon and a bunch of things are showing. There's stickers, markers, suction cup type stickers, and charms.

Michael’s, Joanne’s, and even my dollar store carry the vinyl that is typically cut on the electronic machines, but since you have a manual cutter, that would work with any dies you have also. I’m not sure a punch would do a clean job, but it will work with the manual rollers or the old press type of cutters.
The nice thing about the dollar store stuff is you don’t need to purchase a large roll of all the same color. The dollar store near me is in pretty bad shape compared to another of the same store in a different city, but they did have at least 20 or 30 types of vinyl.

I guess I was immediately thinking…could I cut some vinyl without an electric machine and would it cling? But didn’t want to buy it if it wouldn’t stick. Hahaha. I always have to make things more difficult than they really are.

It's fairly easy to cut it with a punch or even scissors. You can get it by the sheet in various colors or by the roll. Use a coupon if it's not on sale already.

Or you can buy Armour Etch and cut stencils of each name out of clear contact 'paper' for the names.
And yes I have cut letters from vinyl to put words on shadow box picture frame glass...

Yes, the sheets of Oracle vinyl from Michael's that mom suggested. Cricut vinyl would work too. ETA: Here is a link to the Target Cricut vinyl, which is a better price than at my Michaels. link

If you only want temporary try nail polish for names or just different colors.

Check to see if your local library has a design space... at ours it does have a silhouette and cricut.. it also has laser cutters and 3d machines...
They don't charge and there is someone there to help...

Vinyl lover here!
If you want to cut simple shapes with punches and dies and not have it be permanent you can use any adhesive vinyl you want. I use Oracal for longevity but any vinyl will work if you want to be able to peel it off.
No sticker vinyl is dishwasher safe. The heat and water will eventually make it peel.
Keep in mind if you’re doing larger shapes that the glass is curved so it may pucker.
Clean well with rubbing alcohol before putting the vinyl on to remove oils.
Use a transfer tape for designs that are intricate (other than basic circles, hearts, etc).
If you want to make something permanent, get armour etch and create a stencil and etch the glass. I’ve done lots of this too! Keep in mind the curve of the glass and don’t etch too close to the top because it’ll feel weird on your lips when drinking.
Cheap vinyl from dollar 25 tree will work for temporary as will Cricut vinyl (make sure it’s not iron on/HTV). You can get removable Oracal too but I’ve had no issues peeling permanent off- just takes more effort.
I usually get my good stuff from Joann’s and Michael’s or a local vinyl shop.
Hobby Lobby has vinyl but it’s on par with Cricut brand so I’d avoid it.
Of course share pics here please! ❤️

Oh! You can also draw on glass with sharpies and clean off with rubbing alcohol!

Thanks for all the tips seaexplore. I really appreciate them. I do want it to just be temporary for this weekend as that is probably the only time (until a weekend next summer) that all the glasses will be used together. But as long as I screwed up I thought it would be fun to have a vinyl sticker wine charm of sorts for each person. At first I was thinking same shape different colors, but if I can use a manual cutting machine it would be fun to find a shape that was fitting for each person. The glasses are cheap and I don’t think dishwasher safe. I probably will try and find something reasonably sized, just big enough so that you can tell at a glance your glass.

Each person can doodle their own glass. Also less prep for you! And less money spent. If they are glass and etched/lasered they should be dishwasher safe. What does the maker say about it?

The glasses are dishwasher safe but it does say to hand wash. As long as they last this weekend I am good. We have a dishwasher at our camp but don’t tend to use it so they should be okay for the weekend…anything after oh well. Hahaha

Just be sure you get adhesive vinyl and not HTV.

I’m on summer break June-August so I never mind during those months and am pretty quick. School year? Couple weeks. 😊

Paint pens will also work well. Not for the dishwasher, but they hold up with handwashing for quite a while.
You may need transfer tape to work with the vinyl. You cut out the shape, weed away any excess that you may not want (like the center in the middle of a “D”), then lay the transfer tape over the top and peel it from the non stick backing. It keeps the vinyl from wrinkling up and sticking to itself. I know some people use clear contact paper or Glad Wrap Press and Seal or even blue painters tape as well. Watch a video on how to use vinyl and you’ll understand.

You can just use alphabet stickers or fun clear summery stickers on the wine glasses. You probably have something in your stash that would work. The stickers will last a lot longer than the chalk/paint pens that get smeary when touched on glasses. You can then peel the sticker off later if you want to use the glasses plain (or with an autumn or winter theme later)
For the record, we've had coffee cups with plain ol' clear stickers from the craft store on them and they've survived multiple trips through the dishwasher. Same with plain old vinyl. Tumblers and wine glasses have gone through the dishwasher without any problems.
