Hey all, does anyone have a small portable room air cooler that they could recommend? Our house is three levels and basically three different climate zones. You can go from frozen to hell in just 28 steps. I'd love a small room cooler for my bedroom. Not looking for the window kind or one that needs air flow. TIA.
Update: It is currently cooling the upstairs. I went from checking all of my options and the ratings to "I'll take whatever you have in stock!" All of the 450 sf air conditioners were gone from our Home Depot's and Lowes. Found one at Best Buy and have it set for 70*. I just want to be cold for a bit.

I think to get the room cool you at least need one with the hose that goes out the window. We don’t have AC and rarely need it, so we have the rolling portable types for each bedroom. Something like this… Amazon Link. a.co/d/hbxndKQWe store them in the closets when not in use.

My aunt has a portable one and she loves it. She can get it out of the closet when she needs it as it's on wheels and doesn't have to coordinate having someone come over and get window units in the windows. It does need to be vented outside. I'm pretty sure they all do.
It's like the one linked but I'm not sure what brand she has, she got it on QVC.

My bedroom was on the front of my house, catching the hot California sun from mid afternoon to sundown. Additionally, the room had vaulted ceilings, which was a very positive thing for me, visually, when buying the home. But after being in it one summer, I realized there was zero insulation in the vaulted ceilings, making the front of my house, containing both the master bedroom and living room, both with double high vaulted ceilings feel like ovens all summer. And even having much larger vent openings installed when I replaced the duct work didn’t help at all. I ended up buying the portable unit and facing it toward the bed on full blast just to be able to stand going to bed in the master bedroom at night.

They all need to be vented to the outside. They kick off an incredible amount of heat and you won’t get anywhere if the heat isn’t vented. We used portable units in our bedrooms in our cottage in Belgium. We probably only used them for a week total over the summer, but it was lovely to be able to sleep.

Mine also has to be vented. I can't imagine having one that did not. The hot air has to go somewhere. It takes a little effort to install in that I have to put weatherstripping around the vent. I also have to make sure to put some foam in between the open window glass to keep wasps out. Once those are done, it works really well. I have a Hisense I bought at Lowes in 2020.
Surprisingly though I have not installed it this year despite the heat wave. We didn't get our house washed down until July and I have to wait until that is done. We put in new windows in the front of the house and that has helped insulate. I've found if I drop the overall AC by 1 degree and close the bathroom door (that room gets afternoon sun) the upstairs is cool enough with a fan. I may change my mind next week!

We just bought one this past weekend in preparation for the hurricane. Put it in the bedroom and ran it off the generator when we lost power.
As others have said, they really have to be vented through the window. But ours came with a rectangular insert that you put in the window and attach the hose to, so it's very simple to set up. I would assume they call come with that.
I love ours so much that I plugged it into the wall in the bedroom now that power is back, to be used when perimenopause is making me gross and sweaty at night. It delivers substantial cooling very quickly.

Our windows open horizontally and a hose might be a challenge. Will look into it.

They come with inserts that you slide in and hold the hose. The inserts can go horizontal or vertical.

On our local community FB page folks were talking about having a local plexiglass plastic place custom cut inserts for tricky windows.

That is kind of crazy! We have such powerful winds in the foothills that I might be a little nervous about that. I decided to put the air conditioner in the office window. Our office is attached to our bedroom.

I bought one on Amazon make 8 years ago. It was so noisy. I couldn’t sleep with it on. What are the new ones like? We got 3 wall-mounted heat pumps installed 4 years ago. With the rebates in Canada now (maybe just BC) they are practically free. I love ours.

We did something similar with our windows in Belgium. The windows opened completely on the side or hinged out at the bottom with a narrow opening on the top. There was a handle on the window that you turned like a door latch. We got rigid foam insulation and taped it into the opened window with it set to a narrow opening. We never had the foam blow out, but it did slip a few times. It wasn’t pretty, but the windows were on the upper level and not very visible from the street.

With the rebates in Canada now (maybe just BC) they are practically free. I love ours. It has three fan levels. The quietest one is still very noticeable, but I didn't have trouble sleeping through it. Our bedroom is actually two rooms and the air conditioner is in other room, so that helps. What is glorious is not waking up to the chatter of birds. We have a gang of 20+ turkeys that comes by every morning and gobbles for a good 5-30 minutes. We also have an army base not far away with trumpet calls starting at 6:25. I still woke up early, but none of those sounds. When the time comes to replace the home air conditioner, I'll get one that does zones.
