Since it’s so dead around here, thought I’d post a few threads. What would your response be to someone that tells you that? Backstory, I’m a liberal, living in red neck podunk red part of the state. Of course to them , liberals don’t read the Bible. I went to catholic college,Took classes on religion and the Bible. Do I still believe in the Bible and god? No. I’m agnostic. So what would be your response to a spirited conversation with acquaintances.

I can't imagine a conversation around here where someone would say it accusingly, like "what are you talking about? you should read the bible." I live in a blue bubble which is why I say I can't imagine how that would come up. But if it did I would probably say "I do, and I know a lot about the bible. What would you like to know?" Of course I did go to a very liberal seminary so anything I might think I know about the bible is probably suspect in their eyes anyway...

I probably would come back with a smartalec response like and what about you? Becasue I don't see you telling me to read the Bible is very Christian like.
But realistically, I would point out that you are very versed in the Bible due to your upbringing and education. I still would want to add, and just what do you want me to get out of reading the Bible?
Such a rude question.

"I have better things to do in hotel rooms." Its a good thing I just sat my coffee down when I read this, or it would have been on my keyboard. Great response.

I just don't see that as a question I'd be asked ever, either here in Germany or in Australia. Most people don't care about other peoples religious beliefs in either place - maybe Mormon or JW missionaries might ask you.
I'd just tell them that I do read the Bible, and that I don't need anyone else monitoring my reading habits, religious or otherwise.

Depends on the context. If they're trying to convince you of something in Leviticus, or that women should be submissive or forgo bodily autonomy, or to have the ten commandments posted in schools, I would return that they should re-read the Beatitudes from the sermon on the mount and this part of Jesus' greatest commandments: to love your neighbor as yourself.
In most other contexts, I'd remind them that I spent 34 years in the church, reading the bible, and ended up a nonbeliever. So they can fuck off.

I would say, "I have read the Bible. What's your point?"
My father was a Lutheran minister. We did lots and lots of Bible study. What does reading the Bible do for you?

A simple response of ‘I don’t discuss religion or politics’ is sufficient.

I'd love for someone to ask DH that. He'd say he'd not only read the bible, but also the Torah and Koran, had they? My guess is that someone asking that question is most likely closed minded and not open to reading other viewpoints.

I can't imagine anyone saying that to me and I live in a very Catholic country. I'm stealing peabay response if anyone does tell me I should read it Off topic but it's been pretty lively round here lately, far from dead.

I’d probably just laugh.
It just wouldn’t happen in my world anyway, in any context, but I would be gobsmacked then seriously pissed off.

I had a text conversation with my brother in law last weekend. We haven’t really talked since my husband died in 2019 but text on occasion. He asked how I was doing and I said I wasn’t having a very good day. He asked if I was sick and I responded with “sad”. His response was “let me know when you want to come to church, it might help.” I just said thanks and ended the conversation.
If anyone told me that I should read the Bible I’d probably be speechless.

Our old next door neighbour used to wear a high vis jacket with the words 'stop me and ask about Jesus' on the back. No thank you.

I think I’d have a hard time living anywhere in the US where Christianity is so ‘in your face’.

That is an odd thing to say to someone. I dont know how I would respond, but it probably depends on if I want to maintain a relationship with that person because part of my range of respinses is "you should go fuck yourself"

My general response is that I did enough of that when I was in Catholic elementary school and the 18 years I attended church.
The only time I’ve heard this said is in the context of someone doing something bad- like a “you need Jesus” situation.
Aside- this past year my Hs students were talking about another students IG. The one they were talking about was not in the room. I taught this one 5 years ago. They’re quiet, ever talk, etc. I told the kids I found it hard to believe that what they were saying about their IG was true. One kid said- “Man, they need to find Jesus. Not even I’d post what they do!” I about died laughing.

"I have read the bible. It really doesn't say anywhere in there that it is okay for religious men to lay with children, does it? All those priests that have sexually molested young children really should be reading the bible, shouldn't they?"

Politics has been more prevalent here recently with our election but generally that’s not discussed much either thankfully.
