Anyone reading about the Indian wedding? BBC After months of lavish celebrations, the wedding ceremony of the son of Asia's richest man is finally under way in the Indian city of Mumbai. Anant Ambani, son of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, is tying the knot with Radhika Merchant, daughter of pharma tycoons Viren and Shaila Merchant. The four-day extravaganza is the final stop in a string of elaborate parties the family has hosted since March, which have featured performances by popstars including Rihanna and Justin Bieber. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, and former UK PMs Tony Blair and Boris Johnson, were among the international guests. Also spotted was US wrestler and actor John Cena, who was seen hugging and congratulating relatives of the host. Key roads in Mumbai are being sealed off for several hours a day until the festivities end on Monday. Social media is awash with updates on the wedding, with people sharing minute-by-minute details of Bollywood stars and celebrities arriving. Pictures in link www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq5x22w0xl0o

Wow…crazy! I didn’t realise it was the same wedding Rihanna performed at ages ago. What a long celebration, and with daddy dearest worth $115bn a $150m wedding is a drop in the bucket. Wealth beyond anything I can imagine. 😳

First, I hope the couple are truly happy. Second, glad the family has helped others have good weddings Third, what a absolute waste of sorely needed funds for the countries and their people.

I've followed along just a bit out of curiosity. After peabay's thread, I'm wondering if they are sending thank you notes for all those gifts!

Billionaires existing alongside some of the worst poverty in the world are a disgrace. What a waste. Sorry, that’s how I feel.

I have a really hard time with this. I can understand that they probably need to have a few parties in order to accommodate all the necessary business connections needing schmoozing, and things like that - rich people do have rich people problems that need solutions, too. But this seems over-the-top even when you consider that.
Add to that the basic problem of A-spending that much money on pretty much ANYTHING, and B-doing it in a nation where so many people are in poverty. Shutting down that many roads? Right now? Not OK. There's a balance.

This is so crazy and I personally think all the celebrities that attend are just as crazy. Are they paid to attend, do they know the bride or groom or do they go just for exposure? I just don't get it!

Apart from the obvious problems with this (when so many people in India live in poverty)...that I'm not going to get into.
What I don't understand is, how is it OK for all those people of non Indian descent to wear traditional Indian clothes? is that not cultural misappropriation? Or doesn't that apply to rich people? Kim K in a teeny crop top with her boobs trying to break free, wearing a nath (the traditional nose ring) when she isn't from that nationality at all. It seems disrespectful to me, to treat Indian culture and traditional clothing just like a big fancy dress party.

I read the guests were required to wear traditional Indian clothing and were given a multiple page guide on how to do this. But the two Kardashians I saw had lots of boobage on display—they obviously didn’t read the guide.

My sister in law works with a young man from India. She and a few other co-workers flew to India for his wedding. It was also a multi-day affair with over 700 guests. They also purchased traditional Indian dresses once they arrived to wear to the ceremony. It was expected and their friend’s family made the arrangements for them at a local dress shop.

It seems disrespectful to me, to treat Indian culture and traditional clothing just like a big fancy dress party. I’m Métis and I understand the sensitivity around misappropriating culturally significant items or clothing and have asked my East Indian friends about this. They all have said they love when people dress in their traditional suits/saree’s. I have been to an elaborate and beautiful wedding where we were told that the bride and groom would love it if we could dress in traditional attire. I spent hours at another friend’s house trying on all her beautiful clothing. I tried on so many suits from her fancy wedding closet vs her not as fancy closet lol. It’s really very special how we are embraced into their culture.

Why are we sending foreign aid to this country who can afford to be a nuclear power, and who has such mega rich citizens. It’s obscene.
