If you live in a state that does not require a permit to openly carry a gun do you often see people walking around armed? My state, Virginia, is one of those, but I live in the blue bubble that's Northern Virginia and the only weapons I ever see out in the open are in the holsters of law enforcement. But then just the other day I walked into the grocery store behind a young man who had a toddler in the seat of the shopping cart. With a big gun (well, it looked big to me) on his hip. This was something totally new to me, and despite everything that goes on in this country I was shocked. Like I said, blue bubble.

No. I thought we would, but if people are carrying I have not seen them. Rural Texans often have rifles in the truck for legitimate reasons.

Another Texan here who doesn't see people openly carrying. The next county over is very red and it wouldn't shock me to see people carrying but in my little town in suburbia, I don't think I've ever seen anyone.

This is the laws for my state:
Vermont does not require permits to purchase and has no firearms registration. Both open carry and concealed carry are legal without a permit in Vermont. Any person 16 or older (although federal law requires the age to be 18) who can legally possess a firearm is allowed to carry openly or concealed.
ETA we have updated some purchase laws that just recently (or will soon) went into effect that changes somethings and not sure that my above copy/paste reflects those laws.
I have very rarely seen someone open carry, but I also live in the most liberal and populated county. I do spend a lot of in the more rural counties where you would probably be more likely to see some but truthfully I can’t even think back to the last time I did. I am sure there are some but it isn’t like it is the Wild West and people have them strapped on to their hip. I do think there is more concealed carry than open.

I'd be absolutely shocked and terrified to see someone carrying a gun in the supermarket.

I do not here in urban Houston. I’m sure many are concealed carrying though, hoping for their John Wayne moment.
Honestly if I saw someone open carrying a gun into an urban grocery store or restaurant I’d leave and call 911. How are we supposed to know what their intention is until it’s too late?

That was my thought as well, only I didn't think it until I was back at my car. I was too shocked at first. I know the reasoning behind concealed-carry permits vs. no permit for open-carry, but these days you just don't know what someone has in their mind. With so many people feeling so emboldened to do whatever they want you just never know.

Another Texan here. I split the my time between the Houston area (urban and blue) and a town of less than 700 people (rural and red) and I have only once ever seen a citizen open carry. It's the gas station manager in the rural town. If it matters, the station is open 24 hours and is on the main highway through town. It's normally quiet but I'm sure she has seen her fair share of weirdos. I actually have my LTC even though it's not required in my state. I conceal carry sometimes for protection. I also hunt. I consider myself a responsible gun owner. Almost everyone I encounter who carries will tell you that open carry is a bad idea. It makes you more of a target and eliminates your ability to safely de-escalate a situation. Contrary to popular belief, responsible carry means using your weapon for self-defunse is always, always an absolute last resort.

Another Texan. I live in a red area and I don't see anyone open carrying. I'm sure there are a lot of concealed carry out there. On the very rare occasion that I see someone open carry it always shocks me because it's so rare.

One wonders, then, why Abbott and the lege pushed so hard for permitless open carry. I think both concealed and open carry should still require a permit (that includes passing a safety class that drills into heads the thing you said - it's always an absolute last resort, and only for protection of human life). Training should also include not knowingly putting yourself in a situation where you are likely to have to protect yourself that way. We have way too many wackos around here who are willing to draw their weapons to prevent or punish a property crime - and our "justice" system generally encourages that behavior by declining to bring charges or acquitting them. Would be nice if some of the R folks here would lobby Greg for a more responsible system. He certainly doesn't listen to Dems on the topic.

I occasionally see open carry in my area. Within my county it’s less likely as we are a blue bubble - public university town in Appalachia- but I have seen people carrying. . Surrounding counties are very rural - I’ve seen it more often and it’s almost always those who really shouldn’t have access to guns at all.

In PA: twice, once while getting pet food, once while at dinner. It was odd to me, because who needs their him just out there while getting kibble or a burger?
Once here in GA.
But those are only the ones that I noticed and were prominently on display. I know that multitudes more were right around me that I didn't see.

I'm in Texas, albeit in a blue bubble. I can't recall ever seeing anyone open carry here. I can't even recall anyone who is obviously carrying concealed except a few times.

Open carry as well as concealed carry (now without license) is legal in KY. I have my concealed carry license but usually my gun stays in the car, especially when with my DH cause he carries too. I rarely see anyone carry where it’s visible. Doesn’t bother me either way.
I live in a very rural area and most kids are hunting by the age of 3-4. Gun safety is drilled into your head from birth. 4H even offers shooting sports thru the schools. My daughter was on that team from age 9-15. She shot BB gun, sport rifle, target rifle, pistol and bow. Pistol only allowed after age 14. She won many competitions and even scored seventh in the state on target rifle at age 11.

You only need a permit for concealed carry here. But no, I have not ever noticed anyone outside of law enforcement and obvious hunting groups carrying firearms of any kind in public. And that's coming from someone who had a rifle club in high school.

I've only noticed a handful of times, though I live in a blue county.
The one memorable time I saw someone with a gun was at an estate sale. It was at least 10 years ago, before the open carry law in TX, though technically on private property. This family was running the estate sale themselves and the man who was at the cash box had a handgun just laying out on the table.

When I lived on Alaska all the time. Never understood why they needed to be armed at the coffee shop and at Costco. They usually drive big pickups too. So you know what they say "big truck, small..."

South Carolina has open carry as of this year. I’ve yet to really see anyone open carrying though. I do know several people personally who conceal carry on a regular basis.
We had a huge barbecue festival in town this past weekend that draws people from many states. The local government elected to declare the downtown area where the festival was happening as “gun free.” Apparently that’s a provision in the newly minted state law. There was the predictable bluster from the Bubbas on social media, but I think it basically turned out to be a non-event.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen it way more times than I’ve been comfortable with. I immediately have thoughts about anyone who open carries, and theorize they have a small dick, and they’re an asshole.

I Live in a small town in Texas 5 months of the year. Just going into the post office, I see three or four pistols in holsters. It's pretty common around town. Usually older men.

Yes. I often see people with a holstered gun. It is very common around here. I also grew up near here and it was common in high school for the boys to have guns in racks in their truck windows for hunting before or after school.

Iowa is permitless for both open and concealed carry. I have never seen anyone open carry. I know many who conceal carry all the time.
I haven't seen anyone open carry in my area, other than law enforcement on duty.
I would say more than half the people in my area have a side arm in their vehicle. Many have steering wheel column hand gun mounts.
We don't carry, as a rule. Sometimes, I have when I was concerned about a mountain lion in the timber. Verified recent sighting, and I had to go fix fence in the timber where it was. Lions don't stick around, but I was nervous about it. DH sometimes has a pistol in his truck, but it is in a locked case. He has to euthanize once in a while, and that is what he has it in there for.
I see zero need to carry open or concealed for the area I live in.
