Have you ever lost the ability to taste carbonation?
At first I thought it was just a bad can of soda (Coke Zero). But the next day I tried a second can from the same 12 pack and it was also flat. So, I assumed it was the 12 pack. On Sunday I was at a BBQ and had a bottled beer and a mini can of Sprite, both tasted flat. I had dh taste them both and he said they were fine.
I love carbonated beverages…bubbly water and Coke Zero being my favs. With them tasting flat, I can’t even finish a can. I figure that’s probably a good thing for the Coke Zero.
Have you ever lost the ability to taste carbonation? This did just start at the same time my dr had me start on a new medication.

I'm curious if the medication was an anti-seizure med. Something in the vein of Topamax?

I've never had this happen, but I have heard some medications can cause this as a side effect.

isn't carbonation a feel and not a taste? it's that fizzy feeling you get from sodas. even when i had a cold or something, i could feel the fizz even if i couldn't taste the soda. if a soda was flat, i would definitely feel the "flat".

Are you taking Topamax, by chance? That is a known side effect of it.

Yes…you are right…it’s the feel, not a taste. And, it is topamax. I was trying to read thru the RX sheet for side effects and didn’t see it on the paper from the pharmacy. My dr didn’t tell me diddly (she’s really crummy about things like that).

Yes, Topamax will cause your soda to taste different. Beware also if you feel your mind is slipping. They call Topamax 'Dopamax' because it has this side effect for some as well.

Yep, I definitely had that problem with Topamax. I was just as glad it didn't help me because even if you try to avoid them, sometimes you just really want a soda!

Definitely feeling some fuzzy brain today. I’m on day 5. I’ll have to see how that plays out. I work full time in a pretty high stress role.

Google it, it has all kinds of side effects- the carbonation thing, not being able to come up with words, and for some, wild mood swings. I asked our Dr to take dh off of it in advance of dh's appointment. Dh did not realize how bad it was, so let your dh know to keep an eye out for that.

One of my friends lost the feel of it like you describe. For me it tasted like pennies, very metallic. For some those things go away with time on the med. for others it doesn’t. The changes to my sense of taste was one of the main reasons I stopped topamax.

I had a few side effects when I first started Topomax. There was some brain fog but it went away. I think once I built up to my dose, about 6 weeks of it. Some tingling in my hands. That almost went away, except when it was cold outside, below -25C (-15F?). I had another side effect in the beginning but I don't even remember now, maune I do have brain fog, lol! I was on it for about 6 years.

No, carbonation definitely has a flavor - I cannot stand sparkling water. It's also the main reason why I no longer drink Coca-Cola (or any other soda). I gave it up in 2018 during my first Whole30 round. When I went to reintroduce it, instead of it being too sweet, I couldn't stand the taste of the carbonation. At first I thought it was bad Coke from Chick-fil-A, so I tried it canned and bottled - I even tried European Coke a few weeks later, but it still tasted bad. While it is much better for my health (and teeth!), I cried when I realized I no longer liked the taste. 😭

A different medication that I take for high altitude backpacking causes that too. It is bizarre.

Topamax caused my kidney stones. I’ve had 26 kidney stones since 2016 after taking Topamax for only six months. I’ve had two surgeries to remove a stone and getting ready to have another to repair damage to my ureter caused by a lodged stone.

This is so interesting. I’d never heard of it being a side effect to specific medications. I typically avoid anything carbonated anyway. I swear it gives me a bloated feeling.

I thought *I* was the only one who had this side effect of Topomax! I tried and tried to get past it but I just couldn't. I kept it up for a month and had to stop. I tried again a few months later because I found out I had Covid right after I started the first time so I was blaming that but the second try was the same. I actually list is on my "allergies" drug list now (I only have two drugs on the list hehe).

I was warned that Topamax would make sodas taste bad, and I was looking forward to that side effect. Alas, sodas are still my favorite.
