Gavin Newsom has signed a law barring school districts from passing policies that require schools to notify parents if their child asks to change their gender identification. The law bans rules requiring school staff to disclose a student's gender identity or sexual orientation to any other person without the child's permission. Proponents of the legislation say it will help protect LGBTQ+ students who live in unwelcoming households. But opponents say it will hinder schools' ability to be more transparent with parents. The law comes amid a nationwide debate over local school districts and the rights of parents and LGBTQ+ students. California Assemblymember Chris Ward, a Democrat representing San Diego, introduced the legislation because of what he called a "growing national attack" on LGBTQ people. "Although many LGBTQ youth have supportive families, some unfortunately continue to face rejection and are exposed to serious harm if pre-maturely forced to reveal their identity," Ward said on the Assembly floor last month.

I applaud this! If kids came from tolerant homes, the parent would already know.

In my area, LGBTQ+ make up about 80% of foster youth who are homeless and living in shelters or with friends or on the streets because their homes were not tolerant of their choice.
The right kept saying oh but we have programs. No we don't. Oh but the parents won't kick them out! Yes they do. And there is proof.

Schools are often a safe place for kids to come out. It would be a shame if we took that from them.

I was also on their analytics committee. I don’t remember the exact number, but unhoused LGBTQ+ individuals made up a very large segment of our patient population for the reasons you’ve mentioned. I suppress any displays of sadness when I’m acting in a professional capacity, choosing to display empathy as best as I can instead. I can’t describe how badly I was crying inside when someone showed up in bad shape after being outed in a religious environment and then the only place I could find them a bed was a church that requires they go to service to attain said bed. Even if the church is tolerant, I’m cognizant of what I’m suggesting and it felt absolutely horrible.

This is why a lot of unhoused persons would rather starve or be in bad situations outside than be offered help. Church help comes with a lot of promises. Promises to attend church. Be baptized. Pray over the food you get, etc. So many religious outreach programs have strings attached and unhoused just want food or water or clothes or a shower. Not Christian stuff stuffed down their throats.

Can I just say that my mind did NOT go in the direction it was intended when I read the title? Outings? Wouldn't parents need to sign a permission slip... in my day they were called field trips. LOL Just thought it was funny and wanted to share!!

I was the executive producer of our high school's theatrical productions for 4 years. I live in dark blue Connecticut and ran into a solid number of parents who ripped me up one side and down another for allowing their children to use their chosen pronouns or a differently gendered name (or just a different chosen name) in our program.
And these were people who likely voted blue but felt it was "fine for somebody else's kid."
Surprised the hell out of me and made me realize that it doesn't matter how liberal you think your area is there will always be people who struggle with their children's gender and sexuality if they don't meet social norms.

Unfortunate true story, I was in SF hanging out late in high school and ran into someone I knew from high school. He had been kicked out by his conservative religious parents when he was a sophomore; they found out he was gay. He had done some sex work in the city to survive. One of my high school political acts had been writing an oped opposing the parents at my (very conservative) high school who were demanding to know the names of the kids in the LBGTQ type club, which were confidential. We all knew what would happen to those kids if their parents found out—something just like that.

I was reading the comment section on an article about this. Many commenters said they should be told if their child has a “mental illness” so they can get them help. I don’t know if they were all trolls, but if not, I hate to think of the “help” they would seek for their child.

It's disgusting that so many parents can't be trusted to support their kids just being who they are. Policies like this shouldn't be necessary. Every child should feel comfortable being who they are at home. But here we all are.
We can blame the conservative churches for this problem. The same ones with an absolute epidemic of sex abuse scandals and coverups.

So many of these kids just biding their time trying to get safely to adulthood.
