If you have switched or changed album style, size or brand, why did you do that and how did you make the transition?
I am rethinking 12x12 D Ring albums and space. But change to what? And how would I do that? (I have about 200 WR memory keeper page protectors and 6 spare albums right now)
If you use Creative Memories albums, what makes you stick with them? Have you switched back and forth?
Any and all thoughts about changing up your albums, changing brands or sizes welcome!

My albums are all different sizes, shapes, colors. At one point I stressed that I would be unhappy with how that looked, but I then figured, all of my books are different colors, heights, textures, etc., and I don't have any issue with that, so why view my albums any differently?

I have a wide variety of albums. They aren’t all on shelves/visible so it doesn’t bother me. I have most stacked in a big armoire with closed doors.

When my current shelf runs out of space, I was going to decide if I wanted to switch to 8.5 by 11. The room will be out at the end of this year. I have a few ongoing projects in 8.5 by 11, but I really prefer a square page. DH will just have to build me another shelf...
I make about 2 albums per year (since 2004), although this year it might end up being 3, so they aren't quite taking over my house yet. I can fit 5 albums per shelf on my current set up, so I guess I have about 20 on there.
ETA: I use d-ring 12 by 12 cloth AC albums. I started with blue, green and brown. They are hard to find in any color except brown or black anymore...

I have used a lot of them: CM, CTMH, American Crafts, WRMK, Simple Stories, Doodlebug, Scrapbook.com, EK Success, Becky Higgins, yada yada yada.
I have now come back full circle to Creative Memories albums with their top loading page protectors (Pocket Pages). They are less big and bulky to fit on the shelf and my CM friend gives me a discount. Since I have so much 12x12 paper I tend to use that size and the CM 12x12 albums are less heavy than other brands.

I'm one that has stuck with CM albums. I love the color variety, the quality, and the flexibility (especially now that they have top-loading page protectors). I've tried generic/other brands of strap-hinge albums, and they fallen apart. I very much dislike D-ring or 3-ring binders, and I don't do pocket pages or PL. (Although now CM actually has pocket pages too!) ETA" looks like Night Owl and I were responding at the same time. I just have to reiterate how much I love the CM quality. Those albums hold up!

I went from 12x12 post bound (but am going to switch to d-ring) to 9x12 d-ring in 2020. So for 18 years I scraped 12x12. I LOVE 9x12. Because I can do a pocket page or traditional layout.

I switched from CM post bound albums with 8 1/2x11" pages to 3-ring binders with 12x12" pages, after I finished my first scrapbooks which were planned out chronologically and created that way. Going to 3-ring format gave me the freedom to scrap out of order, yet slip pages in where they "fit".
There were also a few other things going on at the time that brought me to believe I needed the larger format. I went from scrapping the past (my kids' lives birth to the time of album) to current (lives of my dgk's as they happened). Also cameras changed to digital, so I ended up taking and printing tons more photos. About the same time, I discovered all the glories of scrapbooking materials beyond papers and stickers. I wanted to pile on all the things, and I needed more real estate to include the plethora of pic's and the glories of embellishment.
I have worked with 6x8 pages for specific albums. But I am most comfortable playing with the 12x12 format, and actually usually see both pages together as a continuous LO, so actually a 12x24" canvas to tell each story.
I did not comment on the VM thread, but there is no way I am going back to change ANYTHING I have scrapbooked. Some of my pages are better than others; some not so good. But each carries a bit of me in them, even if it was the ME I used to be. If my style has changed as products have changed, skill has developed and techniques learned, so what? I had fun doing all those pages. And I put alot of love into most of them. Not gonna fool with that!

I switched from postbound to D ring & I love them. I'll stick to 12x12 but I am going to try what Victoria Marie is doing & intersperse some 6x8 and other sized pocket pages.

If you have switched or changed album style, size or brand, why did you do that and how did you make the transition? I've always used 12x12 albums & included page protectors of various sizes/configurations for extra photos/memorabilia. If you use Creative Memories albums, what makes you stick with them? Have you switched back and forth? I've never used any CM product.

I started with CM albums from WAY back in the day. I used regular page protectors that fit in their albums. They were Pioneer brand and you could buy them at Joann’s in a 25 pack.
CM albums were expensive, but I scrapbooked a lot less back then. I switched to D ring albums because of cost.
12x12 is my happy size. Every once in a while I will do a different size, but they just slip into the regular album. I also do 6x8 for my December Project every year.
I have TRIED to get into Travelers notebooks a few times, but it’s like a mental block of what to document in it.

I have purchased 8.5x11, 6x8, and 8x8 pager protectors to mix in with my 12x12 pages. I am really happy with the results. I have cut down pocket pages to 6x12, too. I think it makes my albums more interesting. I did make a run through my completed albums and reduced the number of layouts by a bit. As a new grandmother, I felt the need to scrapbook every photo, LOL. I really don't think the grands need 6 layouts for Easter or their birthday. I also got rid of most of the animal photos from the zoo. There were enough photos including the kids to make it obvious we were at the zoo.

I started with 8.5x11 and still scrap 8.5x11 22 years later. I didn't have real albums for a long long time - just 3ring binders from WM. I tried the postbound albums with the conversion kits for a couple of albums and did end up taking those apart down the road as they started to fall apart. Once we had a HL locally, I did switch from binders to their 3-ring albums. Unfortunately they've discontinued both of the ones I used primarily - the travel print I liked for trips and the fake leather I used for our family albums. I don't care for the albums they still carry (too small and mostly o-ring vs d-ring). I just picked up some 9x12 from SB.com that I'm hoping will work out to use going forward.
I have done a few 8x8, 2 9x9, and a couple of 6x6 albums over the years. I do much prefer rectangles to squares though design-wise.
I can see going through and consolidating in the future - like many, I did multiple layouts for a single event especially early on whereas now I try to scrap the best of the photos or the ones that are needed for the story rather than all or most of the photos. But I don't see me changing from 3-ring or 8.5x11

The one thing that I am so jealous of in paper scrapping that is much harder to do in digital is having differently-sized pages in the same album. I could technically create smaller pages in my digital albums but uploading the smaller sizes with white space into regularly-sized pages and then cutting the white space off when the album was delivered to me is a pain and doesn't have the same feel.
I scrap 12 x 12 but have them printed as 8 x 8 softcover Shutterfly albums. I did create a wedding coffee table book with just pretty photos and had that printed as a hardcover 11x8 album but I wouldn't do that all the time. My albums are not bulky, of course, so I currently have all 27 on the same shelf in my living room.

I have been scrapbooking in 12x12 since I started in 2016. I am not a chronological scrapbooker, so having d-ring albums makes the most sense. I typically have one 12x12 album per year. I use IKEA Kallax shelving to house the albums. Four albums fit in each cube, leaving about 2 inch gap. That gap drives me crazy!!
I've always liked the idea of having travel or special event scrapbooking be house in smaller albums (6x8 or 8.5x11) and have collected albums of these sizes for different trips/events. I have yet to make one (the idea of it makes my brain hurt - subject for another thread!). But the majority of these albums DO NOT fit in the 2 inch space I have leftover in each Kallax cube, and really that is where they need to live. I don't want to house them elsewhere and I'm not willing to lose any 12x12 album space to make room for smaller albums. So I'm pivoting...
I recently found binders that hold 8.5" x11" paper that appear to be made from heavyweight cardboard covered in pretty paper (non-plastic covers). They have about a 1.5" spine and use 1" d-rings. I think they will be great for scrapbooking special events/travel and (most importantly!) fit nicely into the Kallax cube gaps. Reading this thread made me remember that I wanted to try the binders and finally bought one. If they fit and are decent quality, I'm going to start using these for "mini album"-worthy trips/events.

Ryann would you be willing to share where you found your 8x11 albums? They sound interesting! I’m an equal opportunity user of all album sizes, and especially like using smaller albums for travel and specifically focused subjects, like December Daily.

I started scrapbooking years ago when I realized that my wedding pictures had faded because they were placed in a Hallmark magnetic album. I went on a search for acid-free albums and found a Canson spiral bound album. After putting all of my wedding pictures in it, I decided I didn't like the way it looked. Then I discovered Creative Memories.
My first album with them was 8 1/2 X 11. (They don't make that size anymore.) Then I moved on to 12 X 12 for many years. When they came out with the top loading pocket pages, I was thrilled. The albums are so expensive, though, so I experimented with WRMK D-ring albums. That was a mistake. All of those albums have frayed. So much for saving money.
I'm no longer taking as many photos since my children are adults. I am currently using 9 X 12 albums from Scrapbook.com, and so far so good. I like that there is more inspiration out there using this size, and I can always insert 8 1/2 X 11 and 6 X 8 page protectors. I'm relatively new to Week in the Life and December Daily, but I've been using 6 X 8 albums for those smaller projects.
I miss 12 X 12, though. I miss doing layering and other techniques that just aren't the same in pocket pages. I'm tempted to go back to Creative Memories, but maybe I'll tiptoe back by getting an 8 X 8 album. I do like square layouts.

I started with Creative Memories for a few years. Great albums but very limited space. Switched to faux leather 3 ringed albums and have those now. Sometimes the color or design changes a bit, but they are pretty similar.

I've always used 12x12 and I'll continue to use that size. I like a lot of area to design in- any other size is too small for the photos and designs I want to do. I started out with the old albums with the screws but quickly switched to 3 ring and it is so much better. The only problem is that you have to have the books pretty stuffed or the pages sag.
I did one album with pocket pages but that was a trip I took with my ex and I can't stand looking at photos of him anymore. It is a shame, too, because I really liked how it turned out. Maybe I'll look at it in 20 years.
I have a hard time putting my pages in albums, though. I like the pages so much better when they are out of the plastic page protector. I probably have 40 layouts stacked on my coffee table because of that. I like looking through them every day while my coffee is brewing and I'm not ready to put them in an album, even though I have 3 empty albums sitting there too.

I have switched to 8 1/2 x 11 as well, in huge part to running out of room for 12 x 12 d ring binders, in part to save money/use fewer resources. I use these binders as albums: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071R2LZKD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1I love them so far. I am intrigued by switching my 12x12 albums (20ish, very full) to strap hinge to save room (tried postbound and just can't deal), but do strap hinge albums all include the bg cardstock? attached to the hinge? Because I don't necessarily want to wallpaper all my past layouts and have to replace the hundreds of page protectors I already have.

I started with Creative Memories albums almost 25 years ago. Then I moved to CTMH post-bound leather albums. Those albums hold A TON of pages. Then I used a few American Crafts ring bound albums. Now I'm a 3 ring 9x12 albums pocket memory keeper. If I still scrapped 12x12 consistently I'd use the Creative Memories albums with top loading page protectors. I do like how compact those albums are on the shelf - they aren't as tall and wide as a 3 ring binder. And the strap system means no sagging pages or pages slipping out of a gap in a ring. (assuming the quality is comparable to the ones I have)
But I wouldn't change all the albums I currently have to one single consistent style at this point. The hodgepodge of albums in the Kallax is ok with me.

Creative Memories still offers the old-style pages that are attached to the hinge, but they also have top-loading page protectors so you can use any paper you like. You can also move pages around very easily. They do include a 12X12 white cardstock page inside the page protector, but I just pull it out and save it for something else. Hope that makes sense. Here is a link, which may clarify: CM Top-Loading Page Protectors

I think I just did a search for "1 inch decorative binder" on Amazon. I picked this floral one to try out first ( link). I thought these could be fun, especially if used for a specific trip/occasion as you could decorate the cover, in addition to the pages inside ( link).

I started with potbound then switched to D ring. The majority of mine are the WRMK faux leather ones. But lately, I've been frustrated with them disintegrating. I'm not sure if I will switch to linen entirely or try different brands like Doodlebug and scrapbook.com
