Is this still a thing? Twenty plus years ago when we were furnishing our house, I made a trip to NC and bought our kitchen table, leather furniture, family room hutch, coffee table, end table and several bedroom sets. Boyles was where I got most of the furniture. Some was high end, some middle of the road brands and a few items were low end. The prices I got were incredible compared to what I would have paid here - I am in PA. I never hear of people doing this anymore, unless it is because I am in my 60's and don't really need much furniture anymore.
I am going to be in need of a new bedroom set. i want to get something nice, but don't want to spend a fortune. We mostly have Raymour & Flanigan here. Some Ethan Allen (too pricey) and Broyhill here. I think if I go 30 miles north there is a furniture store that has good prices.
I didn't know whether to spend the time investigating NC again. Thanks in advance.

I remember that trend! Have not heard anyone mention it for years either.

I am not sure if this will be helpful, but I do know people from my area (New England/upstate NY) that often go to PA (😄) to buy furniture from the Amish. But it seems like good quality furniture is really expensive no matter where you go. I have been looking for a few things and unfortunately, unless I win a lottery soon, I will just end up with average stuff as opposed to some of the gorgeous pieces that I have seen out there.

That's a good question. I haven't heard anything recently, either.
When I was a teenager, my parents dragged me through a giant furniture mall in NC when we were on vacation. It was miserable.
I would love to go there today!

I did check and Boyles is out of business, but Furniture Land South is still there. I remember that being huge.

I remember that, but haven’t heard anyone say that in years.
Have you looked at Facebook Marketplace? You can get some good deals and nice stuff there.

We still have the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory NC. That was where Boyles was located and probably where you shopped. Although they did used to have another location on the other side of town in addition to the one at the mart.
I don't know how many people still travel here to buy and how prices compare. The last time I shopped at the mart was in 2020. I ordered a La-z-boy recliner. Because it was 2020, it took nearly 6 months to get here but I'm very happy with it. I did end up ordering another piece I wanted from Wayfair because prices were just too high for the nightstand I really liked. Upholstered furniture is still made here but not a lot of casegoods (end tables, dining tables, etc.) anymore. Most of that is made overseas.
It used to be that I recommended people travel Highway 321 from Hickory to Lenoir to shop for furniture before going to the mart because the deals were better. There were a number of good stores there that each carried several brands where you could order or buy off the floor. Pretty much all of those have closed. 2008's financial crisis wiped out what was left.
If I were you, I would shop locally to see what you want and then call the mart to see who carries it and price compare. It's a long trip for one room of furniture unless you have other reasons for traveling. If you do decided to come, 2 of us Peas live in the area. PM me.

I am not sure if it is still a bargain, but in the late 1990s, we stopped in Hickory, NC when moving from CT to TX. Still using our gorgeous Pennsylvania House bedroom set we bought there.

Yes, it is still a thing. I live close by. Furnitureland South is the only one of the “big” showrooms still around that is open to the public year around. Rose Furniture and Broyles Furniture are no longer in business. I was at Furnitureland South last weekend and there were quite a few customers inside.

Furniture Mart in Hickory is expensive in my opinion. There are two great stores where we do shop; however, that we have gotten great prices. One is the Bernhardt Furniture Outlet on Highway 321. And the fun thing is a new antique mart has also opened in that location. Still filling with venders but it's nice. Then the other store is The Ultimate Garage Sale I and II also off of Highway 321. You might check into those.

Furnitureland South is expensive too. Sometimes I go there just to get design ideas and then I shop for the best price. They have a great outlet in an adjacent building. I like it because you can sometimes find super good deals and take it home the same day. That can be exciting. I am 5 minutes away, so I can check often. However , I do want to check out the furniture in Hickory real soon!

Personally, I don’t think there are any must come to NC deals here. I moved two years ago to near Hickory and furnished a large house. I did not get anything from the furniture marts. I checked lots of stores but ordered most online for delivery- same stuff just cheaper on Amazon and other retail sights.
Example nightstand $500 at furniture store $289 on Amazon same brand.

If you are in PA, go to Lancaster. We have bedroom furniture that we bought before we were married (36 years ago) and it looks brand new. We don’t buy much from the stores because they jack up the prices too much but have been buying from 3 generations of the same family forever.

I am buying the furniture for a second house we have in NJ. So you buy directly from this family or do they have a store or website? Thanks.

I also remember when going to NC was a thing to do. One of my sisters went to NC and bought a bedroom suite...had it shipped to Texas.

Never heard of this. If I am honest, I will admit that I don't like "quality" furniture because nothing is going to stay in fashion long enough for me to want to keep it for decades. Therefore, I'm happy to buy cheaper quality stuff that I can expect to want to get rid of within ten years or so.
Exception: my mission-inspired oak entertainment center and matching coffee table that lives in the basement with all my vintage art and tsotchkes, colorful rugs, eclectic art, etc.

Then again, I gravitate towards grandmillenial design. My parents bought my bedroom furniture back in the 90s, and I still use most of it. The twin headboards are still at their house, and we donated the desk and chair after I graduated from high school, but I still use the dresser, nightstand, and bookcase/drawers. I hate to think how much money I would have spent over the years buying cheap furniture every 5-10 years, not to mention the environmental impact. OP, I would recommend looking for estate sales or FB marketplace to find good furniture from people downsizing.

I tend to move about every 7 years so it's normal for me to just buy new stuff that's a better fit for the house and that doesn't look dated. Heavy wood 80s-90s furniture is not my style at all. I guess I'm keeping the global economy going?
