Why? Why do so many collections have roller skates in them? It is like it is the new mustache or something. Or new llama. Retro skates, too- not inline ones.
I've also seen air balloons making a comeback. I had enough of them the last time. Never once have I ever used them. Now zeppelins, however... (I'm a Led Zep fan).
And we've recently discussed the Eiffel Tower thing.
I do miss Amy Tan and her random icon craziness but I'm not even seeing weird icons lately, just really, really tired old ones.
Have you seen anything new and random pop up lately? What icons do you wish would go away?
(I haven't finished me coffee yet. I need to keep the board moving.)

Roller skating is in the middle of a comeback. A beach resort town 20 minutes north opened a brand new seasonal outdoor rink just this week. DW has been enjoying rollerskating for the last couple of years, and bought her own pair of skates earlier this year. It's definitely a thing, and not random. I'm quite happy that scrapbooking has included the icon in the last year as it's absolutely relevant in my life.

Everything old comes back eventually, but I just assumed it was in the same category as the Viewmaster reels, old fashioned watering can, lemons in a farm pail, farm truck, tickets, and Bingo card, all of which I found recently at the not so local LSS in a new Simple Stories collection called Simple Vintage Linen Market. I loved the collection, perhaps because I’m “vintage,” LOL. I did use a hot air balloon once on a layout, and only once: for a page of the Disney 3D “hang gliding” experience at Epcot, which I think included a hot air balloon in the video.

Rainbows. I do love them but I have more than I need.

artbabe my mid life crisis was buying a pair of rollerskates and getting back on the rink… I’m just annoyed they never use PURPLE rollerskates in their collections 😁

In addition to the icons above, I have no use for VW vans and surfboards in so many summer collections.

I think it boils down to everyone making similar collections. Someone thinks ""ooh, we should include roller skates!" And if only one brand thought that, we'd be like "Roller Skates! I could use a few of those!" But instead 6 brands think "Ooh roller skates!" And we're thinking "How many roller skates do I need?" If only they could divvy up their themes at the beginning of each year, right? Giant imaginary scrapbook company convention for the upcoming summer:49 & market--You take the nautical summer theme. Simple Stories--you get the country vibes summer theme. Sunflowers, canning jars w/flowers, bunting, & glasses of iced tea. Bo Bunny--we need surf fun from you. Recollections, some boardwalk/pier please. Carta Bella--everything backyard/neighborhood fun, please--bikes, popsicles, roller skates, hopscotch, skateboards, bubble wands. Bella Blvd., you're in charge of palm trees, coconuts, & cocktail glasses with little umbrellas. Fancy Pants, all things camping, please. Graphic 45, vintage summer. Ciao Bella, all things gardens and flowers. Memory Place--give us some generic amusement park. Ferris wheel, bumper cars, balloons, ice cream. Crate Paper--give us some day trip elements--skip the planes and Eiffel Tower, please. Try restaurants, museums, theaters, etc. Shimelle--you give us the basic summer icons--sunshine, rainbows, cute puffy clouds, picnic baskets, and so forth But alas, instead on any given year we might get 10 beach lines but not one bubble wand, 8 surfboards but not one ferris wheel. Honestly, I could use to go find if there's been a line with bubble wands, sandboxes, popsicles, super soakers, sidewalk chalk, hopscotch, treehouses, & sprinkler or swimming pool type elements. Those would work for both my own childhood summers & my kids' earlier summers, too.

Nostalgia... it's the same with cassette tapes.
Our roller rink closed and was torn down about 8 years ago, if they are trending I can only hope we get a new one built. My youngest is 10, time is ticking...
I have a few roller skating stories from my childhood I haven't scrapped yet (and I don't have photos.) My school used to have skates, and would hold skating events after school once in a while in the gym... I learned to skate holding onto the folding mats that were velcroed to the gym wall. The 80s...

I'd be more than happy for the VW beetles and other retro looking vehicles to go away. If only they could divvy up their themes at the beginning of each year, right? This would be amazing if only it could happen!

I know at least 8 people who roller skate on a regular basis with 4 wheeled skates.

Just saying peas it’s a great core (balance), leg (squat position for most of it) and aerobic workout (gotta show those younguns a thing or two) with great music if you get the right rink 😉

One, it would hurt my back like crazy, and two, I know I'd never be able to get back up. It looks fun but I'm pretty sure my skating days are over. I loved it in middle school, though. There was a rink near by and that is where the kids hung out.

There was a rink near by and that is where the kids hung out. I went to Skateland a couple of times in my mid 40s and the idea of falling is definitely more worrisome as you get older, at least if you haven't kept skating between ages 15 and 45! I did kind of remember how to do it though, and it helped that Skateland in Washington state was almost exactly the same as the one I went to in NZ 35 years ago. I think they still had their original skates and everything. yuck! The only difference was that inline skates hadn't made it to NZ when I was doing skating as my Wednesday "sports" elective at age 11. (It was not sports. It was a chance to wear cute clothes instead of a uniform and flirt with the boys who were a year older! Plus glowing under the black light and cool music!) Anyway, I think a lot of people may have 80s skating stories to tell. And roller skating is going strong in some places and communities, and in newer ways like roller derby. But I doubt that's really why it's in collections. Nostalgia sells. Fun colors and patterns sell. I wish they'd all stop jumping on the same trends and copying each other too. I'm sick of buying something from one brand and then seeing another brand has a better version. Especially in cardmaking - stamps and dies are expensive! I'm learning to wait until everyone has their version of the gnome or the roller skate out so I can hopefully choose the one I love most.
