Always an attorney, until I took a Business Law class and realized the law wasn't so black and white.
Then I switched to Accounting.
Currently my role is in Market Intelligence.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. I went so far as attending a specialized high school that had an animal science program. I don't remember what happened but I lasted at that school for a year. I loved science and I thought I was going to be pre-med but then discovered I can't stand the sight of blood or the thought of bones or people in pain. So then I decided to become a scientist which I did for a few years but decided it wasn't quite what I wanted. On a whim I applied to law school and got accepted. Best choice I ever made since I love what I do. Was the bar exam super hard? My dad's wife's son went to law school but never passed the bar after 4-5 times so now he does legal stuff, but not a lawyer. He's sensitive about that subject so I never asked him.

This is a nice thread. When I was really young, i wanted to be a nun. I found out they live together and was like wow, how fun! Slumber party every night!
When I got older, I wanted to be a teacher, but in my freshman year of college i figured out that I didn’t like kids all that much. I think if you are going to be a teacher you should love children.
I switched my major to criminal justice, after taking a few of those courses, thinking I would be a probation officer. The classes were really interesting. My sr year internship showed me that 95% of the time, it was a crappy office job. When I graduated, my part time bank job turned into a full time gig and I just stayed in banking.

I wanted to be an architect, but there was not college for that in my state and I would have had go out of state and pay out of state tuition which was like double back then. My parents said no way. They wanted me to be a teacher, but I was not having any of that. Thought about nursing, but our only nursing program was a small nursing school associated with our hospital and it had a waiting list a mile long. Needing to figure something out, I attended a college to become a Medical Assistant. Figured I could to that while waiting on a slot at the nursing college. I did complete that, but also found out that I was pretty woozy when it came to seeing a loved one in pain. About fainted watching them put stitches in my brother's eye area and when my boyfriend got his fingers caught in a printing press and they told me to go out there and see if I could see any fingers. When I went to try to find a job as a Medical Assistant, I was often turned away because of no experience and was even told, we want a much older and mature woman. Ugg! They could ask age back in those days. Microelectronics was booming at the time and we had several plants built here. They paid excellent with excellent benefits, so I started working at one of them. I then started college to get some type of electrical degree, but after 5 years, the industry collapsed and hundred were laid off. Took assessment tests and they indicated I would be good with numbers, so I got my degree in accounting. Worked for our utility company until I retired as a supervisor over an administrative group that was responsible of developing and monitoring department budgets. I really liked my job. The supervising people was a challenge at times though. I had some very strong personalities that clashed with each other and had to mediate them often. My grandson took architectural engineering in high school and I think I quickly learned I would have never been happy in that field, so my parents not wanting to pay out of state tuition was a blessing in disguise.

An astronaut. Any time I mentioned it, I was told that girls couldn’t do that. This was me, too. Although I was never told I couldn't do it by my family or anything, but by others. Technically it was preceded by wanting to be an astronomer. Then I guess it was replaced by chemist or something like that. I always said science. Started out university in chemical engineering, ended up in biology and environmental science. Worked in the regulatory realm of that for several years, quit to be a mom, then kind of fell into working in the world of advocacy for homeless people. I currently work in what is called a homeless navigation center, which helps people get on the pathway to getting into homes, IDs, etc. I'm just a volunteer and work in the hospitality part once or twice a week, so basically serving food and talking with people, but I love it. It's definitely not something I'd ever have seen myself doing or being capable of doing!

In elementary school I wanted to be an artist. In high school I wanted to be a meteorologist. I've always been fascinated by extreme weather, but science was not my strength. I've taken several college classes but have never obtained a degree; just a Bookkeeping certificate. I worked in Accounting for the majority of my career. About 15 years ago I took graphic design/marketing classes, and 10 years ago took web design classes. I thought about pivoting my career - I wanted to build websites for small, crafty businesses. I realized after a while that no one would want to hire a 40 year to build websites so I stuck with Accounting until I retired last year. I will say I really miss Excel.

At age 5 I wanted to be a professional baseball player and even learned to juggle so I could get a spot on a little league team. By age 8 I had read a book about a guy that was a full time college student and my career goal was set in stone! Lol. I joined the military to capitalize on money for college, because there was none in my family, and ended up in college for 12 years before Berkeley caught on and kicked me out, because being a full time student isn't a thing according to them 😣. I studied mostly science with some Czech literature thrown in. I became a construction project manager, focusing on building labs.

when you grew up? And did you become that? I wanted to be a 'shoe shop lady' (when I was about 5 I believe) and I did have a brief spell working in a lovely independent shop selling leather shoes and bags so I did sort of achieve my 'ambition' Apparently I also wanted to be a drum majorette but my Mum said she didn't remember ever hearing that or she would have tried to find a club for me to join as a kid Later, as a teenager, I actually wanted to be a film make up artist doing all the fake blood, scars etc What about you? When I was 5 or 6, I wanted to be a teacher because I liked taking the register. 10 years later I decided I could never, ever be a teacher because teens can be horrible. I never, ever have, and I have the ultimate respect for teachers. I didn't like myself nor any of my friends as teenagers. Thankfully we all grew up. Re: fake blood/scars, I was a model for Cas-Sim, which is an organisation that does casualty simulation makeup for first aid and ambulance training. It was such fun, as you had to learn how to act certain conditions. I remember "having" an angina attack which was diagnosed very quickly, as well as being a burns victim (glue and Vaseline) and "having a stroke". Such fun. Like you, I wanted to work in a shop and I did indeed work in my father's pharmacy with my parents. That was the best job I ever had. I wanted to work with computers and worked in IT. I wanted to be a nurse because my mum was a nurse but I couldn't, so I did first aid, complimentary health training, and finally ended up going full circle and working as a prescribing clerk. Funny how life goes, eh? What did you end up working as, gar?

I wanted to be an archaeologist as a little kid. Then I toyed with wanting to be a history teacher, air stewardess and graphic designer through high school before settling for law, which is still my first love. On coming to Scotland I needed to retrain to stay in law so I went into banking and, of course, had to train for that anyway. If we'd not moved I expect I would have stayed in law until I retired.
I always had itchy feet when working and chopped and changed through various private practices and the civil service. I doubt I stayed in one position for more than a few years before wanting to move on.
As a school girl I had a Saturday job on Woolworth's candy counter and that has come full circle as I have my own candy store now. I still miss law though.

Oh gosh, I can't remember them all, LOL. At one point I thought for sure I wanted to be an astronaut. I also thought I wanted to write books. And as a kid I thought for sure it would be fun to be the mom of about 20 kids. Um, I am a mom, but certainly not to 20! The only books I've created are scrapbooks, though. And I haven't been to the moon yet, which was my whole goal in becoming an astronaut. Turns out I'm okay with not meeting any of my childhood goals, though, thank goodness!

I wanted to be a teacher and most importantly, a mom. I also enjoyed the business environment.
I got a job as a part-time bank teller at 17. This started my love of numbers and what numbers can & can't do.
I did become a mom, and loved every part of this. It was unfortunate that the marriage didn't (32 years).
My BA degree was earned while working in finance with the federal government & was paid for by my work.
Life got very real, very suddenly and truly upended everything. I am now retired.

I was raised in the 70s, so my mom had drilled the “women can be anything” message into my head. When she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up… “A duck!” 🦆🤣
My reasoning? I loved to swim, and thought it would also be really cool to fly. It is still a joke in my family to this day!
Spoiler alert: I did not turn into a duck.
Once I figured out that was not a viable option, I wanted to be (at times) an elementary school teacher, a medical examiner, or a high school math teacher. I got a BS in Mathematics, but ended up working in libraries while in undergrad and really liked it. I decided to abandon the idea of a Master’s in Education and went for my Master’s in Library and Information Science.
I’ve worked in various roles in my Public Library for over 30 years and have never had the same day twice. I still love it. I am the Supervisor of Technical Services, so I’m a cataloger and also cover the Reference Desk. I’m a nerd among nerds 😆

No, I didnt become a lawyer. Besides the cost, I am one of the least confrontational people you'll ever meet.

I wanted to be a veterinarian, then an illustrator, an author, a lawyer (still think I should have done it, would have had a ton of student loans though bc there was no money for law school), and more practically, a plumber 😁 until someone pointed out all the spiders in crawl spaces I'd have to deal with. Nope.
Anyway I found myself 22, having a baby, no life plan, working two jobs to pay the bills while my bf worked at a warehouse and attended night school to become a draftsman.
When I was hospitalized during my 7th month for gestational diabetes, I had the most wonderful nurse teach me about diabetes and how to manage my insulin, etc. She seemed so "together", smart and pretty and capable. I thought, I think I can do this too. And that's how I decided to become a nurse.
No one in my family has been in healthcare so it was completely out of the blue. I'm so glad for the path my life took because it's a great career, interesting and rarely boring, and one where your intelligence is valued and you can also make a difference in someone's life.
If I hadn't been that sort of lost mom-to-be with no plan I might never have ended up where I am today. My husband eventually became an engineer and everything we have, we did ourselves. We've always been proud of that.

I went through a ton of majors my first time in college. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up and I'm still not sure same - I went to college for computer science, briefly considered French, switched to History (Russian) and completed it except for the final capstone, and thankfully had picked up a second major in Government (Soviet) which is what I actually graduated with. I wanted to be a librarian - I was the kid alphabetising my books and making library cards and library book pockets - but the closest I got was two summers worth of library internships with the DoD. The other thing I always wanted to do was to be mum of a large family - 6+ kids - that too wasn't to be but I did get to be a SAHM to three and I've loved that.

I wanted to be a veterinarian until high school. Then an English teacher. Turned out to be an elementary school teacher. Good call. My kindergarten teacher said I was bossy on my report card and it might lead to problems later on in life. No, I just needed the right career.

When I was very young, like 3 or 4 I wanted to be a math teacher. I despised math by the time I was in middle school so that was out! Then I wanted to be a graphic designer. I've had my own Etsy shop selling digital designs and I've done designing for businesses and other projects throughout the years but I chose the steady path of a government job to get health insurance and retirement instead of pursuing graphic design full time.

I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was growing up. This was pre-Indiana Jones so I'm not sure where I got the idea from. I also wanted to be an archaeologist when I was a primary school kid in the 70s. A lot of kids wanted to be archaeologists, but like you, I have no idea where the idea came from! I don't have any recollection about what I wanted to be when I was in high school. Whatever it was, I didn't get there - unless my ambition was to be a clerk at the only telco (at the time) in the country!

I spent a lot of time in the hospital as a child, so I dreamed of growing up and being a nurse.
There was no support for me to go to nursing school. So I worked as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant). And then I did a lot of caregiving for I’ll and dying family members.
I ended up as a photographer. I enjoyed it.

When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a professional wrestler and a nurse, so I could patch myself up after the fights...lol. Given that I'm a shrimp and hate blood, neither of those worked out. When I was older, I just knew I wanted to be a professional, dual-income no kid family. I didn't like kids. Every single job I've ever had has been working with or for children. I have 3 kids who I love dearly and am the CEO for a large child welfare agency. I spend my days fighting for kids and feel so fortunate to get to do it, God has quite the sense of humor.

I always thought I would be an elementary school teacher. But, when I graduated high school, there were few jobs available, so I thought I'd go to college to be an architect. My parents were very unsupportive, so I ended up going to a technical college for drafting. I eventually went to college as an adult and obtained a degree in Industrial Technology. I worked in the power and oil & gas fields for 37 years. It ended up being a great career.
I knew I needed to find a job that paid a living wage. My mom was trapped in abusive marriage to my dad, because she had 6 children and no education. I vowed to never put myself in that situation.

I wanted to be vet, but my mother told me that I wasn't good at math or science so I needed to think about being something else. Since I was a kid, I believed her. I also wanted to be a teacher, but I didn't know that until I was older and my mother didn't have that much influence over me any more. I ended up being a teacher and have been for 29 years! I am good at it, but is it my calling? I often wonder what would have happened if I had just stood up to my mother.

When I was little I wanted to be a ballerina and a school teacher (at the same time). Middle school I wanted to be a psychologist. High school an Olympic swimmer.
In college my original degree was going to be sports medicine/physical therapy, then accounting, then I changed it to liberal arts so I could teach, then back to accounting. When I finally thought I had enough college credits to graduate I found out I was 2 classes away from a double major in business and history so that's what I ended up graduating with.
My career has always revolved around accounting. I have been everything bookkeeper, office manager, controller, director of finance, CFO. For most of my adulting era it's been non-profit focused.
