The thread about what we wanted to be when we grow made me remember a book from my childhood. It was about a candy striper. It was a series, I don’t remember how many books. I searched Google but it only returns books that were not a series. Does anyone remember this book? My bf and I read them all and bf wanted to be a candy striper. I think she did volunteer one summer. Do they still have candy stripers?

I was a Candy Striper for about 4 years. It was fun. I worked in different areas each year, so I got to see a lot of the behind the scenes of the hospital. I do not recall a book series on Candy Stripers, but shoot, I didn't even how there as a single book written about being one. lol
They no longer have Candy Stripers, but the group is now called Junior Volunteers and they wear khakis and teal tops.

It sounds familiar but the nursing books I remember are Sue Barton and Cherry Ames.

I don't remember a book about Candy Stripers, just the ones about Cherry Ames and Sue Barton. I used to scour flea markets and used book stores for the ones I didn't have. lol
No Candy Stripers in any of the hospitals where I've worked over the past years.

Wasn’t Honey from the Trixie Belden books a Candy Striper? She wasn’t the main character and the series is a mystery series, but I seem to remember learning about Candy Stripers from the books.

I searched again and couldn't find it. Part of the issue I think is that I get hits only for books with the words "Candy Striper" in the title. So I am thinking those words are not in the title. It wasn't a mystery book, and being a candy striper was the main story line. Funny, I can even picture where the books were located in the public library we used to go to. Aw well, thanks everyone! It shall remain a locked memory for me.

So a Candy Striper didn't make striped candy??
I loved the Sue Barton books! I think I still have a couple in a box somewhere.

This was the first thing I thought of as well. I dont know anyone in real life who ever read those books, but I was addicted!

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a candy striper in real life or just remembering from TV.
There's a nurse at work who is constantly telling us how long she's been an ER nurse "48 years" but she's 64, so I'm strongly suspecting she's counting candy striper years. Cheater. Lol

When I was a HS senior, Catholic school, we had to do service. I was a candy striper at hospital and crazy coincidence, my crush/dude at the time, Carl, was admitted at the hospital and I delivered him beverages, mail, etc. to his room.

It looks like this one was published in 1966. I was in high school/college then so it can't be the one I was thinking of.

She wore a red and white striped apron. Generally, they brought books and magazines to the patients and maybe snacks too.

This is the closest so far. I am not certain it is the one though. I'll check the link librarylady posted too. Thanks everyone!

Lol I was a candy striper. We had a nursing home for nuns on the campus of our Catholic all-girls high school and a lot of us worked as candy stripers after school. And then my mom's cousin was in charge of volunteers at a local nursing home so I used to candy stripe during the summers for her. But whenever I see the term "candy stripe" I think of a college visit I went on with one of my daughters where an admissions counselor literally begged the kids to not only use spell check but have someone else read their essays because one kid talked about how important her years as a "candy stripper" were to her. She went on and on about "candy stripping" - because spell check didn't catch it!
