I will be mailing a gift to a 3 year old boy for his b-day, and I know he has so much stuff. So I'm trying to think of something like a few books (but again, he has many, so I need to think of something unusual) or something creative that he can do. He has a baby brother (almost one), so something that might keep him occupied when his brother requires attention might be nice. I'm trying to avoid anything terribly bulky/heavy since it's being mailed, and for the sake of the parents, something that won't take up a bunch of space in their home, either. The little boy's favorite things right now are dinosaurs. My kids are big now, so I'm out of the loop with anything that might be new and interesting for kids. Thanks for any suggestions! (Oh, as far as budget--I'm thinking $30-$35 or so, but I'm not married to that--it can come in at less or a bit more, too. )

What about a puppet that matches up with a book? I have been buying Folkmanis puppets for my grandson and they are so darn cute.

That towel is adorable! My kids and I both loved Richard Scarry as kids--always a great choice. Thanks for the ideas!

As for toys - Thomas! I suggest the wooden for his age.

I teach 3 year olds and they love these books by Herve Tullet: Press Here and Mix it Up. Press Here BookThe kids also love Kwik Sitx solid tempera paint sticks. Not nearly as messy as actual paint, but still fun to use. Paint sticksMagnatiles are also fun, but are a much more bulky gift. And possibly may already own.

For something you can easily post I would go for a tshirt, hat, towel or pyjamas that are of characters/things that they enjoy. My granddaughter is nearly 3 and she loves that sort of thing.

Wow, thanks everyone! I came back to so many great ideas! I am going to jot these down in my Christmas planner, too, so I have some when it's time to buy him a gift then as well.

I taught preschool this summer. For authors, Eric Carne, Laura Numeroff, Karma Wilson, Mo Willems are popular. If he's interested in dinosaurs, Don't let the Dinosaur stay up or Don't eat your classmates or Stomp Dinosaur Stomp would be great.
Trains or magnates would be great choices.
Maybe play doh or kinetic sand? or some kind of art activity? Dot markers? stringing beads?
A big floor puzzle?
A cooking play set? A play ice cream set with scoops?

Do they have a yard? If so I would opt for some outdoor toys. Even big plastic Dinos can be sent directly via Amazon.
I love Melissa and Doug toys for that age. A wooden Velcro food set was purchased for my son when he was 3 and he is now 22-the set is actively used in my Kindergarten classroom!
Magnatiles are a great option for building that students in my class enjoy. A “boogie board” is an LCD screen that can be written on and erased with the push of a button. Great for in the car or dining out.
You could make a little “busy kit” for restaurants. Boogie board, little Lego set, wiki sticks, play doh, crayons, coloring book, etc . Anything but an iPad! lol

I would bug a big, fuzzy, soft dinosaur blanket, the book “how do dinosaurs say goodnight?”, and a TCBunny dinosaur stuffed animal.
My nephew was huge into dinosaurs and he LOVED opening dinosaur presents! I got him a dinosaur blanket, book, and plush for his fourth birthday and he loved his gift.

That Richard Scary book was my son’s favorite book for quite a long time. He would drag it out and we would cozy up in my recliner together and he would get such a kick out of the silly cars. We had a few of his books and a stuffed lowly worm. He got such attention kick out of trying to find the worm hiding on the pages. When I could see that he had them pretty much memorized, I started painting little worm heads on different pages just to keep him hunting for them. It is a great book.

My three and a half year old grandson loves little cars and trucks, dinosaurs, mario kart, Blue's Clues, Blippi, Paw Patrol, Spidey & Friends, super heroes, etc. He also likes t-shirts with all those things on them.

Thank you so much for all of these great ideas. I'm starting to wish I had a whole gaggle of 3 year olds to shop for, now.

Mega blocks ~ really big ones and the kind that have wheels so they can build a wonky car. These are not Lego branded.
My kids, grandkids and now my friend's grandkids are playing with the same set. Clean them by putting them in a mesh bag and on the top level of the dishwasher. Most toys can be cleaned this way.
