Last year I started scrapping DS (33) childhood. My plan for his albums is to scrap based on where we lived. So album 1 is birth to age 4 in West Texas. Album 2 is age 5-10 in Georgia. Album 3 is age 10-11 in Saudi Arabia. Album 4 is age 11-14 in North Central Texas. Album 5 is age 14-18 in Nebraska.
Everyone I know scraps their kids chronologically. I've decided to choose photos I want to scrap. Then when done they go in the appropriate album. I don't file them chronologically based on when the photos were taken, but based on when I scrapped them. I like the variety of seeing different ages mixed up in one album. I find scrapping what inspires me instead of worrying about what has to be scrapped next based on age of photos makes this much more fun for me and keeps me motivated to actually complete.
Do you only scrap chronological?

While I don't scrapbook in chronological order, my albums are in chronological order.
Every so often a a ew pages may be out of order but all within the same month to two. This is because I went to 9x12 and maybe I didn't like the option to create the layout so I move it around.

I think it's fun to see layouts that document something spanning a period of time - 'look how you've grown' kind of pages with first day of school pictures for several years together. But I'm not sure I could handle making an album that wasn't at least loosely chronological. Even in making Dec Daily type projects I rebel against the idea that things can just go wherever, even with a date on them. I like things to be as close to the true chronology as possible in my albums. But it would be a whole lot easier to make an album if you just add the next page in as you make it!

My albums are in chronological order. When I print photos I put them in order using 4x6 photo pages into the album. Then I scrap what I feel like, when I feel like it and stick the page into the correct spot in the timeline. Love my 3 ring binders for this reason.

No I do not scrap chronologically. I scrap whatever takes my fancy that particular day. I do a lot of challenges, and I choose whatever photos work best for that challenge or sketch. In the last month, I have scrapped photos from the 1970s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s, and the current month.

I have scrapbooked chronologically since I started in 1996. My scrapbooks are by year....January to December. I very rarely skip ahead while actively scrapbooking. Once in a while, if no ideas are coming to me or a page isn't coming together like I envisioned....I will take a break from those photos and move on to the next set of photos....then go back to the previous photos. My way of doing it, isn't for everyone. To each, their own.

When I scrapped traditionally as opposed to pocket pages, I scrapped whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I did tend to at least have an album for each year, but I just put my LOs in as I finished them.
Now that I use pocket pages, it takes a bit more advance consideration since your next bunch of photos have to go into the back of the pocket page you just used on the last batch. So for these I do scrap chronologically, but I fudge a bit within any given month.
I want to do some heritage albums some day, and I do not plan on those being chronological. Just by family branch, with whatever photos & stories I have.

I scrap what I have photos of to scrap, and what I'm inspired by. Right now that's mostly 2022 to today. I put layouts in my albums by year, and eventually when I'm not still adding to them, I'll go back and put them in date order.

I scrap almost exclusively in chronological order and I store my pages chronologically. There are just a few exceptions (my heritage and childhood albums). This is my current way of scrapping. When I first started 20 years ago, I jumped around in the pages I made, but even then I stored the pages chronologically.

Or not. 😉 I scrap whatever sparks my interest at any given time, and I print the photos accordingly. Then, I put the LO where it goes (as chronological as possible) in the album…much, much later, when I have a huge pile. LOL

I'm another one who doesn't scrap in chronological order but stores my layouts that way. I'm ok with a little bit of flex, in my PL album I might choose to group photos by theme within a month rather than chrono, so I've done a full page about the various weather we had in a given month, or meals I've wanted to document, or everything I've been listening to. A full size layout might appear earlier or later in the month than the photos were taken based on the configuration of page protectors and the overall flow of photos.
I tend to have less flex on things like vacation albums where I usually include fewer small stories/pocket pages, so it's easier to shuffle 12x12 pages around to accommodate a double or single page spread while still keeping it chronological.

I scrapbook big events and trips chronologically, but I mostly scrap what pictures grab my attention. I have several types of albums, that I file my layouts in by the date they were created. I love your idea of scrapping by where you lived such a great way to enjoy the process and relive the memories .

Right now it's in chronological order as I'm trying to catch up on past years. Mostly because I used to scrap whatever photo caught my attention or for a story I didn't want to forget, but I was double-scrapping some photos and missing others.
I print at home so it was easier to start printing my photos in chronological order and then scrapping the same way to avoid doubles or missing.
Also, I make page kits up ahead of time after my photos are printed so it makes it easier to grab the next one in the bin when I have time to scrap.

I don't scrap chronologically at all. I'm all over the place. I'd say 50% of what I scrap are photos from the past few years but I'll also scrap a photo from 15 years ago, or 40 years ago, or whatever. Whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.
I have an insane amount of photos. I mean over 10,000. So I'm never going to scrap all of them- I just pick highlights here and there. Trying to do things in order would be so stressful and boring for me.
My albums are roughly chronological, but they are also by theme. There are separate albums for selfies, beach trips, Disney World, Christmases, Halloweens, Friends, etc. I love storing them that way because that is how I like to look at them. When I'm missing my beach vacations I just pull out the beach albums, for example, and it makes me happy.

Like others, I don’t scrap in chronological order, but my albums are. I wish I could let go of that, it would be so much easier to put layouts away! I do have Christmas albums that span years and it’s fun to see my kids’ progression through them

I do something similar to you, I don't scrapbook chronological but have various albums for my daughter that encompass certain time frames and I add layouts into those albums as I make them. I try to fit them chronologically within the album, but it doesn't always work out that way, because I'm primarily focused on flow of the album based on layout size. I have a video sharing my approach to this on youtube. youtu.be/En831o7W7Es

For me, scrapbooking is purely a creative outlet and I have no real intention of passing them on to anyone. If my family wants them, great, but it's not my goal. I have my albums separated into me or me and my husband, family, christmas, each of my kids have their own, and then misc. I scrapbook whatever I want, whenever I want, depending on if I'm in the mood to use certain papers, certain pics, or certain embellishments. There is literally no rhyme or reason to what I do. And my albums are not chronological at all.

I am currently not scrapping chronologically; however, I do put layouts in my albums chronologically. Right now I am just grabbing whatever photos I have and making layouts. While I like the flexibility of this, it isn't the most organized way of doing things and sometimes it leads to things being missed or scrapped twice.
One of my most favourite projects ever was an album I did of an Alaskan cruise. My mom and I both had photos so we got doubles of our prints, and spent a whole day sorting the photos into chronological order. I also pulled all the paper collections and supplies that I was going to use on the album and put them together. While the prep was not the most exciting thing, I love the way the album turned out and I think it was because of the pre-planning and scrapping chronologically. I used traditional layouts, ephemera and pocket pages of all different sizes. The album is really interactive and fun, and I think it is because I organized it as a whole and worked on it in order that it came together so well.
I have a similar project for a month I spent in Europe. I have not sat down and worked on it chronologically (or organized my photos as such) and it is a real mess. Eight years later, I have layouts not in albums, I don't know what photos I am missing, my printed photos are in disarray and I have not printed any of the journaling. I need to do a major organizational session for this project, and I have major regrets that I didn't do the organization up front.
I am learning that ultimately what works best for my is a hybrid approach. I can handle picking the pages and photos that appeal to me when I am scrapping everyday events, but I think for larger "projects" or themed albums I benefit from doing some up front planning and organization.

I can handle picking the pages and photos that appeal to me when I am scrapping everyday events, but I think for larger "projects" or themed albums I benefit from doing some up front planning and organization. I will say that while I scrap randomly, when I print photos, I do label them and put them in page protectors in binders chronologically and if there's ephermera or journalling notes, I pop those in the page protectors also. That helps ensure that I don't duplicate layouts and everything I want to scrap is there and ready to scrap. So yesterday I scrapped four layouts - Aug 2013, summer 2013, Aug 2023, and Oct 2023. For three of them I was working on a Shimelle class so flipping through the binders looking for a specific number, orientation, and rough colour scheme of photos that work with the specific layout prompts. Since all three used similar layout designs, I like that they won't be especially close together in albums. Once I've completed a full month's worth of photos from any specific binder - then I move those layouts to an album. This has the benefit of making it easy to spot (on my shelves) where I have unscrapped photos (they are in the binders not the albums) - I store albums and binders on the same shelves in chronological order. And yes - trip albums are planned out layout by layout in binders also complete with brochures and receipts and any journalling notes. I don't tend to sit down and scrap a whole trip all at once but I also don't tend to use a single colour scheme for the whole trip album either.

I like the idea of filing the photos into page protectors with the ephemera. I have been wanting to include more ephemera and this would be a great way to stay organized with it. right now I have envelopes of photos that I keep going through, picking up and putting down. Some are random photos I have just printed, and I can never really find what I need. I have an old post bound album that has seen better days, so I think I will start using that as a storage solution.

When I get a photo order I sort them by page ideas or event, and they go into a hanging file folder box with anything that goes with it, or sometimes I have a paper or scrap in mind I don't want to forget to use. Then when I am ready to scrap I flip through and pick one. The empty folders go in the back of the box, and when there are more empty folders than used ones, it's probably time to order new photos.

I used to scrap totally chronologically. Now I scrap mostly chronologically. I will sometimes find old pictures that I want to scrap or I'll remember a story I want to scrap and those will go into the current album I'm using. I like having an older story or picture come up as I look through my albums.
